Fantastic performance by Native River and Might bite. Brilliant.
March 16, 2018 at 15:40 #1347077One of the best races i have seen in years. I was on MB but that was the ride of a lifetime and a horse that is wonderful
They destroyed that field
March 16, 2018 at 15:42 #1347078Well done Tizzards, well done to horse and rider!
March 16, 2018 at 15:42 #1347079Yeeeee haaaaa! Lost my voice! What a ride by Dickie! Great horse, such a trier!
March 16, 2018 at 15:46 #1347080Native River 22/1 and Our Duke 11/2. Native River was my first ante post bet of this season and still happy with that price. This really should be his year. Right age and experience and also gets his ground. I suspect Richard Johnson saw Sam Spinner today and will make sure that it won’t become a sprint. Had to add Our Duke after Presenting Percy destroyed the field in the RSA Chase. Might Bite has too many questions to answer to be favourite in my opinion.
Native River 22/1
Our Duke 11/2My first ante post bet of the season and my best

What a fantastic ride by Richard Johnson. Once Nico de Boinville couldn’t get past him on the bridle I knew Native River got it. A bit like Coneygree a few years ago, what a destruction of a top class event.
March 16, 2018 at 15:53 #1347081Great ride, great training, great horse. Really happy for them; the jockey is one of the nice guys in the game, the trainers deserve a bit of luck and the horse is just so gallant!
Hopefully we see Might Bite back next year on good ground.
March 16, 2018 at 15:54 #1347082Great race! Full marks to the Tizzard’s for their schedule for NR this year. Fully deserved win.
I didn’t bet on the race, rather just wanting to watch and appreciate. I do however feel slightly disappointed by the ground, being that Might Bite is the best horse, talent wise, but was bogged down by the ground.
The 7/1 available for next year’s gold cup is a great price IMO. Most certainly going in my Mug multiples for next year!
Just can’t stop thinking how impressive he’d have been on better ground!
March 16, 2018 at 15:54 #1347083Well done all Native River backers. He and MB jumped beautifully, better than anything else in the field. And well done Tizzard for giving him the perfect prep. What a genuine honest horse.
March 16, 2018 at 16:00 #1347086Well done all Native River backers. Happy enough with my each way on Anibale Fly (purely on the basis that I thought he would have beaten Edwulf if he hadn’t fallen last time but was a far bigger price). Other bet (Bachasson) not so good. Hope he’s unscathed.
March 16, 2018 at 16:12 #1347090Great horse, great ride, great rider, great trainer, great race.
March 16, 2018 at 16:32 #1347092Chuffed for the Tizzards, magnificent horse! Well done all backers!
March 16, 2018 at 16:48 #1347095Fine analysis, Mark; well done and the same to all Native River backers. I got that one badly wrong.
Wonderful, wonderful race. How unusual was that, a Gold Cup that was a two-runner race from flagfall?
March 16, 2018 at 16:56 #1347098Might Bite was simply outstayed. He was lobbing all over Native River for most of the way.
Native River is a straight-forward ride and he deserves all the plaudits here, the jockey got most of the field in trouble but ultimately it was the horse’s stamina reserves that won the day.
The jockey on the runner up was no less talented and rode the perfect stalking race, he simply had a tired horse under him late on.
As I had said, Nicky’s Secret Plan was likely to be to track Native River and strike as late as possible and for much of the way it went perfectly to plan. If anything Nico went earlier than I had expected he would but it made no difference because Might Bite just ran out of gas, as plenty of people felt he might do on the ground.
Brough Scott reckoned it was the best race he has ever watched but for me it was crystal clear that Might Bite was tired and Native River was in command with no danger of his rival coming again.
I backed both of them and while it was more financially rewarding if Might Bite won, I have always loved Native River and I really felt he would have run the field ragged in the Grand National this season.
I was against Our Duke all season for this race and I just didn’t think it would suit him. His win from Presenting Percy seemed to start money flowing on him but he was never really going today at all.
As my old mate used to say, somewhat illogically:-
“Half a kipper is better than no bread”
Well done everyone on at good odds, the taste is always sweeter at bigger odds.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
March 16, 2018 at 16:58 #1347099Might Bite was Coneygreed.
Value Is EverythingMarch 16, 2018 at 17:59 #1347116Crikey, today was a bloodbath in the mud bath for me !! But still some worthy winners in Native River, Pacha de P & Farclas. Phew, I’m actually glad it’s over for another year ……. only kidding, roll on Aintree !!
March 16, 2018 at 18:22 #1347122Did Johnson having that fresh strip of ground on the inside make the difference? Certainly might have I think, but no denying Native River’s tenacity.
Hopefully we see Might Bite at Aintree or Punchestown, although that race may have taken a lot out of him, despite it being only his third run of the season.
March 16, 2018 at 18:24 #1347123Wexford summed it up perfectly
I believe that’s the best gc I’ve seen.
