Love this race, and have, touch wood, a very decent record in it, unlike The Summer Hurdle where my record is desperate (I’ll be in no rush to start a thread on that race)
Midnight Shot really appeals at 16’s. He’s a horse I know well, and I’ve been really impressed by his attitude over the larger obstacles, especially last time out, where he fair worked for the win. Remains to be seen how he’ll act off this mark in a race like this, but I like Longsdon at this time of the year, and he looks worth a chance. He did have his moments over hurdles, including an impressive win at Cheltenham, but he’s looked a natural so far, and that’s a big price.
Also at a price is Gentleman Jon, at 25’s. Looked much more like it last time, only fading close home, and no surprise to see Tizzard get another big run from him, as when he won The Badger Ales last year, especially as he’s been dropped another 3 pounds. He looked to have had his own ideas recently, but he really did look threatening at Uttoxeter, and he really does look ridiculously overpriced, and the trainer has already bagged the other big summer prize recently.
Brave Spartacus did me a proper turn in this a couple of years back, and though he seemed to have regressed a fair bit, when he left Reveleys, Gillian Boanas hasn’t done a bad job with him, and he’s ran some respectable races. He’ll be race fit here, and although highly likely he’s not the same horse as when he had his finest moment here, he is 8lbs lower, and that 20’s looks a fair each way price.
JP looks to have 3 live ones here, but the one that interest me most is It’s A Gimme. He’s not been seen out much over the last couple of years, but after a “so-so” seasonal debut, he was a lot better last time, and given that that improvement could continue here, then he could just take a hand off his attractive mark, and you can get 16’s. He’s taken in the last 2 Galway Plates, so he must be showing them something at home, so just possible that this is a stepping stone for that race, but I find it hard to rule him out here also. JP likes this race, so dangerous to write off Cup Final or I’dliketheoption either.
Obviously a big prize, and one of the highlights of the summer jumping calendar, and I’ll definitely run my eye over the final field once known. Too late in the morning to look at any more right now, but no surprise to see those Nicholls and Henderson runners near the head of the market, while if I had to just highlight one more it would be Peter Bowen’s Earthmoves.
For anyone else having an early play in this, please note Ballyboley is a definite non runner.
Brave Spartacus, and It’s A Gimme certainly catch my eye then, but it’s not really a race to go in with a handful, so I’ll stick with these two guys, and just hope that they make it.
Midnight Shot 16’s
Gentleman Jon 25’s
Both each wayGL
July 20, 2017 at 10:26 #1310780I hope you have not mentioned the wnner Bobby!!
I am all over CASINO MARKETS of Emma Lavelle. This horse has good solid form behind some good horses last season and at 16/1 has to be worth an interest. I think if he turns up he may be a single figure price. The other one I may be interested in is Shelford who ran well last time and if ridden with a bit more aggression could be the fly in the ointment.
July 20, 2017 at 23:43 #1310849I bloody better have Raymo lol
Can totally see the appeal of your two, with Casino Market being a model of consistency, while there’s no chance connections of Shelford will be complaining about his 2lb rise from last time. Best of luck with them, if you play both.
Happy with Midnight Shot at the moment, but fear the worst with Gentleman Jon, as I’d have liked to see him jocked up by now, and I might have to hope he gets balloted out rather than withdrawn. If he is a “no show”, I might just revert to one or both of the others I mentioned.
July 21, 2017 at 09:36 #1310868I’ve put a bit E/W at 50s on Shady Glen in the hope that he gets in and that they decide to run this little nippy horse here under a featherweight rather than make him lump nigh on topweight round Cartmel. He’s a decent jumper, won here LTO and a game wee thing who runs well even when trying to concede weight to bigger horses round galloping tracks like Ffos Las. He may get swamped in this company but I’d like to see him given his chance.
I’ve also backed Brave Spartacus E/W at 16s (don’t have the accounts for 20s) and may add another tomorrow, perhaps a Jonjo horse.
July 21, 2017 at 12:24 #1310878Shady Glen out so I took 20s E/W with Paddys on Cup Final– seemed good price so I have more on than I would normally bet.
July 21, 2017 at 16:24 #1310891I’m a bit annoyed with myself. I had a really good look at this race today (haven’t had a chance all week) and most of the value is gone.
Poker School is a very solid fav and Viens Chercher is interesting but neither scream BACK ME at the current prices. Unless it all changes during the day, I’ll probably just place-lay Alcala and be done with it.
