Despite a few each way returns in this over the years, I just cannot find the winner, but I’ll keep on trying, and this year boasts a very strong entry.
Shrewd got me a small return last year, but the damage was already done when Ivan Grozny went lame on the morning of the race. As per, he’s on my shortlist again, but he does come with risks attached, as he clearly wasn’t 100% last time out, and I suspect that for a good part of last campaign, he wasn’t 100% either. Willie Mullins pulled him from The Northumberland Plate pretty late on, as he wasn’t happy with him, and he might just be hard to keep right, having already had a lengthy spell on the sidelines. When he’s good though, he’s very good, and I haven’t totally written off an early go on him at the 20’s. There’s just the thought that he might not make it though. I’ll maybe wait and see if he appears at Galway before deciding.
He’s not the only entry from the Mullins yard, and of the others entered up, the one who really catches the eye, is Open Eagle. I really like the way he got the better of a very strong field in the finale at The Punchestown Festival, and if in the same mood here, he could make a mockery of the 25’s. Like his stablemate, he could easily trap at Galway, and might be advisable to check him out there first of all.
Galway might also be on the agenda for the very versatile, and very likeable Swamp Fox. Tidy winner at Killarney this week, continuing a decent run from him, and no surprise to see him shine at The Festival in a fortnight, certainly considering the range of targets open to him. He looks very good value at the 33’s, though, like Ivan, I got my fingers burnt on him Ante-Post last year, when he didn’t make it to The Greatwood Hurdle, but I’m still seriously considering him as my first play here.
It’s hard to be too negative about Top Tug, he usually runs his race, he should head here, and 25’s looks a very generous price.
Not a typical horse for me to be interested in, and I’m not that clued up with how AOB targets horses such as this guy, but there’s no doubting that Spanish Steps is an intriguing entry, and he’ll surely in time, prove to be better than he showed last time. I suspect that he won’t head here, but he interests me nonetheless at 33’s.
One horse who I continually give a nod to is Prince of Arran, and I was reasonably happy with him in The Ascot Gold Cup. He’s high enough in the weights, but as competitive as this will obviously be, he won’t be quite facing the same grade of opposition this time. Plenty of runs that give him a squeak there, and I’d place faith in him lumping the weight here, and 40’s looks a fair each way price.
Sam Missile got me a decent payday in The Northumberland Plate, and I was delighted for him, as I had him down as very decent from an early stage. To be fair, he didn’t quite seem to want it enough that day when it really mattered, but he came there with every chance, and that run was enough for me to consider him again here, but he has his work cut out to get in. The same applies to Nicholas T, who should have won on Monday, but who now needs a miracle to get in. He’s a horse I like, and I think he’ll become more high profile over the next couple of seasons. I don’t know when the weights are framed for this, but with both horses having no immediate entries, then time is surely running out for them unfortunately.
Gibbs Hill is another who keeps jumping off the page to me, going the right way, this looks perfect for him, and I’m amazed the 16’s is holding.
I’ll hold fire for the timebeing, but these are the ones who immediately caught my attention. There’s 106 entries in total, so probably makes sense to wait, at least until the next forfeit stage, and I could very easily go in a different direction anyway in this, but if I have a change of heart early, it’s likely to be Ivan Grozny 20’s, or Swamp Fox 33’s.

July 22, 2017 at 13:18 #1311044Nice write-up Bobby. It’s a race I really like and I’ve been hanging off as long
as I could as many will drop out, but MOUNT LOGAN is a horse I think
a lot of and he’s running today. If he goes well his price may drop so I’ve taken the
25/1 with Ladbrokes today. He’s always struck me as a decent animal,
and although he’s not been further than 12f, he strikes me as a horse that might
benefit by the extra 2f. He was staying on in the Hardwicke at Ascot last year when
4th behind Dartmouth and Highland Reel over 12f, and last time out at Newmarket, again
over 12f, he had a bit of a tardy start, and looked a bit outpaced at one point but again
ran on at the finish for 3rd. He’s running over 10f today, he’s good enough to win today’s
race at that distance, and I think he will, but I think he could be better over further.
I hope this is the plan
I like the look of Ivan Grozny, as you do, but I’ll hang fire on that one for the time being.

