Thanks G, but no real harm done, only a small bet, always wary when betting horses with multiple entries, kind of expected him to head to Ireland……….happy to take a chance with the 16’s on Sam Winner, and I’ll go in again if he goes bigger.

October 31, 2015 at 15:26 #1219872Spot on, Gord.
Good to see the old horse not only win again, but to find under pressure, which he hasn’t for a long, long time. Interesting that C Tizzard said after the race that when they saw the video of the trapped epiglottis ‘it was so bad, I’m surprised he could even trot, never mind gallop.’ That was certainly evidenced on track. Hopefully he’s fixed for good, and such a pity they didn’t catch it in time for the prime of his career.
October 31, 2015 at 15:28 #1219873Wiping the egg well and truly off my face…fair play to Cue Card today that was a good performance (by horse and trainer) against good rivals.
His next race (assuming it will be something like the Betfair) will tell us where he stands against the better G1 horses – I am still of the opinion that his stamina won’t hold up in a Gold Cup (especially one run like last years race) but on flat tracks (Wetherby, Haydock & Kempton) he is a player on this performance.
Just thinking that the King George could end up being as hard to win as the Gold Cup this season
October 31, 2015 at 15:34 #1219874Well my Saturday punt on MANY CLOUDS may have gone awry, but I’m
delighted to see CUE CARD showing something of the old form, which
I thought had gone for good.He looked the winner a good way out, and more importantly he saw the
race out in good fashion, not stopping as if he had been shot as in
the King George a couple of years back.Looks like you have your pal back for a while Joe

Such a shame he’ll be 10 in a few weeks. Of everything I watched before Vautour, I thought he was the most promising fencer for decades. I wonder now if that epiglottis first got trapped on the run-in at Kempton in 2013. I have certainly never seen such an incident as that; a horse going from absolute cruise control to almost a dead stop, before somehow getting himself over the last.
I think connections put that stop down to a back problem, but every time since, he has gone to nothing as soon as a race has hotted up, and it’s hard to believe that those so close to the horse didn’t look sooner at every aspect, especially his breathing. Still, let’s wait and see what’s left of that great engine, for whatever time remains to him. I don’t know what they do with a trapped epiglottis. Can it be fixed permanently? Who knows…If so, he could yet win another good race, even at his age. But he’s running into a generation of Chasers the like of which I can’t recall. Don Cossack looks imperious. Vautour is potentially the biggest monster of all. Don Poli…Djakadam…Road to Riches. Whatever, it will be an utterly fascinating season.
Just as a footnote, I’d have expected Many Clouds to run better than he did. Looked a bit laboured to me, and I hope the National hasn’t done for him, as it has for so many others. The Hennessy will tell a tale.

him plenty short for this, or he could be another who has fallen foul of the
curse of the National. I sincerely hope it is the former, it wouldn’t do my
TTF competition chances a lot of good if it is the latter
He didn’t ever seem that happy bowling along, he never looked like getting to
the leading pack. I just hope he picks up for the rest of the season.October 31, 2015 at 18:21 #1219890I was stood next to Mr Hemmings at Wetherby and was concerned to see Many Clouds almost pull up before the winning post [was out of camera shot]. I said ‘is he all right’ and he said ‘first race of the season…he just got tired’ Hope he’s right; I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more beautiful horse before. Was so nervous that [as usual] I hardly watched the race but I’m so pleased for the Tizzards and Paddy. He was saying what a young horse he is [late April foal] so was really a 7 year old when he won the National. Of course, he didn’t tell me that his other horse was going to win the next race but that’s why he’s a millionaire and I’m a pauper
October 31, 2015 at 18:39 #1219892Many Clouds is a fine looker, Moe, must have been great to see him in the flesh. He has a gracious owner too. I saw Mr H at Kelso one day, going into the little ‘charity’ cafe there (you pay a fiver for sandwiches and soup: profits to charity). They told Mr H he was too late, they were just closing. He nodded and smiled and gave her £20 before walking away.
October 31, 2015 at 19:02 #1219907I’ve got his autograph next to Many Clouds in the racecard. I’ve got so much respect for Mr Hemmings; he does so much for endangered breeds, such as Clydesdales etc. Seems that MC’s birthday is the same day as the Queens and my mum! When I work out how to do it I’ll put a photo up [they’re not very good, though].
October 31, 2015 at 23:17 #1219918Sounds like a special day Moe, and Mr Hemmings sounds like an absolute gent.
It’s nice to hear from your experience of him and that of Joe, that he is
so down to earth, even though he is worth squillions.I hope even more now that Many Clouds has a great season for him. I’d love
to see your photo if you manage to work out how to upload it to the site.
You’re not alone there Moe, I’m a bit of a technophobe myself. I keep learning
how to do something on the PC or using my phone (normally shown by my son)
and then have to learn how to do it all over again in a couple of months
time
November 1, 2015 at 00:32 #1219920My son won’t show me how to do it as he thinks his 20 second tutorial the other week should have been enough. Managed to get my photo on Facebook [which means I now exist]with his help but that was that. My camera is dead slow and I keep getting photos of horses bottoms
The owners and trainers all seem to watch the races on the screen by the paddock which is where we stay. Menorahs owner was there last year, along with NTD [who was expecting a bit run from Double Ross]. The people from New Beginnings were there; they usually have Mr McGoldrick with them but they weren’t given much notice this year. I made them promise to bring Nanton next year. We reckon we prefer Charlie Hall day to Cheltenham [but don’t tell anyone we said that]. Kilcooley looked very good.November 1, 2015 at 01:54 #1219923Hi Moe, I laughed at the thought of trying to get your camera
to catch them, only to find you had a acquired a catalogue of
horses derriere’s.I remember Mister McGoldrick well. I know he was an old Wetherby
favourite, but I remember him most for his win at the festival
in one of the big handicaps at some whopping big price (needless
to say I didn’t have a bean on him). He was a fine horse and I’m
glad to hear he is still enjoying life.I take it from what you say that he is has stayed with the kind
folk at New Beginnings, as he’s been retired a while now.I knew Nanton had been retired, but didn’t know where he had gone
after leaving Jim Goldie’s yard. You brought back some memories
of him too, I had the pleasure of watching him win at Hamilton
(where I live) many years ago, with none other than a young Ryan
Moore on his back. I’d love to say I backed him, but as with Mister
McGoldrick’s festival win, I missed that one too. There seems to
be a theme running here.I’ll keep your admission that you prefer Charlie Hall day to the
Cheltenham Festival under my hat
November 1, 2015 at 16:59 #1219970Many Clouds not going for the Hennessy now; hope he’s ok. What I don’t understand with Cue Card is that trainers are constantly looking down horses throats [aren’t they?]so why was the trapped epiglotis not picked up sooner?
November 1, 2015 at 17:11 #1219971A lot of money came in for CC in the week and it was not misplaced.
Great start to the season
November 2, 2015 at 11:13 #1220120Great to see Cue Card coming back to form, but the one I am taking out of the race has to be Sam Winner. Hindsight is a great thing, so backing him giving 10lbs to the three that finished in front of him probably wasn’t the wisest thing to do.
But, he ran a race full of promise and although normally goes well fresh, certainly looked to me in need of the run, especially when a grinder like he is, faded rather quickly at the business end.
I think he will strip much fitter next time, and if goes for handicap like the Hennessy, or a level weights race, I think he would give them plenty to think about. - AuthorPosts
