What a fantastic animal Might Bite is, to back up from that run at Cheltenham and smash them up at Aintree. Class.
April 12, 2018 at 15:10 #1349941Surely time for The Racing Post to retreat further from their rating of 185 for Bristol De Mai in the Betfair? They knocked 2 off it already and it was odd to see Bristol De Mai going in with the highest RPR of the field today with 183 to Might Bite on 181.
Might Bite made a bad mistake and still ran out a cosy winner after giving his all in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham. Bristol De Mai ran a game race but he’s one dimensional and just a bit below the best. That should have been reflected in his rating for the Betfair.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
April 12, 2018 at 15:12 #1349944That was great from Might Bite and put to bed my fears of temperament. Didn’t appear to idle at all. Both he and Bristol De Mai running somewhere near their bests. Clan Des Obeaux got me the place money, would’ve been a little closer had he not been hampered twice by the loose horse, but made no difference to positions. He could be Nicholls’ best horse next year.
Value Is EverythingApril 12, 2018 at 15:14 #1349946Even allowing for the extra week between Cheltenham and now, it is a great training performance after the hard race he had – think that race did have an effect on todays run as I don’t think he was at his best today but his class got him through.
Have to say that BetFred now making him favourite for next year’s Gold Cup is a bit of a head scratcher – even on better ground I struggle to see how he could reverse placings with Nativer River given his run style.
April 12, 2018 at 15:17 #1349947Do we think that Clan Des Obeaux could give Nicholls a bit of a headache next year? He’d probably be kept away from lugging heavy weights around in handicaps but I think he’ll struggle to win a Betfair/King George/Gold Cup. Maybe he could be given a similar campaign to Top Notch’s this year but I think he sees out 3 miles well enough. Hard one for connections but if he was mine and Harry Cobden said today’s trip was no issue at all then I’d put him away for the Hennessy.

Spot on, Steve.
Timeform’s performance ratings for BDM’s Betfair, Charlie Hall and Peter Marsh are exactly the same.Value Is EverythingApril 12, 2018 at 15:22 #1349949Might Bite was cantering all over Native River until his stamina ran out in the Gold Cup. On better ground he’d have a much better chance of tracking Native River again, but then having enough left to go past him.
The more assured stayer won the Gold Cup. Don’t we think Might Bite would beat Native River in a King George?
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
April 12, 2018 at 15:27 #1349951Native River isn’t running in the King George
April 12, 2018 at 15:53 #1349957I am not sure Might Bite would have won the KG had Nativer River ran in it as the race (up until when BDM checked out) was similarly run to the Gold Cup i.e two horses pushing the pace from the start – probably a mute point anyway as unlikely NR would go that route.
A Gold Cup on better ground would be run at a faster pace from the start and with MB’s run style (likes to be on the pace) it will still come down to stamina and I don’t think (for him) the tactic of eye balling a stronger stayer in NR the whole way will ever work out for him.
Personally I think for a GC they would be better having MB sit off the pace and try to avoid getting into a protracted battle with NR and instead try and pounce on him going to the last – Sizing John’s GC win shows NR isn’t able to match a rival with a turn of foot.
April 12, 2018 at 15:55 #1349958Time for me, at least, to lower the flag and accept defeat on Bristol De Mai’s talent level.
One thing from today – Henderson will probably race Might Bite more next season. He was ultra careful this year but it could be that all the horse wanted was experience. As Mark said, no sign of temperament in last two runs. He’s a bonny horse in all kinds of ways.

Never said he was, it’s a hypothetical question. ie If he ran.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
April 12, 2018 at 16:05 #1349963I believe Might Bite would win a renewal on better ground. There is only so fast a horse like Native River can go. As a Welsh National winner you would be doubtful he would be able to draw the sting out of a finisher the way it can be done in testing conditions.

All the best judges admit/can see when they’re wrong, Joe.
Am I a good judge?
Value Is EverythingApril 12, 2018 at 16:31 #1349973I do think the temperament card has been seriously overplayed with this horse – nothing he has done this season has even remotely hinted that there is an issue – he had two incidents of jinking last season, which could easily be attributed to either a loss of concentration and/or being inexperienced.
Well past time to put this now non issue to bed for good.

The way I look at it is, Native River is unbeatable on soft ground and Might Bite is unbeatable on good ground. On good ground, I have no doubt whatsoever that MB would have slaughtered Native River.

Thought you did carpets
Might Bite would have won the Gold Cup on better going for sure
Henderson is some trainer mind, at the end of the Gold Cup Might Bite looked legless at one point I thought he was going to sink into the ground.Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
