Can any of the form boys on here enlighten me about the tactics adopted by Noel Fehily on Thomas Brown. A quick glance throught the horse’s previous runs on the RP site reveal that for all of his previous wins he has either made all or sat handy “tracking the leaders”.

So why does Fehily decide to sit last, ultimately getting caught out when trying to make up ground when the pace quickened?

I only ask because I also notice that the two least successful performances in this horse’s career were when 8th in a listed Newbury bumper (“in rear, virtually pulled up 6 out”) and in the Albert Bartlett Hurdle (“midfield…tailed off when pulled-up before last”).

To my simplistic eyes, this well backed favourite’s chances were significantly compromised within the first furlong based upon what we know about how he apparently likes to be ridden.

    ^ Was it deliberate?

Doubt it, Thomas Brown has his quirks, at best when racing prominently and can spit the dummy out when unable to get his way. With so many horses around, may be he didn’t want to line up? If a deliberate strategy would be very strange.

Just seen the start again, lined up wide, on the front line – where I’d expect a quirky horse like him. Didn’t get at all a good start and the front line went hell for leather. No chance of getting in to a prominent position; sulked. Sadly lost the race at the start, just one of those things that can happen.

Although looks as though had he got a prominent position wouldn’t have done him any good the way the race was run. Those that went off fast finished poorly.

I agree with that Ginger, he wasn’t travelling at any time and I wasn’t
that surprised to see him get a fence wrong and come down.

Theatre Guide made up for it for me, but it was disappointing not to at
least get a run out of TB.

Cheers GT, easily the result for me, though didn’t like the call during the commentary for Opening Batsman finishing well when he was just off screen, he was one of my smaller returns, and had made most of my profit through him during the week.

Back in third, Roc D’Apsis looks genuine enough, and he looks worth keeping an eye on, as does Ballykan, who’s price has suprisingly held for his engagements at Cheltenham. Interesting.

Very very happy though, as in a race where I normally do well, if I had just stuck to my guns and went for Champagne West & Ziga Boy, it would have been a big loser for me.

This was definitely a one off though. Delighted with how that went, but too much hard work to do it on a regular basis. I’ll stick to The Gold Cup and Grand National from now on.

And just consider this: No Smad Place, no Many Clouds, no Wakanda and this is the MOST IMPRESSIVE winner of a handicap all season long. Just can’t wait to see Cue Card land the GC spoils…..

Best form is in the Bet365 Gold Cup. I’d have thought Hadrian’s Approach would probably need further than the 3 mile handicap at Cheltenham Raymo, especially if it turns to goodish ground. He’s in the Grand National and is well weighted, but jumping and the fact he’s more a hold up horse makes me think Aintree is not ideal. May be back to Sandown for the Bet365?
