Was allotted 153 on Saturday, no way I can see that he fools Phil Smith into an 8lb drop for schooling in a cross country, particularly as he seems to have a vendetta against Gord for having it away in the handicaps at the fest for the last few years and with this horse in particular blowing apart the KM last year.
One I like for it is Champers on ice, following the same pattern as UTPT last year running him over too short a trip on Saturday was given a very ‘educational’ ride dropped right out of contention and only put into the race after the winner crossed the line finishing like a steam train from last to sixth up the hill. Was on 143 before that race, drop of a few pounds would see him carry a lovely racing weight in the Ultima, money has started to come this morning.

Great post Ian and case well made
January 30, 2017 at 14:41 #1284770Personally I wouldn’t want to be on Champers On Ice on quick ground on the old course over 3m. He’s all stamina. Stick him in the 4-miler – still on quick ground on the old course, but at least he gets an extra mile!
A number of runners look interesting here.

I have Cause of Causes at a price and will follow suit with Champers on Ice.
January 30, 2017 at 15:04 #1284780I try my hardest not to follow the selections of anybody else on here, as not only do I like to stick to my own, but I already have Cause of Causes & Holywell in this race, but it’s a case well made Ian, and having watched the race, it looks a very good spot, and I might have to cover at the 20’s.
Good luck Ian
January 30, 2017 at 16:15 #1284802I’ll join you fellas – good spot, Ian

I don’t tend to play antepost on the handicaps but I think I’ll play COI each way in a multi. You’ve argued his case very nicely. Cheers.
Backed the winner on the day last year but I rarely win on the handicaps at Cheltenham. There always seems to be a plot I’ve missed. I reckon you might have found one here so I’m in. Into a lucky 15 each way he goes.
January 30, 2017 at 17:26 #1284811Not to crab Ian, but very surprised you’re all reacting like this…was pretty obvious he was going for the Ultima or 4 miler after his defeat at Warwick.
January 30, 2017 at 17:29 #1284812I have champers on ice at 16-1 for any race.. started hoping for a soft ground RSA (beat by American at Warwick), I moved on to hoping for a run in the 4 miler (beaten badly on Saturday).. I have now moved onto hoping for a good mark for a handicap and these positive words fill me with hope

No problems, you’re right its not the most difficult spot in the world and I could also be adding up 2 + 2 and coming up with 5, could be way off and he runs in the 4miler. Unless you’re on the inside of these things you’re never 100% for sure.
Just so many things lined up though even before the race to alert you, the strange drop in trip after looking one paced lto if they were thinking 4miler very odd, the fact that its the same race as UTPT, knowing the trainers MO he already had a good mark and wasn’t looking anywhere near RSA grade and then the run itself was, well eyecatching to say the least, strangely though was supported in the market though didn’t drift like a barge at all. If he does get a drop at all think Pipe will find it hard to not run him off whats likely to be a very generous mark. Does seem to show alot of his best form on softer ground though so wouldn’t want it rattling quick, but thats the gamble of AP. Full disclosure I’m also on Mall Dini for this race too, he’s a long term fav of mine and did me a great turn last year, another one they’ve just been messing about with all year running a pertemps winner over 2m lto who do you think you’re kidding
Fully expecting Phil Smtih to clobber Mall Dini with a totally unfair mark though but backed on the off chance he doesn’t.January 31, 2017 at 00:06 #1284908Full disclosure I’m also on Mall Dini for this race too,
I have no idea what’s going to end up in this race, handicap marks, ground, etc, and that’s why I don’t like ante-post betting handicaps, but I think if you’re on Mall Dini, Cause of Causes, Holywell and a certain Fergal O’Brien horse, all each-way, you’ll get two places at the very least.
January 31, 2017 at 00:19 #1284909Yeah, put him up on my DLAP thread for this race a couple of weeks back as well Ian, it looks pretty blatant to me, and I’m sure Smith will be aware. Still very much one to consider though.

I like Champers on Ice too. I still think he can surprise in the RSA. Last saturday he made a mistake at the first and seemed to lost al his confidence. But the 4 miler is a good race as well for him.
February 8, 2017 at 16:53 #1286480HOLYWELL 20/1
Not been here for a bit in this forum. anyway on this handicap no doubt this horse does nought in early stages of season. But comes to life here.Won Pertemps and this race. Was 2nd here last year. And he being aimed here again and think he go one place better.
February 9, 2017 at 15:29 #1286562I think if The Druids Nephew lines up in this he would have a very realistic chance of winning this race again. Off the same mark as when he pretty much won comfortably, he goes well in the spring, and not sure if they are campaigning him with the national in mind this time round, so hopefully this is his primary target.
I missed the fancy prices some of you have already got, but even at 16/1 I’m more than happy to dive in. I won a nice few quid when he won this two years ago, and with the Mulholland stable seemingly flying at the moment, all looks primed for a big run.
Here’s to deja vu……February 13, 2017 at 00:03 #1287168Decent return from a long break today for What’s Happening. He really loves it round here, and whatever setback he met, seems to be behind him, I thought it was a decent effort. I had him in mind for The Kim Muir, but I suppose he could easily figure here, and top off a decent season for Tom George & Adrian Heskin.
February 15, 2017 at 15:02 #1287514Gordon Elliot stated last night that Cause of Causes may head for The Cross Country, en-route to Aintree. Not good news for myself, but if that’s the case I’ll stick with Holywell for the timebeing. Entries due out next week, so will see the state of play then.
