I knew the writing was on the wall for Blossomtime Steve when she came into the paddock with no horses in front of her and wouldn’t parade until she could walk behind another horse, exactly the way she ran her race, Adam Kirby got her out of the stalls pretty sharp and for a couple of furlongs she was going well, then she wouldn’t pass horses and seemed to prefer to stay covered up in the pack…I wouldn’t be backing her again anytime soon. In Ken’s Memory looked a picture in the paddock, a big leggy filly with a strong backend and she was well backed but ran poorly. The winner Hannon’s Bahaarah is worth following as she has progressed nicely since winning a class 5 maiden and looked as though there was more in the tank.
You’re right Dheban was a bad favourite, he was keen to post and when he came out of the stalls I think he was plane spotting for most of the race, silly boy. Tesoro looked a decent filly in the paddock but didn’t live up to her price tag and Johnston’s winner Shadow Game won his maiden at last after 5 tries.
Hannon got called into the Steward’s room after the race to explain Dheban’s bad run.
At least we have two 2yo’s not to follow any time soon, a lot of growing up to do between the pair of them. Jac

Just thought I’d add this picture of the winning filly BAHAARAH (Ifraaj) she is worth a note as she won that Class 2 Nursery Handicap quite cosily and worth going into the notebook.

    Just added this pic
    Jac :good:

Great photo Jac, thanks for that.

I would imagine she’ll be rated about 90ish now and could progress a bit yet. She might be tricky to place, not well handicapped for nursery races and slightly below listed company. I’m sort of torn between whether she will get a mile this year. Based on the latest run I would say yes but her previous start looked like seven might be her optimum.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

I agree with you about Bahaarah getting the mile by the way she coped so well with the rising ground at the finish of the race.
With more weight to carry next time out who knows, but while she’s progressing I’ll follow her with interest as I always do with my Newmarket 2yo winners…
Looking forward to seeing Shalaa run in the Gimcrack on Saturday, confident he will win it but this his s toughest task to date..great racing ahead this week who could call flat racing dull..Jac ;-)

Reports are likely he’ll run in France on Sunday instead.

Bahaarah went up to 93 in the ratings, the old fag packet wasn’t far away LOL

Steve any thoughts on JOHANNES VERMEER nice win by him but i like UNICORN more i do

I prefer Unicorn Darren, I like the way he stayed on in his maiden win and I think his first defeat when he was favourite is more forgiveable on account of the soft ground that day.

I have no firm fancy for the Derby at this stage. The Queen’s horse Recorder looks like he may make up into a contender next year but there are so many well bred ones still to appear that it looks worth waiting for now.

Talking of well bred ones and two year olds in general there is a great card with 2yo interest at The Curragh tomorrow and Coolmore finally makes her debut for the O’Brien stable. I mentioned her and Ballydoyle a long time ago on the forum and while the latter horse appeared relatively early, Coolmore has taken longer to reach the racecourse.

Coolmore is by Galileo and is a full sister to Gleneagles. Unlike him, she starts at a mile, rather than the 7f he kicked off his career at. Usually I like Guineas types to start at 6f or 7f, so kicking off at the mile makes me wonder how much of the famous O’Brien “Speed” she possesses?

Found won this maiden last year and then went on to win the Boussac and establish herself as the Guineas and Oaks favourite. It didn’t pan out for her and if I had to pick Coolmore for a Classic at this moment, it would probably be the Oaks.

Later on her stable companion Ballydoyle steps up in grade in a fascinating looking Debutante Stakes. O’Brien saddles three fillies here, so he, and we, will sort the wheat from the chaff between Ballydoyle, Alice Srings and Minding, who have all won races in promising style.

Alice Springs impressed me as much as anything on her debut and she probably ran into a top rival in the Gp 3 Silver Flash, where she went down to Tanaza, who is currently Guineas and Oaks favourite. On form I reckon she would be the one I would pick of the three, but Joseph is on Ballydoyle, suggesting that she is top choice.

Ballydoyle was 4th on her debut and while it was a promising enough start I felt she was worth being cautious about backing this season, as she seemed very much a filly who will be coming to her peak next year. She ran well when a somewhat short enough favourite at Royal Ascot and made no mistake when 4/7 in her maiden the next time. I know they like her and winners have come out of all three of her races. She needs to take another step forward here, but it is entirely possible.

Minding hasn’t got the form of the other two but she ran well behind Tanaza first time up and landed her maiden easily. I am surprised she is pitched in against two of her team mates here but she is no mug, despite looking the third string.

There are other promising fillies in there but it will be surprising if one of Aidan’s doesn’t win it. I would narrowly favour Alice Springs to Ballydoyle but a lot would depend on the odds available and bookies seem reluctant to put anything up early.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Aiden O’Brien’s Shogun is out again on Sunday and runs in the Group 2 Futurity Stakes. This represents a big step up from his maiden win but he showed marked improvement from his disappointing debut when favourite, to score cosily with the blinkers fitted to wake him up second time around.

This is no easy task and stablemate Air Vice Marshall brings Group 2 form to the table from his second to Birchwood in the Superlative Stakes.

One of Darren’s horses, Herald The Dawn, from Jim Bolger’s yard also runs and he also got off the mark in good style second time out. He is the selection of Timeform for this but the horse who was second to him, London, was beaten four lengths further behind Shogun and then went on to disappoint at 4/6f when a 40/1 shot caused a boil over.