I was of the same opinion last year about Mount Logan, BigG. Seemed a bit one paced and further would suit. However, this year has taken time to settle in races. So going up in trip probably not the thing to do. Also, if “he’s good enough to win today” at 10f; don’t you think if winning/running well he’ll be kept to 10 to 12 furlongs? I’ll keep an eye on how he settles, but imo best chance for Mount Logan running in the Ebor is if he disappoints today. However, in that case he’s likely to drift afterwards.
Value Is EverythingJuly 22, 2017 at 14:32 #1311068Thanks Graham. Good luck with Mount Logan if you do have an early go, but I’m in the same boat, and still haven’t had a go yet. Was on the verge of going with Swamp Fox at the 33’s, but the price has held after his midweek win, and Galway might very well be his primary objective.
July 22, 2017 at 14:42 #1311071Mount Logan got loose before the Steventon and non-runner today. May be there’s a fair bit of temperament.

That was a disappointing Ginge, I thought he might win today without it being his best
distance, but I take your point that it may sway them as what distance to keep him to.
Not sure what will happen after today, I just hope that he is sound. So as it happens,
I could have left him alone this morning for the Ebor. Doh !!
August 4, 2017 at 12:38 #1312766My instinct is still that he won’t go, but he’s never been better, and after shining at Galway (twice) this week, I’ve thrown a couple of quid his way.
August 6, 2017 at 15:31 #1313115I reviewed the entries earlier today and noticed some interesting ones, including the O’Brien pair of US Army Ranger and Sir John Lavery. Willie Mullins has about a dozen entered, but none of them jump out from the computer screen at me. I like Gibbs Hill as a horse but surely has a mountain to climb after been hit with a imperial sized hike in the ratings for his latest win.
After her exploits so far this season, I really like the chances of Natural Scenery who’s 20/1. She looked the winner at Newcastle through much of the Northumberland Plate and ran creditably in the Lillie Langtry on unsatisfactory ground to suggest she’s more than up to winning a race like this off her current mark. I’ve put her up on the ante-post comp but will hold fire on backing her yet as Godolphin have a few entered and may choose to divert her elsewhere. I’ve had a speculative punt on Elidor at 40/1 for now. He was 3rd in this a few years back and looks as good as ever on the back of that 3rd place finish in a Curragh Group 2 last time out. He’ll need a quick surface but if he gets it, that’s a nice price to be sat on.
August 6, 2017 at 16:04 #1313123I know it’s a different trip to the one he just ran over, but deary me Riven Light looks like he has a stone in hand at the moment.
August 9, 2017 at 12:54 #1313334I have had a quick scan today at this and the first horse that strikes me is KIDMENEVER of Godolphins. Ran really weel at ascot when posted wide all the way and ran as though this longer trip will suit and have had a nibble at 18/1.
The other one/two I am interested in are the Varian pair of KING BOLETE and MOUNT LOGAN both 25/1 and both owned by Sheikh Obaida. It will be interesting if either of these turn up for this.

I dare say Sir John’s participation in a 14 furlong handicap is now unlikely given his performance last night. It just goes to show that however much we may lump praise on the Ballydoyle operation they can judge their own horses wrong from time to time just like everyone else.
August 9, 2017 at 18:45 #1313370Great preview as always Bob,I remember the days when Guy Harwood,Sir Michael Stoute and Henry Cecil could lay a 3yo out for this but those days seem over now. However if Mark Johnsons Time to study was to get in he’d be my choice but 25/1 tells you there’s little chance of him doing that.
August 10, 2017 at 11:53 #1313412A race imprinted in my memory from the days when I used to be open to tips. We got the big whisper from Ireland weeks before the 1973 Ebor for a horse named Bonne Noel. Backed it at 33s and my memory is of Christy Roche (an apprentice back then, I think) coming with a late charge to land the money.
I think Paddy Prendergast trained Bonne Noel and, unusually, it went on to run in that year’s Arc which was won by Rheingold.
Happy days…
August 10, 2017 at 16:23 #1313431I love this race!! And Joe I was only twelve back then !! LOL
I remember Crazy and Daarkom winning this in the eighties!!
But from my records I have backed the winner of this five times this century!! LOLAnyway I digress…. Another one I have my eye on for this is WILD HACKED of Marco Botti’s and if he gets in which he might been currently 28th then he won’t start at the current 20/1
August 10, 2017 at 23:15 #1313470Being lazy googlewise but when is the race? Currently blitzing my house and garden but if I get stuck into looking at the Ebor [my favourite race] I won’t get anything done….
August 11, 2017 at 01:00 #1313476Put your feet up Moe, it’s the 26th August at 3.35
