December 29, 2018 at 23:12 #1390769Potato – Assuming Henderson is able to addresss Might Bite’s bleeding problems, which I understand could be a big ‘if’, I still think Might Bite is the most likely winner and have done since last year’s Gold Cup finished. I also thought he would have won last year i.e. I have been consistent in my support (I hope not blindly) for Might Bite. That said, when new information comes to light it would be foolish not to adjust one’s thoughts to accommodate the new information. Whilst loyal to Might Bite, I have less confidence in him turning up 100% than I did at the start of the season and should the vibes not be positive I will, if necessary, adjust my opinion too. I hope I don’t have too though.
My view on the other runners:
I think Presenting Percy, despite winning the RSA comfortably, won a weak RSA which had Elegant Escape 14 lengths back in third. He is clearly a good horse but there is a big difference between winning a Pertemps or RSA and winning the Gold Cup. I’m slightly baffled why they keep delaying his debut based on the ‘ground’ given his previous strong performances on good ground. He needs to improve – which he well might given his age.
I would be very surprised if Kemboy was good enough. Still got lots to prove I’m my book. I wish all the Supreme Horse Racing club good luck but I’m not convinced he’s raced against the best yet and won. Seems to be improving though.
Native River – a good chance if the ground goes his way and hence needs a soft ground Gold Cup to have a chance in order to bring his stamina into play.
Politologue – If he can’t stay 3m at Kempton I don’t see how he will stay 3m 2f at Cheltenham with the uphill finish.
Clan Des Obeaux – Very impressed with his performance and a massive improver. Should Might Bite not recover this is where my money will be going.
Bristol De Mai – He seems to fragile, needs soft ground and seems to be leave his best performances behind at Haydock.
Good luck with your Elegant Escape bet but I think he’s the type of horse better aimed at a Grand National.
December 29, 2018 at 23:20 #1390770Not me potato. Presenting Percy is the only horse I have backed for this, in March 2018.
December 29, 2018 at 23:23 #1390771Kemboy will get rid of the rider in the gold cup, or make a bad mistake somewhere that will end it for him.
Even the jockey said he takes some chances at the obstacles.
Don’t wish it on the horse, just a gut feeling.December 30, 2018 at 14:48 #1390807At the moment for me Native River looks the most likely winner. He’s run well at tracks which don’t play to his strengths and every other horse has big questions to answer about whether they could handle the trials of a Gold Cup – he doesn’t.
There’s still plenty to see before March though so I think it’s probably best to make up your mind come the day.
December 30, 2018 at 17:58 #1390841It’s a childish argument, Potato ; the conflation of dozens of different opinions over several months and mocking them like they were one voice.
Then there’s the salient point that it’s horse racing, we’re humans and opinions change.
December 30, 2018 at 18:31 #1390845I would be very surprised if Kemboy was good enough. Still got lots to prove I’m my book. I wish all the Supreme Horse Racing club good luck but I’m not convinced he’s raced against the best yet and won. Seems to be improving though.
Whilst he’s probably not a typical GC type in that he can be keen etc. I’m surprised you think he’s not good enough. He’s had 8 chase starts and only 13 starts in total and he’s just went and won an open G1 by 7.5Ls keen! Road to Respect should’ve finished closer, but was Kemboy all out? I doubt that myself.
Kemboy for me isn’t a bet for the GC, but some engine. I’d actually prefer him over shorter this year.
Road to Respect for me finishes much closer on better ground at Cheltenham than he did last year.
Given Might Bite’s age and general character, this would take a monumental effort from Hendo. Right up there with Sprinter!

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!December 30, 2018 at 19:18 #1390856I’m in the Tizzard camp at the minute for this one but I haven’t had an antepost bet yet. Native probably my first choice and then thistlecrack. Native got obvious reasons given he’s been there and done it and ran very credibly this season in races that wouldn’t entirely suit him. Thistlecrack because I think he’s just gradually coming to himself this season and back to his best and I think he will improve again on a great run in the King George. All in all this is still not a race I would have much of an antepost play on due to the arguements for a lot of these horses
December 30, 2018 at 19:18 #1390857Mark as much as it’s a childish arguement it has served its purpose and caused people to offer opinions on the gold cup and reinvigorate the thread.
December 31, 2018 at 10:31 #1390893David Mullins, jockey The Savills Chase wasn’t a race you could take anything out of. It was run at the pace of a beginners’ chase rather than a Grade 1, but in fairness Kemboy hit the line well. He has more gears than your normal three-miler but I’d be cautious about the form. Harry Cobden gave Clan Des Obeaux a great ride in the King George and he could be a Gold Cup horse.

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!December 31, 2018 at 12:46 #1390899Nicholls claimed before the king george that Clan Des Obeaux was a better horse going right handed.
Looks more of a flat track horse to me and if Nicholls comments are true (I dont see that evidence personally) then he stands little chance in the gold cup.December 31, 2018 at 13:15 #1390903Potato I strongly agree with you about CDO being several lbs better going right handed and possibly about the flat track as well. I really like him but will not back him in the GC for these reasons.
Also agree about the slow pace of the Savills and it suiting Kemboy and the clever ride he got ie you cannot expect stayers to catch up with a front runner with 2.5m winning speed at the end of what was essentially a 2m chase or not even that.
The one from the Savills I like is Bellshill. Race totally not run to suit, first time out and he will come on for it. I don’t think he’s as right handed as CDO and he came third in Might Bite’s RSA. Granted he was well adrift but he wasn’t as precocious as MB and Whisper was street smart and a bit older. I’m going to go ahead and take the 20s each way.

Jack – Let me clarify my comment. I don’t think he’s good enough to win this year’s running of the Gold Cup. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t think he’ll develop into a future GC horse. In fact, if he keeps showing the improvement he’s showing I would very much expect him to be a leading contender for the next few years.
