form in the book for Sizing John on heavy and Soft, so i dont really get the drift (albeit i see it has now come back in to around 5/2).

had him at 5/2 and went back in at 3/1. Think it is great value on him. Done nothing wrong since being stepped up to 3 miles. Runs very well fresh and this been the target since the end of last season.

surprised at the support for Cue Card, given his last run, didnt think he was moving that well before the fall.

Sizing John out – ground concerns

Cue Card’s price varies from 7/4 to 7/2

This is due to some firms just not quoting Sizing John and I must admit that I wouldn’t run the horse in bottomless ground myself. I feel there must be some doubt for a horse with more important targets to aim for.

In the circumstances I just had a small bet on Outlander at 10/1. There probably isn’t a lot between them on the gutters and I would rather risk a tenner to win £100 than put £70 on Bristol De Mai at 6/4 to win a fiver more than that.

    Outlander
    10/1 for me.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Well done, Potato – that was an inspired interpretation of the news coming out of the Harrington camp

Yes, Cue Card prices did vary, but didn’t Outlander too?
Without Sizing John, Outlander is a top price 7/1 now.

It is even possible connections could use the going as an excuse not to run – because of the stamina issue as well as fitness.

I just hope traffic stays in this race. I have a feeling he is going to go to Ascot.

    Familiar chain of events…

    Betfair drift…

Interviews with trainer and jockey in racing post easing fears and indicating horse will run…

    Couple of days pass…

    Withdrawn!

Disappointed for the race and the spectacle and was looking forward to seeing another gold cup winner in the flesh but on the other hand happy from a betting point of view…would have preferred if he’d turned up though…

No Ascot. Moore says he runs at Haydock

I’ve lost a little on Sizing John, Zammer; but tbh I did not see connections say the horse would definitely run. There was speculation earlier in the week about the horse’s fitness. Connections dispelled that rumour, but did say they were concerned about very soft ground. Ground is now heavy and they’ve taken him out.

Disappointing for the race and may have a bearing elsewhere too – will SJ run in the King George now?

As someone not going to Haydock and with my pocket talking, I’m looking at my Cue Card 13/2 docket feeling slightly happier.

It’s not as if the ground turning heavy has just come out of absolutely nowhere though…

Just after the Betfair drift there was no indication that his participation was in doubt..

At that time the ground was already soft with a further 20mm of rain forecast. At that point, would it not have been helpful if they had said he was a doubtful runner? In my eyes they knew what the ground would be and had every opportunity to do so…or would it have looked bad so soon after the drift?

Shame for the race, not that my opinion means anything, but i find it hard to believe there saying the ground is the concern  hes won multiple times on soft and at the highest level on heavy, ran some excellent 2nds to douvan on soft ground also

That dosent mean he isnt better on good ground, but he evidently handles it soft/heavy, mind boggling pulling him from such a weak race…

I think the drift itself was to do with people realising there were both questions about Sizing John being at his very best on a goodish surface and (even if acting on it) whether he’d stay the trip on heavy. Therefore doubts about his participation.

But I agree, why connections can’t come clean by actually telling us what circumstances would result in their horse being pulled out – instead of just leaving clues and a guessing game – baffles me.

Robbie powers exact words on the matter ginge

“It was Alan’s wish to go for the £1m bonus. Sizing John is a better horse on better ground but that won’t stop him running on Saturday.

If that isnt connections saying he will run i dont know what is…
