I backed Vintage Clouds for the postponed race, but haven’t this time around. He’s now favourite. Ditto Beware The Bear. Ominous?
Value Is EverythingJanuary 6, 2018 at 14:22 #1335951great run alfie but worthy winner
January 6, 2018 at 14:27 #1335952Well done to those who backed the winner. Some ride by the young lad…again. Also, good to see a veteran winning a big race.
Third and fourth for me. Vintage Clouds badly hampered, dropped back to almost last before staying on again. There’s a big staying handicap in him. Final Nudge didn’t find much after racing too keenly.
Good race though !
January 6, 2018 at 14:37 #1335958Well done winners, was about the only time in his last 10 runs i havent backed him!
The curtis horse was woeful,again.
January 6, 2018 at 14:46 #13359601 winner in about 50 runners over jumps. Something clearly not right.
January 6, 2018 at 14:46 #1335961Gutted about Wild West Wind. He was loving it and I expected him to be bang there at the end.
Got the 3rd Final Nudge so not too bad. well done winners and placers.January 6, 2018 at 14:50 #1335965Well done Razz backers, were there any on TRF?
In truth it doesn’t look a great Welsh National, with things going wrong with so many fancied horses.
Value Is EverythingJanuary 6, 2018 at 15:45 #1335973They didn’t “go like the clappers” in Many Clouds year, Charles; they went a good strong pace not an overly strong pace.
Clerk at Aintree takes an exam every year in how to prepare good-soft conditions. But who is it that marks that exam? The Aintree Clerk! You couldn’t make it up. They are still allowed to run the Grand National on Good ground, they just don’t call it “Good” – Many Clouds a good example.
Many Clouds did the 4m3f110yrds (35.5 furlongs) in 8 mins 56.4 seconds (536.4 seconds).
536.4 ‘/, 35.5 = 15.11. Many Clouds ran the Grand National at an average speed of 15.11 seconds per furlong on the (at least officially) good-soft ground. Most would say today’s Welsh Grand National was run at just as strong a pace.
Raz De Maree did the 3m5f110yrds (29.5f) in 8 mins 12.1 seconds (492.1 seconds).
492.1 ‘/, 29.5 = 16.68. Raz De Maree ran the Welsh Grand National at an average speed of 16.68 seconds per furlong on heavy ground. Many Clouds running a faster average speed than Raz De Maree. That would not be possible if Many Clouds Grand National was a greater test of stamina.
Value Is EverythingJanuary 6, 2018 at 16:42 #1335985Didn’t have a penny on him but a well deserved victory for Raz De Maree after he was denied last season only by the handicappers favourable treatment of Native River.
January 6, 2018 at 16:43 #1335986Any Raz backers? Well done if so. I think Chris Cook tipped him in The Guardian.
January 6, 2018 at 17:41 #1335993Yes, thank you, I went for Raz, and Silsol who rewarded those taking the offer of five places.
Two big price winners in a week, perhaps I’m getting the hang of going by feel not form!
January 6, 2018 at 18:06 #1336003I had one whole pound e/w on Razzle (just wanted to watch the race live on my phone while on the train) – a deserved win for a mighty old horse but quite a big assist from the other riders I’d say.
Starting the race on the turn led to a big early scramble for position, which seemed to be sustained through the first mile at least. Young Bowen (whether by his own judgement or the horse’s terminal lack of pace) wisely steered clear and popped away out the back. They went far too fast in the conditions and strong-stayer Raz was ideally-placed to pick up the pieces.
All that said, Raz deserves an in-running upgrade. He ran right up the backside of one at the end of the back straight – must take quite a lot of energy to start staying-on, get stopped and ‘go again’ as he did. Good on the old horse.
January 6, 2018 at 20:12 #1336027My two main ones came a cropper and only had Silsol 4 places so no joy but well done GM and LS and anyone with place money….and the teenage horse+jockey of course! Still haven’t seen the race as was out all afternoon, sportinglife website still not showing replays as far as I can see and ATR site videos won’t play on my phone.
Did all the fallers get up OK?January 6, 2018 at 20:14 #1336028They didn’t “go like the clappers” in Many Clouds year, Charles; they went a good strong pace not an overly strong pace.

I could feel my will to live fading away half way through reading that I’m afraid to say Ginge.
‘Average speed’? I don’t doubt your O-Level in maths but I’d rather know how quick they go in the Grand National in the first circuit compared to the second.
We’ll have to agree to disagree on this one.

Did all the fallers get up OK?All fallers fine, although the BHA report that Chase The Spud suffered from post-race ataxia and Buckhorn Timothy lost a shoe and came back lame.
January 6, 2018 at 21:26 #1336046Just got to watch the race there now. On the Road still green- was bit unlucky however as he jumped almost too carefully over the first few if anything.
Couldn’t quite be sure as only one angle available on ATR replay, but I thought Firebird Flyer brought down rather than fell. Pity as he was trogging along OK till then.
Impressed by Vintage Clouds as someone else said- made a lot of the running, hampered to a standstill at a stage when they were all feeling it and a loss of momentum then is hard to overcome; one bad error brought him nearly to a standstill again a couple of fences later, then worked his way back to a place. Looks a good honest horse and definitely one to follow (mind you Danny Cook was not for giving up either).
V hard luck WWW backers.
Very well deserved win and second (well any horse that finished too really)January 7, 2018 at 00:10 #1336068Well done to all who found the winner Raz De Maree and what a great ride from 16 year old James Bowen.
Was pleased with the way Vintage Clouds stayed on for fourth after that mistake at the 13th after being hampered by the fall of Wild West Wind who was going like the winner at the time.
Glad to hear that they had all come safely. Jac