Shogun is warm favourite at 5/4 on the very first odds through and that may seem short to some people for a maiden winner. You get the feeling they think a lot of him though and he was a good looking colt on his second start. He is the choice of Joseph O’Brien here and if he progresses as I think he will, I think he’ll win this. The blinkers are left on him after Aidan had pondered that they might remove them. I hope that they are able to race him without them eventually, as I think he is worth a go at 33/1 for the 2000 Guineas in a market where some of them won’t get a mile and several have disappointed already. I think a win of any sort will see his odds halve to 16/1 and a good win might just see him second favourite behind Air Force Blue.

    2000 Guineas Shogun 33/1 (Bet365)

Beautiful Morning granddaughter of George Washington won her maiden at York today, 4th LTO to Bint Al Reem she’s worth keeping an eye on. Amongst others she holds an entry in the Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket 25 September.
Her dam Date with Destiny was I believe the only progeny produced by George Washington during a brief spell at stud.
He was returned to racing where he broke down at Monmouth Park while competing in the Breeders Cup in the slopiest of conditions, one of the saddest days in racing…good luck Beautiful Morning what a wonderful achievement if she could win a Group race or even a Classic in his memory. Jac

In an open looking race I thought Hannon’s other runner Battle Pride was worth a silly 50p each-way at 12/1 Nathan.

Absolutely shocking on his first start he ran a lot better behind Recorder, when fourth to Haggas’ winner earlier this week. That day he was only a nose behind Ventura Storm, who made a good impression when winning next time.

There are higher rated ones in here for sure but Battle Pride looks progressive, duly winning his maiden next time, at odds which seem generous now in the hindsight of Recorder and Ventura Storm. He needs a step forward but at 12/1 he’s a fun bet for me. They Seek Him Here will have his dedicated followers today but at the odds he hasn’t really got me excited and despite having me studying all day and all of the night I can’t back him, even if it is a sunny afternoon. That said he’ll probably win and I will be in kinks.

    Battle Pride 12/1 for me.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

I thought you were going to get a winner there Nathan but First Selection kept finding more. Battle Pride started to make some late progress and looks like he needs a mile and a stiffer track.

I just had a bad feeling about They Seek Him Here at the odds today. Hugo Palmer had an excellent July but it’s more than 3 weeks since he had a winner and is 0/18 in August.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Coolmore went off at a crazy 8/15, as if defeat was out of the question but could only finish 3rd.

Punters never seem to learn. Full brother Gleneagles lost on his debut, Ballydoyle was only fourth on her debut, Highland Reel was beaten on his debut, John F Kennedy was beaten on his debut etc etc

Many of these O’Brien horses need their first run and we know that next season, and not this, is the priority. Madness backing odds on based on pedigree and reputation, there was also no excuse for not being on her last night when she was evens.

These mugs wait to see if there is money and then wire in at silly odds. Like taking sweeties from bairns for the bookies.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Looking back at Coolmore’s race a few times, she’s a filly with tons of scope. She ran near the rear for much of the race and what cost her victory today was the fact that she took ages to start making headway. I suspect the ground would have been lively enough for her today and she was closing near the finish as the 1-2-3 swept past the leader late on.

I would say she is an Oaks sort unless it came up softish in a Guineas. She’ll surely score next time, particularly if there’s a bit of cut.

Ballydoyle was confidently supported and won well with a positive ride today. She is now the favourite for the 1000 Guineas and rightly so I would say. Minding ran well in second but Alice Springs never really settled and was disappointing.

Jim Bolger’s Smash Williams made a stunning debut in a big field maiden, looking better as the race progressed and fairly scooting away in the final furlong to win by six and a half lengths. Either he is decent or twenty odd horses were rubbish. A son of Fracas, he will surely step up in grade a fair bit next time.

Yesterday at Sandown William Haggas’ son of Lope De Vega, Special Season absolutely slaughtered the opposition in a 7f maiden. In the same colours as Besharah he showed a terrific burst to dismantle his field. He finished no less than seven lengths clear and it’s been some week for the stable. He’s well worth a strong look next time to see if he progresses better than War Department, who started well but didn’t go on.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Coolmore looks a lovely horse with tons of improvement to come.
Joey was very easy on her and it was a nice introduction, definitely a Oaks sort and she reminded me of Australia on debut although at least Joey got her out the stalls.
    The price was crazy.

coolmore looks a 10F + filly to me,time by far(which could be expected with the slow pace early on) the slowest furlong per furlong of the day

Steve…Hayadh in the paddock very coltish again and spooked at the cameraman going to post which set him alight, he’s a big baby at the moment, very rangy and did catch the eye and I don’t think Frankie was too hard on him once Birchwood started his winning run.

I’d like to add Simon Crisford’s FIRST SELECTION to the 2yo list after todays win, I was pleased to get 13/2 about him.
Stood out in the paddock on looks out of Diktat by a Mozart mare.

Here’s BALLYDOYLE going to post before winning her Maiden at Newmarket this afternoon
    Galileo-Butterfly Cove (Storm Cat) :rose:

First Selection just gets better and better. :good:
Ballydoyle is a serious Guineas contender after today. :good:
I didn’t think Ch.4 presenters gave First Selection very much in the way of compliments before the off, it was all about They Seek Him Here and the difference was that They Seak Him Here had weakened inside the final furlong in his last race at Newmarket, won by Birchwood, whereas First Selection had battled strongly up the hill over the 7f uphill finish to gain the spoils from Spongy.
Today he looked better than ever.. :good:
