As long as he and all the others come home safely I’ll be happy. ‘ yes Jac; I’m kind of looking forward to it and dreading it at the same time #nothingnewtherethen!
January 6, 2018 at 01:36 #1335833Final Nudge for me took the 6 places with skybet @ 12’s in the end tonight.
Was really the only horse not being pushed along when fell 4 out at the midlands national travelling extremely before an uncharacteristic jumping error. 2nd on official ‘soft’ ground although look heavy side of soft behind Present Man in the Badger Ales first run this season, in my opinion that is the pick of the form of this field.
Handles heavy stays the trip should be single digits imo!

January 6, 2018 at 01:39 #1335834Welcome to TRF James
January 6, 2018 at 03:12 #1335844I’ll stick with my original horse before the abandonment in chase the Spud
January 6, 2018 at 09:29 #1335862This is a race where it is easy to lose money by backing the big priced runners who really we know aren’t good enough but think with these conditions anything can happen. I’ve decided to keep it simple and just back the two horses that have the best form and handle the mud. They are Chase The Spud (9/1) and Vintage Clouds (11/1). I’ve backed them both e/w with Sky who are paying out on 6 places. I usually hunt around for ages in this race before coming up with 4 outsiders. I hope the change of plan doesn’t bite me.
January 6, 2018 at 11:54 #1335914I agree with Ginger about the WGN being a stronger test of stamina than Aintree Nationals run on better ground. In the prevailing conditions the advantage of a light weight could be exaggerated but on the other hand the WGN is one of the classier staying chases of the season. However, Bobby may be correct that this isn’t the strongest renewal. If so then the performance of Raz De Maree against Native River last season could be good enough if repeated off a similar mark and we know the horse will be one of the few who will handle the unique test, seems great E/W value at 18/1. I also agree with Joe re Silsol who has shown great battling qualities in the past, Paul Nichols and Bryony Frost, worth chucking in E/W at 33/1. So those are my two against the field.
January 6, 2018 at 11:55 #1335915O’faolains boy has had a wind op. For the sake of avoiding egg I think a touch at 33/1 is called for.
January 6, 2018 at 11:57 #1335916Not sure you could say this is more of a stamina test than the Grand National though. Considering they go like the clappers at Aintree.
January 6, 2018 at 12:19 #1335924Went ahead with Firebird Flyer at 40s EW for the 5 places to add to my On the Road bet and also convinced by the Silsol arguments on this thread- if Bryony’s knack for getting them to jump works 33s looks a good EW price for a horse that’s beaten Minella Rocco, One for Arthur and Seeyouatmidnight over fences in the past. So had a bit on him too.
Good luck all
January 6, 2018 at 12:43 #1335931I’ve had an ew double with Spud and Perfect Candidate; quite exciting for me as I’ve only just worked out how to do it; staked all of 12pence!
January 6, 2018 at 12:51 #1335934the lee family love this race bishops road and alfie spinner for me

Jockeys go the pace they can get away with, Charles. If going “like the clappers at Aintree” (too fast) then the prominent runners would be swallowed up by hold up horses. Fastest way from A to B is an even pace. If they could go faster at Chepstow they would. Fact heavy ground Welsh Nationals are run at a slower speed than a normal goodish ground Aintree National proves they need to go slower at Chepstow, because it is a greater test of stamina in these conditions… And the fact they’re on about dolling off two or three fences mean it’s even worse today than usual Chepstow “heavy”. Usually out and out stayers do better at Chepstow than Aintree (Of course soft ground at Aintree would be a different proposition).

Totally agree, well worth a punt.
Value Is EverythingJanuary 6, 2018 at 13:19 #1335940Over the years this has possibly been my most profitable race of the year, can’t wait.
Value Is EverythingJanuary 6, 2018 at 13:20 #1335941Just because they ‘go like the clappers’ doesn’t necessarily mean runners will get swallowed up. Many Clouds was always to the fore as have many National winners been. And considering the ground at Aintree is no longer alowed to be any better than good-soft I don’t believe that a race a mile shorter is a greater stamina test simply due to the ground. As gruelling as it may be.
January 6, 2018 at 13:58 #1335944Grabbed the 11s on MYSTEREE, hopefully this looks like his kind of race.
