I think he’s saying, “i made a cock up with my comments last week and we’re going to have to take a hit for it to limit the bad press”.

It was more than just a cock up.
What about all those who backed Vautour for the Gold Cup with another firm due to Ricci’s “cock up”?
What about punters who’ve backed another horse for the Ryanair because of Ricci’s “cock up”?

Well, if that’s the case, he’ll be paying out on the runner-up in the Ryanair should Vautour win it

I’d say they will. Time will tell.

Oh dear. The most exciting day of the year tarnished by Ricci’s greed. Disgusting behaviour.

    Shocking inconsiderate decision!!

These people should consider the image of racing and not just their own pockets!!

I have mentioned on another thread about trainers skill or lack of it involvimg entries but it seems these owners with bottomless pockets just chuck money at it!!
And I am not talking out of my pocket even though I di back Vautour Ante post !!

This decision stinks and punters have been misled and misinformed regarding this issue!!

I know they don’t run them for you and me but they must take some responsibility for their actions and not just shrug their shoulders and hide behind a phrase like ” it is in the horses best interest” !!

    ITS POPPYCOCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-( :-( :-(

I think they are doing the best for the horse, in respect of don’t believe he’ll stay.
Issue is the totally misleading words.

Ricci on RUK now and has apologised for his comment that it would be GC or nothing, said that the plan was always to go for the GC but that Mullins said that as of Sunday his work had been good but nowhere near what he was doing this time last year and as a result it was not in the best interest of the horse to attempt the GC off the back of that. Believes going in that the Ryanair represents his best chance of winning at the Festival.

Also made a mention that Betbright as a gesture would payout on people that have backed him (outside of NRNB terms) for the GC as if he had won the race.

My question(s) to those slating him would be this, if they made no mention of this now and ran him in the GC and he was beaten then they explained this issue after the race would you be saying that he shouldn’t have run in the GC and that they have misled punters? Or if they mentioned this today but said he would still run in the GC regardless and he ran poorly, would you be saying why didn’t they go for the Ryanair? My guess is that they would of got slated no matter what they did.

At the end of the day, plans do change and they can fraustratingly change at the most inopportune time but that is the risk you take with ante post betting (especially if you didn’t take NRNB terms) – I am sorry that people have been burned by this but there was always a possibility that this could have happened.

I don’t care what the issues are, when you publicly state Gold Cup or nothing, you are conning people full stop. Disgraceful! After hoping to see Vautour strut his stuff in the Gold cup, I certainly won’t be cheering it on in the Ryanair. Utter disgrace to the punter and Ricci bloody well knows it.

The lesson to learn here for punters is to avoid placing bets where the horse has multiple entries, This happens every year with the Mullins stable and to a lesser extent Jonjo Oneil’s. I have More of That for the JLT, Taquin De Seuil for the handicap, Vautour for the Gold Cup,Yanworth @ 14/1 for the Supreme and Annie Power for the mares hurdle doubled up with Thistlecrack @ 8/1, they are all running in different races. Take the positives out of this decision. They must be really pleased with the condition of Djakadam and confident of a similar performance for the Gold Cup as last year. I backed Vautor NRNB so will switch my bet to Djakadam. If VautoUr is only at the level of his seasonable debut he ain’t gonna with the Ryanair but his prescence will push out the odds of his competitors.

Ricci Rich and Willie Mullins are just saying words, don’t count on them (the words). That’s what this Cheltenham has taught me. Mullins talking of Annie in the World H and OLBg Mares, now she goes Champ H….I hope they both get beaten.
Bugger them, wish the press would not cite them (Ricci and Mullins).

    Best Wishes

LD73, if the preview nights have any value at all it is in loose tongues. Ruby said 2 weeks ago he would be doing all he could to persuade Ricci to run Vautour in the Ryanair. Last week Tony Mullins (brother of the trainer) said at a preview that Vautour ‘runs in the Ryanair. He’s only in the GC in case Djakadam doesn’t make it.’ That obviously set a cat among the pigeons and the following night Ricci gave the assurance it was Gold Cup or nothing, and things settled down again.

This ‘last 24 hours’ stuff from connections is nonsense, in hindsight. Ruby and Mullins are obviously convinced that with Vautour out of the way, Djakadam wins the Gold Cup. Stick him in the Ryanair and owner, trainer and jock get two for the price of one.

I’ve got no problem losing my money AP – been doing it long enough. Even this morning I had to say ‘Oh, well, the rumours were right.’ But what really got to me was Ricci deciding to pay out on Vautour – not refund stakes – pay out as the winner on the horse he is saying isn’t well enough to even run, never mind win. Sickening decision, and I hope he is properly pressed on it by a journo with some balls- ironically, that will probably be Lydia.

People make mistakes and all you can do is hold your hand up and apologise for the comment (which he has done), at the time that was probably their thinking but if they feel the horse is in good form but not in the same form going into the festival as he was last year would you prefer that he not run at all? Or should he be re-routed for the race that plays to all his strengths and not potential weaknesses?

To think that there was no chance of him being switched to the Ryanair I think is being naive as even with the best of intentions plans can always change…perhaps you would have preferred if he had either said both races were on the table from day one or ignored answering the question altogether.

Whatever you think of him, to me in his interviews he always happily gives more information on his horses purposed plans (probably much more than Mullins would like) than any other owner would and in this case that was probably the wrong thing to do as it has come back to bite him firmly on the ass.

    LD73,
Ricci said “Gold Cup or nothing”. That’s a no if’s or buts statement, it’s categorical. It means if they don’t believe he’s fit enough for the Gold Cup then Vautour doesn’t go for anything.

Had he said “Vautour goes for the Gold Cup” I wouldn’t have a problem with them changing their minds. All ante-post punters know owners and trainers can change their minds, but “Gold Cup or nothing” was so categorical it misled punters.

Steep – he didn’t say he wasn’t well enough to run just that while his work was good it wasn’t the spectacular stuff they were seing this time last year and that a Vautour at maybe only 90% wouldn’t be enough to win a GC and running him (reading between the lines over a distance past his best) could actually do damage to him.

My previous comments on these forums on him have always stated that I have never been convinced the GC was ever the right race for him – the Djakadam issue (encouraging noises coming off the back of his fall and chest injury) has also had a big influence on things and obviously Ruby would prefer to win two G1 instead of one.

I honestly believe that they desperately wanted him to be the GC horse as until recently (Douvan) he has always been considered as the superstar of the whole yard but hand on heart the Ryanair is the tailor made race for him (even a 90% Vautour) and the KG to me proved that 3m is his limit distance wise.

Could they have made this known earlier……..yes but maybe they were hoping his last pieces of work would be like last year and convince them to run but instead it ended up being the final nail in his GC coffin.

Point taken but it is the ultimate goal so an owner will always hope….in hindsight he did come out and say that it was a mistake to say that and he has apologised for the comment….we are all human afterall.

Always thought Vautour would go Ryanair regardless of what Ricci said.

Ricci, for a man who’s normally so animated, looked very downtrodden this morning, and it’s quite clear he doesn’t call the shots, as is usually the case for owners who have horses with WPM. The 2012 Lexus Chase is all you need to refer to, to work out more or less which horse goes where from this stable.
