    Fingers crossed Joliff.

Obviously changes things a lot if it does go ahead, but without looking through the final line up closely, the ones that spring to mind for this ground are Withernsea & Stamp Hill.

Both of those have been favourites of mine for a while Bobby. I posted earlier that I was considering
STAMP HILL but thought he would be balloted out. He made the cut, and I checked about
an hour or so ago on Oddschecker and best price was 16s, but Paddy Power didn’t appear on the list. I
checked on their site and they still had 20s so I grabbed that with both hands. That has disappeared
now and they go 14s, although still plenty of 16s about. I mentioned in my last post that I liked TOMMY
TAYLOR, but that I’d hang on to see the draw. Thank @*#% I did, as he doesn’t appear in this or the Silver
Cup. I’ve had a good look at the draw over the past few years, and the conditions in those years. This is
finishing order of the first 6 home over the last 6 years……..

    2016 – 8 6 7 11 10 14 good/soft
    2015 – 8 4 9 5 20 19 good
    2014 – 19 2 26 24 25 1 good/firm
    2013 – 19 18 22 16 14 5 good/soft
    2012 – 8 19 13 2 22 14 heavy
    2011 – 12 16 9 15 22 19 soft

So after serious consideration, and taking into account the very likely heavy going, with possibly
soft at best in some areas, I’ve come to the conclusion that I haven’t a scoobie
There will be strong opinions thrust upon us by “the experts” on the box as to where the
advantage is, but the best I can come up with is that old chestnut, it’s where the strongest
pace is. What is bleeding obvious is that whatever you splash the cash on, they will have
to manage heavy ground. I’m happy enough that STAMP HILL will go on it, and my other trio,
GET KNOTTED, KIMBERELLA and GROWL, all have bits and pieces which suggest they would do okay.
With Kimberella and Get Knotted drawn on one side (9 & 14) and Growl and Stamp Hill drawn
on the other (21 & 24) I suppose it gives me a bit of cover. I normally do a couple or maybe
3 in this, so with 4 I’m definitely finished unless any of them don’t appear on the day.
I just hope the weather doesn’t scupper the whole meeting, I’m just about 50 miles from the
course and it’s nice at present, but it looks like Ayr could be hit with more rain tomorrow.
I think it’s touch and go

    lol Graham

The good news for you is that I won’t jinx you with Stamp Hill. I’m just not going to overthink this now, and after promising not to bet him for a while, I have decided to jinx you instead with Growl.

On reflection, ran better than I had initially thought at Haydock, and if ignoring that Ripon run, 16’s looks ok to me. I think you can sometimes put too much work into finding one further down the weights in these conditions, only for one of the top weights to bolt in anyway. I was at Ayr for the 2004 Scottish National, when it was bottomless, and wanted to hammer Grey Abbey, only to talk myself out of it, and never really forgot that lesson. So Growl as #2 for me then, win only, and saves a lot of time going back over them. Withernsea at 20’s with 6 places, completes my trio.

GL all, and just hope it’s on now.

If it happens I already have two runners and have just added two more.
MOBSTA and JOHNNY BARNES both like soft ground and at 25/1 and 12/1 I seem to have a good spread across the course!!

I really do fancy RENE MATHIS at 25/1 though but the draw kind of puts me off filling my boots!! :good: :good:

    Meeting been called off.

What happens now? Will the meeting be held on another day? Been following the sport for only a couple of years and I don’t recall this happening.

Can’t see it being rearranged, certainly not at Ayr because this is looking like a serious structural problem in the ground. Tim Easterby suggested a drain had collapsed.

I (foolishly) backed Projection ages ago, but it wasn’t declared. I’m guessing that ante post bet is lost even though the race was zbandoned? Anyone confirm that…?

You will get your money back if the meeting in not rearranged. You cannot lose money on a race that never happened. It was the same in 1993 and the Grand National. Even horses who were out of the race already had to be refunded because the race never actually took place.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Tony Calvin (whose ante-post selection shortened by a couple of points) is suggesting that the bookies somehow either cloud-seeded Ayr or sabotaged the drainage system to get the meeting abandoned.

Time to call the men in white coats?

Could they add it to the Musselburgh card on Sunday?

Thanks Steve. I reckoned that would be the case. Bookmaker ‘call centre operative’ says no, but I suspect she may be wrong as in principle with an abandoned race I could neither win nor lose. I’ll see what unfolds over coming day or do on the account.

Playing devil’s advocate, can we say 100% that the course was fully competent in their attempts and avoid this? It doesn’t seem to be just an issue with rain but a structural or drainage issue more so. If that is true then how wasn’t anything noticed in the build up to Scotland’s biggest flat fixture?

The staff member probably doesn’t know the special rules for abandoned races and races moved to another track.

I copied these rules from Paddy Power’s website, but as they say themselves, they are based on Tattersalls’ principals and will therefore apply across the industry:-

In line with principals laid down by Tattersalls Rules of Racing, ante-post bets will be void under the following circumstances, otherwise bets stand:
    a. If the race is abandoned or declared void.

    b. If the venue of the race is altered or postponed to a later date at a different track.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

We understand the race will not be rescheduled so all bets void.

I’m not holding my breath on Bet365 giving me my Aeolus money back.

I had 4 on Charles, 2 with Paddy Power, one with Skybet and one with Bet365 (3 ante post,
1 after final declarations with PP). I’ve already had the bets refunded with PP and Sky, not
as yet from Bet365, but from memory I think they waited until after the actual race was due
to run when I last had an ante post returned by them. I don’t think you will have any problem
getting your money back on Aeolus.