July 21, 2017 at 17:01 #1310897I agree that a lot of the value has gone, and Poker School has been shortened up quickly across the boards to no better than 7/1 and looks the likely SP favourite.
I’m betting on 3 in this, none at great prices but fair ones. Like Raymo, I’ve backed Casino Markets at 14/1. He had a good July last year winning 2 handicaps at Worcester and has shown to be up to his mark of 137 when finishing in the places throughout the winter. He’s very well off with Henryville from their last encounter and Emma has put up Leighton Aspell, of whom I’m a massive fan. I’m also on Cup Final but unlike Greengrass I only managed to get 14/1 (well done there on snapping up the value mate). I don’t know how he didn’t win at Hexham last time and looks more than capable of winning a chase of his current mark. The added 1 1/2 furlongs will help him along, especially when you look at his hurdles form. The last one I’m on is It’s A Gimme at 10/1. His last win came in this race 2 years ago and now down to a similar mark this looks plain and simply just another Jonjo plot and I don’t intend to be caught out by it should connections be rewarded for a long term plan.
Good luck lads.
July 21, 2017 at 17:29 #1310903Gentleman Jon balloted out then, so I’ve got that stake money burning a hole in my pocket, and I’ll have another go.
Charles, I’ll join in and side with It’s A Gimme after all. I just wonder if they see him as their summer horse, and possibly realise that this is indeed more realistic than The Galway Plate. Win only on him, but 10’s looks fair.
It may be heart ruling the head, but after collecting from him 2 years back, I just have to be with Brave Spartacus ew 28’s at 5 places. I’ll probably top up again if Skybet go higher.
July 22, 2017 at 00:37 #1310964Have now backed SHELFORD at 10/1 and gone in again on CASINO MARKETS at 14/1 as I really think this will win and I think Shelford will run a huge race too!! Forecasts and exactas at the ready too!!

Oh and by the way have done Midnight Shot for the combos and tricasts too!! LOL
July 22, 2017 at 02:37 #1310973I like two or three here but it isn’t a race I’m getting involved in.
My 1-2-3 for what it’s worth would be:
1) Shelford2) Henryville
3) Casino Markets
I like all three and think they’re all good each way pokes. But that would be 3 each way bets (so 6 bets really) in an early season handicap which simply isn’t my style.
So no bets here for me.
Good luck with Casino Markets though lads.
July 22, 2017 at 09:32 #1310997Brave Spartacus out so I’ve added one more. Did think of doing Wadswick Court when I thought Bowen the Younger was going to be taking 10lb off him, but Adam Wedge is booked and has no claim.
So I’ve put a little E/W on Newton Geronimo at 33s. Quirky, probably too harshly handicapped, hasn’t run over this trip before and might well run his race before the start on the big occasion, refuse to run at all, or take off and run his race before the 3rd fence.
Postitives- should stay on breeding, hope a sympathetic ride from Adrian Heskin will get a good tune out of him, chance he may enjoy the company as he has run well in big hurdles fields.Good luck with your selections all, hope we have the winner somewhere between us.
July 22, 2017 at 10:58 #1311012Completely agree with you on Midnight Shot Bobby. Three wins out
of three over fences, and whilst Cup Final will be 7lbs in on their last run, with just
a fag paper between them, I think the extra 1 1/2F is in his favour. I think he’s going
the right way, and he has a good weight thanks an old pal of mine Henryville, who I feel
I’m deserting here, but it’s a lot of weight to lump around in a competitive race like
this. I’m surprised that the 16/1 is still available, that will do for me
July 22, 2017 at 12:18 #1311029I’ve backed 3 for this one:
Days of Heaven at 9s
Casino Markets at 14s
Midnight Shot at 16sGood luck to everyone with their bets!
July 22, 2017 at 15:36 #1311082Beautifully done by Alcala.
Superb performance by 2nd as well. From my 3 Casino Markets never featured, and it seemed like top-weight was too much for Days of Heaven.
July 22, 2017 at 16:12 #1311090Great race by Alcala and a good ride. Disappointed with Cup Final– don’t know if the track didn’t suit or just not his day. Thought my Newton Geronimo did well considering he didn’t get the handiest of passages. Also liked the look of Lofgren and of course hardy Shelford.
July 23, 2017 at 22:20 #1311214I think Newton Geronimo ran great GAG and I know it isn’t going to happen but I think it will win a race when Nico rides it!!
July 24, 2017 at 01:12 #1311224Yep doesn’t look the easiest esp with that high head carriage but NdB humoured him very nicely for his win at Towcester and I’ll be looking out for him.
