P&C has something wrong – probably breathing going by head carriage and weak finishing. Festival-wise too late now for a breathing op of any substance.
February 6, 2016 at 15:09 #1232578Is My Tent or Your’s due out before the festival?
I know he is a gelding but it will take more than chopping off his peanuts to settle him and without a prep he’ll pull away any chance of getting near a place, the long lay off is a real worry, cant be having him at all for this.Going to have a racecourse gallop somewhere (wouldn’t be surprised if it’s Newbury) before being aimed at the Kingwell at Wincanton. Not much time between then and Cheltenham and for a horse who hasn’t run for a considerable time could (the word escapes me).
Value Is EverythingFebruary 6, 2016 at 23:07 #1232630He’ll probably end up pulling a neck muscle and end up with a high head carriage…..

February 6, 2016 at 23:45 #1232635Pre-race I don’t think I had read anyone else mention his dodgy head carriage. Now it is as if everyone has just woken up. Amazing. William hill now going an ultra generous 33/1. Any takers?
I’ll still be backing him. Part of me is thinking that Peace And Co is one of those enigmatic types (like Bird’s Nest) who’ll pop up when he feels like it. I thought that in today’s race, he ran like he was bored/lacking interest.
February 7, 2016 at 00:13 #1232636i wonder what this is being based on??some horses just don’t train on………this horse has zero chance in the champion hurdle…..i’d be shocked if he even runs in it
February 7, 2016 at 01:34 #1232645The fact that the English challenge was so lacking (i.e. we knew the existing horses were not good enough) meant that before he even set foot on the track this season he (and to some extent MTOY) were the great white hopes that everyone was praying would have some sort of chance.
If you look at his form before this season it was asking you to take a massive leap of faith to believe that he could make the jump in just his second season hurdling (a notoriously difficult proposition in a normal year for a 5 yr old to do) to become the main English Champion Hurdle contender. He scrapped home in the Triump last year against two horses (Top Notch & Hargam) that this season have had their own limitations fully exposed against the likes of Irving (just not good enough), Identity Thief (3rd place claim at best) & Old Guard (also exposed).
It was a poor run considering that he didn’t pull anywhere near as hard as he did in some of his races last year (which he was able to still win) so when he did come of the bridle he should have found something and being that he won all his races on soft ground last year I don’t see how the ground can be used as an excuse – unfortunately for connections, they don’t really have anywhere else to go with him but the Champion so they have got to be hoping that a true run race and better ground (who is to say that he will actually act on it) brings about some improvement as a place could be up for grabs if one or two underperform.
Problem they have with MTOY is the fact that he could put up a great performance in the Kingwell but it could see him not building on that going into the Champion shortly after due to the dreaded ‘bounce factor’. If Wincanton is also still testing come race day, I would not be surprised if they gambled and went straight to Cheltenham without a run or even look for a race on the all weather (if there is something suitable for him).
February 7, 2016 at 03:09 #1232650Faugheen is as close to a certainty as it’s possible to get in horse racing IMO. I wouldn’t even lay at 1/10.

The intention still appears to run. Strange decision. Maybe it is case of it being more embarrassing if he gets turned over in another ordinary race.
February 7, 2016 at 13:56 #1232692There seems an unusual lack of concern in the camp about P&C, given what he’s done so far.
Henderson keeps making positive statements about his homework, and seeing the way he travels in his races, you can understand why he would impress on the gallops. But at the business end he’s finding nil. His head carriage has never been totally conventional, but it was very noticeable yesterday. Given that Jacob reported him making a noise after Cheltenham, and going out so tamely yesterday, they must have looked at his breathing.
The trouble is that you cannot test breathing under race conditions. I’d bet a fair amount the horse is struggling to breathe. Horses often carry their heads that way because they’re reaching for air – much as a human does when getting really tired swimming.
I read a comparison of Cue Card before his epiglottal as being asked to race ‘with a dishcloth stuffed in his throat’. I’m not saying that is what is wrong with P&C, but his finishing gives every indication that it could be.
I think LD’s point that he simply might not be as good as many think, is a fair one. But even at that, he should have beaten those horses yesterday.

Henderson said: “We’re going to have a look at his breathing apparatus in the morning.
“He just hasn’t seen his race out as well as he could have and there’s a thought that he might have made a noise. We couldn’t see anything there so we’ll just have a look. But he was fine this morning.
“We’ll just keep an eye on it. It’s been so horribly stop-start. He’d had just the one run, but he didn’t really have a run.
“Everybody said ‘Why did he run so badly at Cheltenham?’. He didn’t run badly. He was just like a headless chicken. It was no run.
“Effectively, you don’t have a race if you just run flat out for a mile. That’s not having a race. So to be honest that was all intents and purposes his first race since the Triumph Hurdle.
“It’s been a bit of a hotch-potch preparation in that, as you know, we were trying to run a fortnight ago and although we mended it pretty quick, when you miss three days you might as well miss a week.
“It wasn’t ideal. I’m not making excuses, he will come on for the race quite a lot. But that’s not the point really – he switched off, he jumped well, he travelled well, he just didn’t come home.
February 7, 2016 at 18:38 #1232718Faugheen looks good but Identity Thief could be the EW play however in the without Fav market I like Sempre Medici EW
February 10, 2016 at 13:08 #1232979…and so the obvious steadily unrolls . . .
The trainer reported in his exclusive Stan James blog on Wednesday: “Following his run on Saturday we have been looking at Peace And Co’s respiratory [system] and although there is not a whole lot to see or hear, we feel cauterizing his palate, which is a fairly straightforward procedure – without the need for a general anaesthetic – would benefit him.
“That procedure is being performed this morning and only necessitates a short period of rest, which will not affect his intended participation at the Festival.”
February 10, 2016 at 14:27 #1232985Right decision Joe, something is wrong and you’d think it has to do with breathing. Hopefully for us it’ll do the trick, have my doubts though.
Trapped eppiwotsit in the summer?Value Is EverythingFebruary 17, 2016 at 13:47 #1234004With the news of Faugheen it surely makes sense to send Annie Power to a now weak looking Champion, rather than take on Thistlecrack in the World hurdle.
February 17, 2016 at 13:52 #1234008For the owner yes, the stable still has two live chances for this however so it will be interesting to see how it pans out.

February 17, 2016 at 13:55 #1234011Those who wanted to see AP in the race a couple of seasons ago now may belatedly get their wish – she will need to be supplemented but she would be automatic favourite if they do
February 17, 2016 at 13:56 #1234012Can’t see Ricci not wanting a runner after having it pretty much sewn up with Faugheen.
