Or “The Ladbroke” as it used to be known……….
Not a race to go mad in at this stage, but I’ve had a few quid on one of my favourite horses in training, the continually underrated Sternubin, who’s widely available at the 20’s.
I”m not sure he’s a cert to go anyway, and he certainly isn’t a cert to start, even if he does get there, but had to have the riskiest of bets on Labaik at 33’s, as if he was less temperamental he’d surely be near the head of the market.
Just in case Labaik isn’t with them, and let’s face, there’s a good chance he wont be, I’ve taken a chance on Wolf of Windlesham, who’s only found the heavily gambled winner too good for him in the last couple of minutes at Kempton. I like that kind of prep, and there’s plenty of 25’s about.
December 8, 2016 at 02:04 #1276013I had absolutely no idea what this race was when I clicked the link to the this thread. Who’d have know it was the Ladbroke? When did they rename it?
Sternrubin is one i always take a look at.
Not an antepost race for me though
December 8, 2016 at 14:28 #1276059Yeah MoM, it is definitely more of a mouthful than The Ladbroke. Hopefully Sternrubin will make it on the day, and I wouldn’t put you off him.
December 8, 2016 at 15:25 #1276070It was renamed because Ladbrokes are no longer an Approved Betting Partner, I believe.
Spent a bit of time on this last night when insomnia struck and will post some thoughts later but I will say now that Jolly’s Cracked It looks outstanding value with Stan James at 16s – twice the price he is with some others. He half-won this last year and you need to assume he’s well forward to be entered at all so there must be a reasonable chance he will turn up.
December 8, 2016 at 16:06 #1276073Backed JCI last year and lucky to get the DH in my opinion. Sternrubin has also become one of my faves with his never-say-die attitude. Although if Rayvin Black also runs then there could be an almighty scrap for the lead. WoW will probably need decent ground so who knows if we’ll get it at this time of year. He helped me win a few quid at Sandown in April at decent odds against the Mullins/Nicholls duo
December 10, 2016 at 12:23 #1276461I think they are being very careful with him, but the Skelton trained Meet The Legend has got a lot more to offer I think. I couldn’t chance the 12-1 at this stage though as he has been a late withdrawal before with ground concerns.
December 10, 2016 at 13:13 #1276493Jut love horses like him Homer, and I’m hoping we see him next week.
Another 2 who catch the eye here are De Name Escapes Me, & Chesterfield. I’ll be very interested to see if they stand their ground on Monday. Both look likely types for this, and both very nice prices at the moment, at 20’s and 25’s.
December 12, 2016 at 18:30 #1276916Happy to see Sternrubin stand his ground here, and but would like more cover than just Wolf of Windlesham. With Labaik (predictably) not going, then I’ll happily have a go on Chesterfield at the 25’s, with the 6 places already available from Sky.

Ascot, like Newbury, not a Jockey Club Racecourse and Ladbroke had opportunity to sponsor.
Jolly’s Cracked It chucked in to go close again this year.
December 12, 2016 at 19:09 #1276930I love this race!!
And to completely Jonah myself I have backed the winner a fair few times. I remember Willows saviour winning me a right few quid a couple of years ago and Hendo has done me favours in this more than once but anyway I digress!!
The two I am initially interested in are Feargall which ran really well behind Sternrubin last time out only fading in the last furlong having been the only one to go with the winner earlier.25/1 would be very interesting!!
The other one I am interested in is Le Rocher of Nick Williams. If you disregard the bounce factor this had really good novice form two years ago having beaten the triumph hurdle second twice prior to cheltenham and has had a good blow out this season and looks like it needed it too which is not unexpected. 20/1Of the market leaders I would lean towards brain Power which IMO won very easily at sandown last time out and was value for a lot more than 3/4 of a Length.
December 12, 2016 at 19:36 #1276937VTC,
Yours and others commitment to detailing the runners for theses races, and the thorough evaluations that they produce, is outstanding. I wish I could contribute a bit but I am a night before jobber.
December 12, 2016 at 20:14 #1276942Thanks Cowboy
December 13, 2016 at 18:33 #1277053This usually goes to a young well handicapped horse – I’ve shortlisted Sternrubin, who although isn’t that well treated off 144, he is only 2 lb higher than winning at Ascot a few months ago when all out. He is such a game front runner and still only 5 even after running 16 times, could be the type to improve and go close again over this C&D. I think JCI is too high in the weights personally and prefer stablemate Meet the Legend, who makes his handicap debut off just 138 after a decent run in graded company at Kelso – his victor that day Le Prezien is now rated in the 150’s so he must have a good chance, although I’d prefer him to have a warm up run perhaps. Skelton could be the man to watch in these high quality handicap hurdles after claiming the Greatwood.
Mick Jazz is another I’m interested in being from the mighty Eliott yard who’s won this race twice in recent times. He ran well behind Top Notch last season when with Harry Fry, and after running a prep race at Firehouse when hampered in the run in, he is still on 133 which could be lenient – he finished 2nd to your initial selection VTC Labaik and I think the form is strong with third home that day Le Martalin a decent yardstick when 3rd in the Royal Bond.
I too like Wolf of Windlesham, who was running an almighty race when coming down at the last in the Greatwood and runs off the same mark – the only issue is that he does prefer good ground, so I think conditions will be against him with the rain forecast.
Others to mention are Diego Du Charmil and Modus, but My main fancy is Consul De Thaix who looks very well handicapped to me off 132. He stayed on dourly in a good race at Sandown behind stablemate Brain Power, and has not gone up in the handicap as it was a listed race. Winners of this race have often run at the festival so this one ticks the box when midfield in the Triumph. He could may be do with 2m4f in time but think he’s in a good position to win here.
December 13, 2016 at 19:49 #1277066Joliff, Mick Jazz will run of 141 and Consul de Thaix of 135
December 13, 2016 at 20:11 #1277068Ah bugger the Sporting Life card hadn’t been updated then! – http://www.sportinglife.com/racing/racecards/17-12-2016/ascot/racecard/755820/wessex-youth-trust-handicap-hurdle-grade-3
I base a lot of my research using SL so I’m glad you’ve pointed out their correct ratings Bobbie – I might use RP from now on! Will still go with Consul De Thaix regardless of this 3 lb discrepancy!
December 13, 2016 at 21:14 #1277076I like him too Joliff. Henderson said he did very over the summer and was very complimentary about him in the RP stable tour.
I also like Chesterfield. Handicapper dropped him 7 lb about 10 days ago which was a real bonus. I’m sure the trainer wouldn’t start him here if he wasn’t 100% ready. I do know he took him for a racecourse gallop st Kempton last week.
I loved the way he travelled when he won at Cheltenham, though he’s not the most fluent hurdler. No doubt the trainer has been working on this.December 14, 2016 at 10:43 #1277124I think they are being very careful with him, but the Skelton trained Meet The Legend has got a lot more to offer I think. I couldn’t chance the 12-1 at this stage though as he has been a late withdrawal before with ground concerns.
Sadly I have missed the 12-1 and he does look very popular now. The best I can get now is 8-1, so I will just wait now and see if he is declared.
