Arctic is going to run in the Mill Reef on Saturday…..
Anything Odds Against is very good value.
Only danger is Dick Turpin but wouldn’t be worried about him.
September 14, 2009 at 22:31 #248857Arctic has only looked impressive in boggy ground and so, if the going turns out to be good, I fancy Dick Turpin to maintain his unbeaten record.

I’m a huge Dick Turpin fan and can’t argue that Arctic has been impressive in his last two outings (quite what the form amounts to is anybody’s guess), but good ground and six furlongs at Newbury should see Radiohead do the pair of them.
Dick Turpin is still my horse for the Guineas though.
September 14, 2009 at 23:08 #248866I’ve only just come across that
Shakespearean
is going for the
Goffs Million Mile
, so that now makes him,
Stunning View
(both Shamardal) and
Azmeel
(Azamour). (All three by first season sires.)
September 14, 2009 at 23:48 #248873Well dont judge Dick on his Sales run at Fairyhouse….
I will hold my hand up now and say most in that field will be 4yr old hurdlers.
Desperate race….

Hmmm….i stick my Irish head on the block and say Arctic will win

You English boys can cut me down to size if he loses…

I am comfident mind u

That was my one worry as he was very impressive on soft but he has won on good very easily albeit his first race against poor opostion. Dick Turpin seems to be happier with a bit of cut so perhaps he might be affected every bit as much if it’s fast?
He looks the part does Dick Turpin and travelled really well during the race in Ireland but they woudn’t hold a candle to Artic and Radiohead. I know he beat the Goldolphin horse who won in France but that team are cold one day and hot the next and you can never be sure of the form lines.
My feeling is Artic is a fair bit better and regard him as a bit of a good thing
Be a great race and whatever wins it will be IMO in the top 3 best 2yo in the British Isles.
September 16, 2009 at 01:42 #248984I’ve just been thinking about fillies.
I’ve read elsewhere that quite a few Guineas winners were beaten in the Cheveley Park, because at that stage they needed further.
From now on in, as far as I’m aware, there is just the 6f Cheveley Park, 1m Fillies’ Mile and 1600m Marcel Boussac at G1 level for Guineas quality fillies.
Fillies can run in the Dewhurst, but off the top of my head I can’t recall any that have done so.
Is there a case for an existing 7f 2yo Fillies’ Pattern race to be beefed up in terms of prizemoney with the intention of eventually turning it into a G1?
Alternatively, I suppose Kempton could attempt to do it on the Polytrack.
Another idea is to open up the 6f Middle Park to both sexes, and change the Cheveley Park to 7f.
September 16, 2009 at 02:56 #248991Nothing wrong with the Rockfel Stakes in its present form; probably the best recent 2yo trial for the Guineas.
September 16, 2009 at 03:24 #249000You are correct sir, 5 of the last 15 winners ran in the Rockfel on their final 2yo start. 2 from the Fillies’ Mile, 4 from the Cheveley, 1 from the Cherry Hinton, 2 from Group 3s and 1 from a, erm, maiden…
Edit – Actually a good point in the thread to update the filly situation. A couple of my shortlisted ones ran today. Foolish Ambition broke her maiden at Listowel. She had to win today to stay on the list.
Cojo however disappointed royally and finished 6th in a maiden at Yarmouth. Virginia Waters is the only 1000 Guineas winner of the past 15 runnings to have finished outside the top 3 on her debut and I tread very carefully where Aidan O’Brien is concerned. Very happy to rule her out after today.
This leaves just 12 names on my list; Conniption (big question mark over her), Foolish Ambition, Jeanie Johnston, Lady Darshaan (personally I absolutely loathe that entire formline and wouldn’t go near it if I were paid for my trouble), Lady Of The Desert, Mudaaraah, Sent From Heaven, Seta (given the likely ground and the fact she’s just slightly too late a foal, she’s not a betting prospect for me), Shamandar (seems much more like a sprinter) and the unraced Valley Aunt.
There’s a 12th which I’m keeping hush about for the time being. I think she’s a better Oaks prospect but wouldn’t surprise me if she ended up being a Guineas one too.
September 16, 2009 at 08:06 #249015Thanks guys.
As you’ve probably worked out, that race wasn’t on my radar. Has been a Group 2 since 1998. £80,000 race. Will eventually become a Group 1 if results warrant it.
September 17, 2009 at 02:25 #249152The current system’s a bit silly really, having the first 2yo fillies’ Group 1 over 1m, followed by the Cheveley Park and then the Marcel Boussac a couple of days later. Then 2 weeks before the 7f Rockfel Group 2? Nah, it’s very silly but it’s not really a big deal and it’s certainly not worth looking at in comparison to all the other crap the BHA has to deal with. They can’t even compile a geographically sensible fixture list ffs.
Anyway, Rigidity has a 2nd bite at a maiden at Yarmouth tomorrow, hope he gets beat so I can take him off the list tbh. On the sire’s side he has no chance of staying but the distaff line is packed with stamina. I mean look at Patkai’s breeding.
Captain James Cook’s lacking any maiden entries now but I’m not worried since there aren’t any maidens for him to run in at the moment. The fact that Bolger’s not said anything about him possibly having a better 2yo than Chabal’s got me wondering if I’ve not picked the wrong Bolger Galileo colt in Vita Venturi.
Unfortunately I missed the 50s on Azmeel by a few seconds on Betfair and I’ll back High Twelve at 50s in the next couple of days. I think I’ll also get a few quid on Stunning View for the Guineas before he reappears.
I’ve taken £3 at 150s about Quarrel for the 2000 Guineas. If he’s confirmed and runs in the Mill Reef he’ll be officially gone on the trends but at least if he runs well (which I fully expect him to do) I’ll be able to lay it off.

If he runs, he’s gone on the trends.Ooops, Awzaan as well actually.

Very disappointing turn out and no one could seriously expect to find the Guineas winner in this field.

Fillies can run in the Dewhurst, but off the top of my head I can’t recall any that have done so.
Clive Brittain’s Sueboog ran behind Zafonic in 1992 and went on to shaope like a non-stayer in the Oaks. She’s the last filly I can think of who ran in the Dewhurst.

I don’t suppose many top trainers would be keen to run a potential classic winner in more than one of these races anyway, so the time frame is not really a problem. Part of the fun is not having a "definitive" 2yo female champion, but a group of contenders going into their classic season.
As you say, the BHA has got plenty else to deal with.
September 18, 2009 at 13:15 #249261No my point was just that everything’s bunched together, it often makes for fairly uncompetitive races. For example, if the Marcel Boussac/Fillies’ Mile didn’t exist, it’d make the other a much stronger race.
September 20, 2009 at 14:21 #249446Does anyone know when Don’t Tell Mary and Classic Colori. Will race again.
Any news on Steinbeck and ST Nicholas Abbey. On which races they have next.
