Angus Gold:
"We have a lot of faith in Nayef as a sire – we bought one by him at this sale last year for E200,000 [a colt out of Kessna [ actually, Kassna not Kessna]], who is in training with Freddie Head and looks a class horse in the making."September 6, 2009 at 17:30 #247549So Zarkava was right, and Buzzword was more than just a marker horse to assess the other runners.

Emerald Commander "could be a Guineas horse"
Richard Hannon is favouring a tilt at the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster next month for Emerald Commander, who enhanced his growing reputation when scoring an impressive win at Haydock on Saturday.
Emerald Commander is entered in the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster this week-end, but Hannon said:"That might come too quick, and, in any event, ground conditions on Town Moor look like being much faster than that which we encountered at Haydock.
"Soft ground clearly suits Emerald Commander – he also won his maiden in the mud at Newbury – but he is no one-trick pony and was only just mugged on the line on top of the ground in the Acomb Stakes at York.
"However, you might as well try to play to his strengths, and the Racing Post is the race that I have had pencilled in for some time now. He gets the mile well and invariably come late October the ground at Doncaster rides soft, and the long straight there will suit him ideally.
"From day one, Emerald Commander has looked special. Ross Doyle bought him at the Doncaster Breeze-Up Sale for 70 grand, and he could well develop into a Guineas horse.
"We have had a lot of luck with the more precocious types, but it is great that we are also starting to get the late developers who will make up into top-class three-year-olds.
"Obviously, we will be sending a few of our two-year-olds to the Horses-in-Training Sales, but the likes of Emerald Commander, Canford Cliffs and Dick Turpin have enormous scope and were bought with next year in mind."
Quadrille, who made it two from two in the Royal colours when winning for The Queen at Kempton, is another who would come into that category – "he could be anything" said the boss – and, while the slow pace did for Monsieur Chevalier[/color:xh7iykxa] in the Sirenia Stakes – "when Star Rover came out I feared they might not go fast enough for us, and we will still think about the Prix de l’Abbaye[/color:xh7iykxa] at Longchamp on Arc day as the race could be made for him"
September 6, 2009 at 21:55 #247597Well we can throw out everything that ran in the Group 3. Dettori said Shakesperean is a much faster horse than Buzzword after he got beat LTO so I’m more than happy to throw out Emirates Dream from the Guineas reckoning, even though I already had on a personal level.

I don’t think it would be the biggest the surprise if Nideeb reversed the form on faster ground at level weights.
September 6, 2009 at 23:17 #247606Interesting to hear Hannon likes Quadrille too. I dont actiually have a note book for future winners but he is mentally noted.
I think Emerald Cmmander is improving and looks like a nice big animal, as does his conqueror at York, Elusive Pimpernel. Time will tell.
September 7, 2009 at 01:30 #247637Just noticed that Najd, who was the first part of Godolphin’s five-timer on 14th Aug, is now detailed as having died as a 2yo. His year older brother died earlier this year.
September 8, 2009 at 02:58 #247805Well a thoroughly unsatisfactory 5-day list of entries for the Champagne Stakes. Thoroughly unsatisfactory. I thought perhaps we’d find out about a highly regarded maiden winner but we’ve learnt absolutely nothing. None of the English entries are possible Guineas winners and only Await The Dawn could you really argue is a possible Ballydoyle Guineas hope. Lord High Admiral’s just a great big baby and we won’t see the best of him til a 4yo, if he’s any good that is.
The National Stakes is a bit better. although we could guess most of the entries already. Kingsfort and Stunning View are definitely the main 2 horses I’m looking forward to seeing. Just wondering if Chabal’s going to make a quick reappearance. Gile Na Greine did after her maiden, I think it was 2 weeks later than she ran in the Moyglare, and although Bolger said that Chabal probably won’t run again this year, let’s face it, you can take that with a pinch and several boxes of salt.
Oh and I’ve just remembered. Coordinated Cut, the 2yo Chapple-Hyam colt by Montjeu, has a confirmed jockey booking of Kieren Fallon for the maiden at Donny on Thursday. I think I’ll get a couple of quid on now at 100s if I can find it…
September 8, 2009 at 18:41 #247881We’re in for a few extremely exciting days all starting on Thursday. Coordinated Cut makes his debut with Fallon in the saddle while Munsarim bids to improve on his 3rd place finish behind Al Zir on his debut in the same maiden. Captain James Cook, Ferdinand Magellan and Jan Vermeer, who I believe are 3 potential Derby winners, all have a host of entries and should all be out before next Tuesday. That’s how it looks on the Derby front.
Al Zir will be running in a Conditions race rather than stepping up to the Champagne. 3 once-raced horses in the past 14 years won the Champagne after winning a maiden and it seemed like Al Zir was all set to bid to become the 4th, alas no.
Waseet’s entered in the same race, a possible Derby hope.
Poet’s Voice has been supplemented for the National Stakes which seems like an absurd waste of money. That’ll be a very interesting race if Kingsfort, Stunning View, Alfred Nobel and him all line up.
Can’t wait!!!
September 8, 2009 at 23:18 #247931Stunning View has been ruled out for Saturday and is going straight to the Goffs Millions at the Curragh a few weeks later.
September 8, 2009 at 23:31 #247934Yup, just read that snippet. Quarrel’s form was actually dealt a bit of a compliment today when Atlantis Star was beaten by about a neck into 3rd after pulling for a furlong or so. That form ties in nicely with 4th and 5th place in the Acomb and that race has already received a boost from Elusive Commander.
All in all, Quarrel looks very interesting.
On another note, I’ve been given some truly disgraceful prices for the Derby by Bet365.
Captain James Cook – 25/1
Coordinated Cut – 33/1
Ferdinand Magellan – 25/1
High Twelve – 50/1
Vita Venturi – 50/150s about High Twelve is fair enough, Vita Venturi also to an extent, but Jesus, 25s about both the Ballydoyle contenders!?!
September 8, 2009 at 23:59 #247939Oh I’ve actually just read that Coordinated Cut has been backed from 25s to 20s for the Derby already……so 33s might not be a bad price after all.
Ok I’ve had £6 at 33/1. Add that to the £2.50EW on Azmeel at 33s and I reckon I’ve got the forecast already.
Edit – another £2.90 on Azmeel at 33s (damn Stan James limiting my bet) and £2.10 on Chabal at 25s.
September 9, 2009 at 01:24 #247957Only one horse for me in the Derby.ST Nicholas Abbey. The speed he showed in the last furlong on debut was very impressive. He looks very good.
September 9, 2009 at 14:42 #247997Dont hold me to this Zarkava….but a friend of mine has just rang me saying Chabal is running in the National Stakes.
September 9, 2009 at 14:44 #247998Yeah I’ve heard several of the same rumours. Bolger really is a pillock. He’s going to ruin this horse.
Re. Tipperary maiden on Thursday night, the 3 Ballydoyle colts I was looking forward to have all been withdrawn. They all still hold an entry in the maiden at the Curragh on Saturday. O’Brien’s tended not to run his high class colts in that and it seems to be a maiden he uses for fairly mediocre animals such as Freemantle and Albert Hall.
Hot Prospect and Morana are both confirmed for the 1m maiden at Sandown on Friday night.
September 9, 2009 at 17:29 #248020Just read that Canford Cliffs is done for the season.
He’s just a bloody Three Valleys-Orpen clone. Will be surprised if he even wins a race next year.
September 9, 2009 at 20:17 #248032Derby and Oaks markets have just opened on betfair.
Termagant has somehow found her way into the Derby market, but not the Oaks.
