Can’t believe that they could have raced today after all that rain we’ve had. I guess it is the one meeting they will try and get on at all costs but it will be a war of attrition and won’t make good viewing.
December 24, 2013 at 19:21 #462894Ilike Gooonyella, the Irish horses often improve for a step up in trip
Mountainous is my 2nd selectionBeware: there’s talk on Twitter that the horse might not make it to Chepstow because of the weather
December 25, 2013 at 13:39 #462904I’d also want to know the jockey before backing it at these prices.
Track trip and ground would seem ideal for Ballyoliver. 13 top 3 finishes in 18 chase starts and resumed last seasons good form in the Badger Ales – might still get a run.
Same applies for Red Rocco and he surely has a top staying chase in him.A very interesting handicap.
December 25, 2013 at 23:28 #462931I’ve been looking out for Ballyoliver getting a run.Mind you, whats the weather forecast like?
December 26, 2013 at 20:12 #463049I like the look of Knock a Hand and Vintage Star. Tempted to have a small ew on Saint Are thinking that he might find a bit of form now he’s going down the weights, although should probably pay more attention to him running on a flat track. Knock a Hand seems to love Chepstow.
December 26, 2013 at 22:32 #463063Anyone heard of Sydney Paget being pulled out of the race, he appears to have disappeared from several bookie’s lists, but no stories on the go. He was my idea of the winner. Any whispers?

He ran today in the Rowland Meyrick and was Pulled Up when well beaten so won’t be going to Chepstow!

Thanks Danny, fortunately I didn’t bet him ante post. I had also liked Tidal Bay, but it’s kind of off putting that only twice in the past 20 years has the winner carried more that 11st.
Not sure what I’ll go for now, I’ll maybe wait till the day and take advantage of the special offers from the bookies, I’m pretty sure they will probably be going 1/4 odds first 5. Well refreshed looked very promising on his last run, but a skinny 7/1 in a slog through the mud with 30 or thereabouts runners doesn’t float my boat.
Best of luck.December 27, 2013 at 12:50 #463087Looks a very difficult race. So i’ll just go sentiment this time round. Small E/W bets on Tidal Bay and Tour Des Champs is more than enough
December 27, 2013 at 20:41 #463131Hawkes Point for me. I’m a sucker for these relatively unexposed horses, especially off 10-00 & with some heavy ground form. They’re often priced up at silly (short) prices, at least this one’s backable at around 12/1.
Working on the principle his first run this season, on this course over 3m, was a sighter for this race, & that he’ll be 100% for today.
Think Teaforthree will also run well again.
December 27, 2013 at 21:21 #463134This looks a cracker. Tidal Bay running adds plenty of intrigue and I think he can go close. The last time he ran in a handicap he was second in the Hennessy off 166 and he runs off 163 tomorrow. That being said, he has to give the bones of two stone to some talented rivals and he’ll need to be at his best.
I’ve long has Goonyella in mind for this race but I don’t think there’s much value in his price at 8/1. He has plenty of stamina and will handle the ground but had a less than ideal trip over and I just don’t feel like 8/1 is a price to be getting involved at.
I’ve gone for Tour Des Champs. He is liable to throw in the odd stinker but has ran on his last three outings. He’s crying out for a proper test of stamina and that’s what he’ll get tomorrow. He’s also handled heavy ground well in the past which is a positive as well as the fact it will increase the emphasis on stamina. I haven’t backed him each way but rather with Paddy Power’s 4-place insurebet offer, where he is 10/1. He’s only 14/1 to win outright so I like this bit of added insurance.
December 27, 2013 at 22:44 #463143Hawkes Point, Vintage Star, Knock a Hand [rush of blood to the head with that one] and Mountainous [Lee has a decent record of getting horses placed in the race, and Richard Johnson is riding Knock a Hand after several changes of jockey over the past few days, and he has a good record at Chepstow]. Although going to look at the race properly tonight and hope I don’t change my mind.
December 28, 2013 at 00:26 #463159I’m with you Moe on Vintage Star. He will love the ground, is in very good form and he will wonder is his jockey has had a leg cut off as he is carrying 10st and you would have to go back 20 months to find him carrying less that 11st. If he can steer clear of the occasional blunder that he throws in he has a cracking shout.
He won well at Carlisle last month, even with a couple of late errors, and maybe could have won last time out later last month at Newcastle if he had been a bit tidier. His jumping is a bit of a risk in a 20 runner decent handicap like this, but I guess that’s why he is 14/1. It’s maybe a bit of a blessing he didn’t get his head in front last time out as he would have been 4lbs worse off for it.
I hung off a bit earlier today when 16/1 was still available, waiting to see if he was pushed out a couple of points, and for my greed I’ve now lost a couple of points, however, I’d settle for that.
If Tidal Bay doesn’t get too disinterested, and too detached, I can see him being a big threat. If he is anywhere near his best, even under top weight, he would give the fingers to the rest as he surges up the straight. I might have a little saver on him too.
December 28, 2013 at 05:42 #463179I will give another chance to Goulanes after his poor run last time. He has some good form from last season and should have no trouble staying the extra distance on heavy going.
December 28, 2013 at 09:45 #463193I like GOULANES a lot
Surprised TEAFORTHREE has been relatively ignored!December 28, 2013 at 11:16 #463225Pleased to see the two Lee horses I’ve backed on TML today and to hear that Knock a Hand had not been himself last season [the reason I backed him was his hurdles form at Chepstow prior to that]. And they’ve both got jockeys on board that have a good strike rate at Chepstow. I know the well fancied horses will take a lot of beating but I was looking for a bit of value [although backing an inexperienced horse that should be a sprinter is taking it a bit too far; still, Red Rum didn’t do too badly and Dessie wasn’t exactly stoutly NH bred]. I did think about a forecast with the two Nicholls horses because the man is so dangerous this year; he’s leaving no stone unturned in his determination in reclaiming his title.
December 28, 2013 at 12:55 #463251Tidal Bay has age and weight too high for my liking. Tea For Three will need to be spot on to win this and that’s a question for me. I am looking for something with scope to improve for the trip and Merry King fits the bill for me. I had him last time and he just missed out on a place but I felt he was staying on that day after a couple of errors. He has looked a potential Grand National type of the future to me and off a decent weight at 11/1 he seems a good each-way to me.
Merry King 10pts each way 11/1
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
