Any news on Galvin? I was hoping they might withdraw him before the start he was reported as being a bit shaky and stressed. Poor horses, I wont be watching.
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...April 15, 2023 at 18:27 #1643861“I had Vanillier at 33s and have to say Flanagan must of thought they were going around again.
With De Boinville I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Known as the iceman yet he totally bottled that. Suicide to kick so early.”
Watching the replay, perhaps Flanagan did ride him a bit too far back. He gave some good horses plenty of start. Not sure it was Townend’s finest hour either.
As for De Boinville, I think the horse tanked him there.
Maybe it is just me but I find it really difficult to pick them out on the run from the start down to Bechers. I was convinced Gaillard Du Mesnil had fallen and I could hardly see where Vanillier was at all, even though he is a grey!
April 15, 2023 at 18:28 #1643862Hill Sixteen’s owner goes and wins the bumper. Clearly not in the slightest bit compensation but it sums this game up.
April 15, 2023 at 18:31 #1643863No it hasn’t , but days will happen like this , the activists will no doubt try and jump on it , none obvs knowing that the Thomson yard will be a 5star hotel for horses , look at there Twitter , the horses are adored

April 15, 2023 at 18:31 #1643864Am sure you’re right Moehat, many horses were not in the right state of mind after parading so long. In such circumstances horses are more likely to be injured – which these protesters don’t understand. I did have the winner in my 5 main bets, but didn’t enjoy it much.
Value Is EverythingApril 15, 2023 at 18:38 #1643865Horses were in the right frame of mind. They were allowed to go back to the paddock if they wanted and half of them did. The other half were relaxed enough and they continued to parade.
April 15, 2023 at 18:44 #1643869I’m not only talking about what happened in the race HDLG. I’m also referring to the fact that activists successfully managed to delay the race. This will be the sole focus of the post-race media coverage.
The fact that there was a fatality and we had carnage with loose horses all over the place and colliding with each other helps emphasise the activists’ message too.
Everyone posting on this thread knows how well looked after the horses are, but I think the combined events from this afternoon have been pretty negative for the sport’s public profile.
It’s ironic that the protestors’ actions may have contributed to the horses coming to harm, but the general public won’t understand that.
April 15, 2023 at 18:47 #1643870I think we’ve watched our last 40 runner Grand National.
April 15, 2023 at 18:49 #1643871Agree with Mike. I am not convinced the protests contributed to the injuries. That cannot be proved either way but none of the horses looked like they had obviously boiled over.
A glance at the media coverage shows the “Daily Mail” going big on Dark Raven’s fatal fall in the novice hurdle, with pictures showing his fall. I shudder to think what they will make of the National.
The BBC leads on the protests delaying the race, with more than a hint of approval.
April 15, 2023 at 18:49 #1643872Mike, how can you say the horses where in the right frame of mind? We don’t know that, we don’t know when human athletes are in the right frame of mind half the time.
April 15, 2023 at 18:51 #1643873Some horses handled it , some didn’t

April 15, 2023 at 18:55 #1643877Horses aren’t all the same, Mike.
Galvin was stressed out and am sure he wasn’t the only one.
Some horses don’t like parading at all, let alone for longer than necessary. Yes, some will be fine and parade well, others may relax more when going back to the paddock. Authorities did the best they could under difficult circumstances, but for some horses it would be too late and the longer the delay goes on the worse they’ll be.Value Is EverythingApril 15, 2023 at 18:55 #1643878worzel i was presenting the case against those saying the horses weren’t. There was around a 10 to 15 minute delay i believe. It wasn’t hours. The horses were ready to race.
April 15, 2023 at 18:59 #1643882The delay and threat of further protests made the start a lot more tense than usual. Both horses and jockeys would have been affected (some more than others). Every chance that this contributed to the carnage at the first.
I believe Galvin is fine Jac
April 15, 2023 at 19:01 #1643883Horses could have been stressed out by the occasion anyway. The atmosphere at Aintree is unique and the crowd seems closer to the paddock there than they are at Cheltenham.
I am not saying for certain no horses were affected by the delay but we cannot know for certain. It is pure speculation.
April 15, 2023 at 19:07 #1643886Just watched the My Lady’s Manor (thank you NSA live stream) and gotta say I enjoyed the 4 horse race much more. The brilliant Tomgarrow setting a new race record with the two elder gents Vintage Vinnie and Mystic Strike behind him. A nice palate cleanser.
April 15, 2023 at 19:08 #1643887Exactly Ginger and CAS. I agree we don’t know for certain how many were affected but I think it was Mick Fitzgerald who picked up on Galvin prior to the race.
