This race is a near an impossible task to figure out but two of my current favorites, Waiting Patiently and Politologue go in this, so I have backed both of them accordingly!
December 26, 2018 at 13:01 #1390261Prices for this race make absolutely no sense
WP is unproven at the trip, having his 1st run of the season and his Ascot defeat of a past his prime Cue Card still leaves him something to find on the book.
Might Bite has a big question to answer after the alarming way he checked out at Haydock and even a repeat of last year’s performance is unlikely to see him join the list of dual winners.
Politologue is unproven at the trip and whilst his defeat of Charbel (giving weight) was a good performance it still leaves him a lot to find as what price would Charbel be if running in this race (easily double figures I bet).
Nativer River at 6s (I got on at 7s) is frankly insulting and I still don’t get the thought that many believe the track is too quick for him (he has won at Aintree which is a sharper track than Kempton) don’t forget all the experts tell you that you have to stay very well at Kempton especially in a KG where the pace is unrelenting.
With the pace angle here (Coneygree in particular), this race is likely to be set up for those that have stamina in reserve and that points majorly in favour of NR (I would hope Johnson will sit a length or so off the leader early on) and yes I fully expect him to be one of the first of the fancied horses to be niggled at (nothing new if you look back at all his races regardless of the track) but if he is with them turning for home I would expect him to out stay them.
December 26, 2018 at 15:14 #1390284Classy winner and only 6 yrs old – TC ran a blinder and NR stuck on considering he never travel a yard. Might Bite cut out again very quickly and you have to think he has a problem of some sort.
Sets it up for Cheltenham now – will the extra 2F suit the winner or will it swing back in NR favour.
December 26, 2018 at 15:20 #1390285Just relieved that Bristol de Mai is ok; didn’t look good….
December 26, 2018 at 15:26 #1390287Well done to all who backed Clan Des Obeaux brilliant win:good:
Best late Christmas present of all to see Bristol De Mai, up after that dreadful fall, galloping back with Waiting Patiently looking none the worse for the experience.

What a day of surprises across the cards, Getabird and Buveur D’air beaten and Might Bite seems to have fallen out of love with the game..
JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...December 26, 2018 at 15:34 #1390290Bit unsatisfactory that as wanted to see what BDM and WP were capable of there, glad they are ok.
May be the Gold Cup will go to Ireland this season, time will tell.
Back to the drawing board with Might Bite, not finishing his races for some reason.
WD winners and placers.
December 26, 2018 at 15:46 #1390292Well done all Clan backers. Couldn’t have had him but is obviously improving at a huge rate of knots and it would be a major error to believe that was a fluke today. I took some 16s for the Gold Cup which has gone, but 12s still available at the time of writing with Betvictor. Crazy price given that the race is blown open, Might Bite bubble is burst, Native River will struggle to turn that form around no matter the stamina test, as will Thistlecrack. Clan Des Obeaux should be second favourite. He’s only 6 and if he improves from this as much as he’s improved from Haydock, the Gold Cup will be his barring accidents.
December 26, 2018 at 15:54 #1390296Yes as Mick Fitz said one of the best sights to see was BdM and WP up and cantering loose with their ears pricked. Poor Brian Hughes and Ruth J.
I’m at my non racing in laws for Christmas- they kindly let me commandeer the telly for the afternoon. I was fairly hopping as Clan des Obeaux was coming over the last couple. He had a lovely educational round at Haydock and was able to work into it nicely today and seemed to enjoy himself. He has improved my rubbish antepost record…mostly when I back AP they don’t even turn up!
I was wrong about Thistlecrack, didn’t think he would go so well. He looked better in the paddock than he did at Haydock. Agree Might Bite must have something wrong with him, mentally or physically.
December 26, 2018 at 15:55 #1390298I seem to remember Alex Ferguson turning up at the races one day to se one of his horses run, and the horse was bitterly disappointing; pretty sure it was Clan des Obeaux. Really stuck in my mind.
December 26, 2018 at 15:57 #1390299Think he had a wind op and some time off moe. Should stay gold cup trip but better right handed; it may be that today was his big day.
December 26, 2018 at 16:04 #1390302Native river finished like a train, just couldn’t handle the early pace
December 26, 2018 at 16:09 #1390303I thought that Waiting Patiently was very unlucky, brought down by Bristol De Mai whose jumping let him down. By the reaction of WP jockey he must have thought he would have had a major chance. But it was a long way out.
Thistlecrack ran superbly but breathing down his neck was Clan Des Obeaux who looked and indeed was going miles better.
Well done all who was on Clan. Probably could follow up at Cheltenham

You've got to accentuate the positive.
Eliminate the negative.
Latch on to the affirmative.
Don't mess with mister in between.December 26, 2018 at 16:40 #1390310Well done Greenasgrass and anyone I have missed that backed the winner

Interesting race really. A few bubbles burst and Might Bite might have had his heart broken by Native River at Cheltenham but who knows long term.
Mrsraymo backed Native River each way and I am thinking of sending Dicky a thank you because he deserves it for getting placed

Cheltenham is looking interesting
December 26, 2018 at 17:40 #1390320Nice performance from the winner
wonderful to see Thistlecrack making a decent run of things.Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
December 26, 2018 at 19:19 #1390337A race that rather fell apart, but winner is probably improving; as a great admirer of Paul Nichols, kicking myself fro not backing it
December 26, 2018 at 23:12 #1390343Well, I was on Bristol de Mai and Waiting Patiently, not my lucky race. Did not expect Thistlecrack and Clan des Obeaux to fight it out in the end. The British staying division looks wide open.
December 27, 2018 at 00:01 #1390348There are probably 7 staying chasers in the Uk who can perform 170-175 on any given day. Native River, Might Bite, Thistlecrack, Bristol de Mai, Clan Des Obeaux, Waiting Patiently, definitely red. None of them at the moment are good enough to dominate, or win by big margins, it’s just a very competitive division.
In terms of Irish horses, they are more unknown as they don’t take each other on as often. Road to Respect, Presenting Percy, Bellshill, Sizing John are the 4 best of the Irish it seems but whether any of them can perform to that 175 level is still very questionable. Sizing John has issues while the others haven’t reached it yet.
It’s really very competitive, but this division has lacked a 180+ horse since the days of Kauto, Denman and Long Run. - AuthorPosts
