Deteriorating ground set me looking at The Giant Bolster, and wondering what his performances were like in double figure fields.

Since he finished 7th of 18 in the 2011 Hennessy, he’s only run in 4 fields of 10 or more –
    1st
2nd bt 2l in Gold Cup
3rd beat a length in Gold Cup
    PU in Gold Cup.

Headgear left off today for first time in a long time and he has his ground too

    Took some 65 on Betfair

Houblon Des Obeaux and Fingal Bay both look ok at the prices.
A bit more rain wouldn’t go amiss and will help their causes.

Nath if ‘Fingal Bay’ doesn’t burst a blood vessel he’s one of the handicap snips and has to avenge his defeat of ‘Smad Place’ at these weights. He’ll love the ground more than anything pal too.Good luck.

Well done to Smad Place, just a brilliant round of jumping.
The race turned out to be a complete disaster for me, with
THE YOUNG MASTER departing at the first, I hate not getting
a run for your money. Thankfully he seemed ok after the fall.

It hurts even more as a couple of years ago I was never done
singing the praises of SMAD PLACE, I really fancied him for the
Gold CUP. He was a good horse but kept missing out on the big
races, or the ones I bet on him.

I lost faith with him, and even before the race I was thinking
I hope this doesn’t come back to haunt me. It did big time

Very well done CHIVERS, I hope you did well out of him :good:

Well done Chivers and Wasps, the only posters I could find on here who tipped SP (with support from Moe)

As Gord says, he was well fancied by a few last year, but had never been convincing in seeing races out. Once again, a breathing op, similar to the one Cue Card had, I believe, has worked the oracle. The 2nd winner today at Newbury (Aloomomo the other) to benefit from such an op. I can’t believe that these ops were not made declarable long ago. They’re about the most potent insider-trading weapon you could get.

Cheers Gord, I’m in good company then, even though I’m still licking my wounds a bit.

Was well disappointed with my 2, who ran stinkers………but consoling myself with the 250’s to 270’s I’ve got got for him in The Cheltenham Gold Cup. Realistically, I can’t see him being good enough for that, especially with the stellar line up we’re expecting, but one to hopefully keep me warm during the winter.

Great shout Chivers and Wasps, well done guys

Great bet, Bobby. A hot year but you have the benefit of not knowing just how much difference the wind op has made to him

Another great Super Saturday performance to talk about. The season has warmed up nicely.

I had no idea he’d had a breathing op; even my horses to follow book made no mention of it. They do need to be declared. Other than that I’ve just watched it properly on +4 and it was a superb display of jumping.

The Hennessy is a genuine NH race and a much better one in my opinion than the GN. Truly a great performance by Smad Place given the fact that he spent so much time over hurdles. His season’s targets are strictly limited I would suggest and it might pay off to start considering the GN for him rather than the Gold Cup.
I’m still convinced that he might bag a weak G1 race, maybe he could go for the Ericsson Chase at Leopardstown next.

Cheers Joe, I like to have a few in The Gold Cup at big prices, but cut back a lot more this season, as it looks like a race for one of the big guns this season.

Still got a few loud ones though, and very happy with Smad :good:

Breathing op was reportedly similar to the one Cue Card had. I know these ops are very common and that the difference they make can range over a broad spectrum, but the BHA should, imo, grade them in their severity (e.g. the epiglottal surgery Smad Place and Cue Card had being a Grade 1 and, say, the application of a nasal strip being a 5) and mark them in the form pages with the number of runs the horse has had since. BO1, for example, would be the abbreviation for a horse appearing for the first time since an op.

Must point out that I don’t want to detract from such a great performance by moaning about breathing ops,but it is frustrating hearing about one after a race.

Smad Place: After “a little wind op”, he made taking return against Fingal Bay at Kempton; e-w chance

This was in the comments section of the race in the RP online.
