Does anyone think Ruby may be right and Bamako Moriviere will end up in this rather than the novice chase route?
Should be three from three this season but for coming down at the last on his first start when 40 lengths clear and won a grade 3 on Sunday.
Ruby said that he’d love to ride Djajadam, Yorkhill or Bamako Moriviere to glory in the gold cup which I thought was interesting. Why mention the latter when surely he’s destined for the RSA or JLT? Perhaps Mullins has thrown the idea out there for him to be a gold cup contender as they have little else this year that could win a gold cup.
Interesting..
November 7, 2017 at 17:27 #1325650Ricci wants to win the gold cup more than any other race but I’d imagine Willie would talk him out of it and go the traditional novice route.
November 7, 2017 at 17:35 #1325653Might Bite declared for Sandown on Sunday. Possibly giving the Betfair chase a miss in case it gets too testing I’m wondering.
Looking forward to seeing this horse in action this year more than any other. Quirks a plenty but some sight in full flow. Was mauling that RSA field Denman style before his antics up the run in.
November 7, 2017 at 18:18 #132566010s Might Bite suggests he will not be at Haydock. He’d need to hack up at the weekend and get goodish ground up North – unlikely.

He might say he does but obviously does not or he wouldn’t have let Ruby spoof him out of the Vautour run.
November 7, 2017 at 18:23 #1325662I was picking up on Ricci’s quote in Melbourne yesterday but yeah the carry on with Vautour immediately sprung to mind.
November 7, 2017 at 18:34 #1325667Nicky Henderson said in his latest Unibet blog that Might Bite will almost certainly swerve the Betfair Chase.

I’m 99% at the time that quote came out it was a mistake/typo. The horse Ruby was talking about was Acapella bourgeois who has transferred to the yard
November 7, 2017 at 20:22 #1325704Acapella certainly went very blue today.

Always got to take the rough with the smooth but Henderson ought to have been more thoughtful when JCR approached him for a supportive quote for the Jockey Club Million. He was bullish about going for it with Might Bite which made him a very attractive bet for me at 50/1. Less than a week after it he was backtracking on the Betfair. That change of mind couldn’t have happened naturally in a few days so early in the season; it was obviously far from a priority with him.

Disappointing he didn’t mention Douvan

Ahhh. That would make sense. Cheers
November 9, 2017 at 19:53 #1325984I’m going to throw my second dart at this year’s Gold Cup in the form of Coney Island at 33/1.
I think Eddie Harty has a seriously good horse on his hands with this one, and he’s coming into this season as a forgotten contender. His form is tied in with the very best Irish novice chasers from last season, winning the Drinmore in impressive style, before running a close second to last season’s star novice Our Duke in the Fort Leney. Himself, Our Duke and Disko pulled well clear of some useful chasers that day, and the form of that race has worked out exceptionally well. I think it would be very unfair to use Our Duke’s most recent run to crab the form, as it was simply too bad to be true.
Coney is a brilliant jumper with a high cruising speed, and he looks a dour stayer. He ticks all the boxes for me, bar having previous Cheltenham form. Harty only has the one Cheltenham success to his name with Captain Ceebee, but many over here get the impression he’s a trainer who has the potential to go right to the top with the right ammunition. It’s fair to say he hasn’t progressed on that ambition in the years since Captain Ceebee, but you never know, maybe this horse – who like Captain Ceebee sports the famous green and gold hoops and sheepskin noseband – will have him dining at racing’s top table very soon.
He has no entries in Ireland as of now, but I see he is entered in the King George, maybe that alone should tell you what the trainer thinks of the horse. The fact that Un De Sceaux is shorter in the betting for the Gold Cup just shows how much big trainer bias effects the market. No doubt the Gold Cup market will start to cut up considerably when some big names fall by the wayside, in my opinion it is far too early to tell, but perhaps we have seen the first of them in Our Duke.
November 9, 2017 at 23:15 #1326018Personally, I feel Coney Island has to improve from beating Our Duke and Disko as that really isn’t gold cup form.
Whilst it would’ve been nice to have seen our duke win last week by 10 lengths and seem a star, he didn’t.
The Irish Grand National is nowhere beat gold cup form.
I can’t see of the above three placing in a gold cup but of course I wish you luck with your bet.
November 10, 2017 at 00:17 #1326030You’re right MoM, that isn’t quite Gold Cup winning form, but then again, who does have Gold Cup winning form as a novice? Absolutely nobody. The point is, I expect Coney Island to not only have improved over the past spring and summer, but also to improve as this season progresses with a view to peaking in March.
Yes the Irish Grand National in itself isn’t Gold Cup form (although it was the strongest Irish Grand National field in recent memory), but it was the fact that Our Duke won it by 14 lengths that suggests he was out of the ordinary.

I’m sure many people said the exact same thing around this time last year, when Don Cossack, Vautour and Thistlecrack topped the market. But look what happened there, sadly not one of them even made it to the race. If I told you back then that Sizing John would be the Gold Cup winner what would you have said? Never underestimate a horse’s ability to improve.

I’m just saying, the fact that form isn’t going to be good enough at the moment is why he will be 33s.
He produces a run like that in a race like the king George and of course he will be far shorter for the gold cup.
It’s a game of opinions
November 10, 2017 at 14:18 #1326078the fact that most horses who have ran in it tend to not come back and win it or get near it for that matter make it a difficult race to say that “this form is good enough this form isnt”
The winner similar to last year may very well be running over a different distance or may well be out of the top ten in the betting
Is our duke a contender ? Definitely
Is coney island a contender? Not any less a contender than sizing john was last year at this point
You would have to say that running in a previous gold cup is more a negative than a positive
