Does it worry you at all that Ralph Beckett doesn’t really have Talent in his thoughts and only has eyes for Secret Gesture?
No, every the eternal optimist I would never let that put me off jpaul I’m certain that Ralph Beckett has Talent very much in his thoughts, in fact in Steve Taplins 2yo’s to follow for 2012 book he rated her as a 4* filly against Secret Gestures 3* at the time and stated that
he was a big fan of this filly, attractive with a good way about her and a bit of strength.
Of Secret Gesture he saidshe was sweet, straightforward and a pleasure to deal with.
She is certainly bred to do the job and would say with Jim Crowley staying loyal and Richard Hughes keen to ride Talent, he is double handed here.Returning to Secret Gesture.. she has actually been beaten by Lady Nouf who was defeated by Talent at Newmarket it remains to be seen which filly has improved the most but my personal opinion is that the value for an each way bet must be with Talent who seems to be improving with every race and if she turns out as she did at Newmarket she might even spring a surprise.
JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...May 29, 2013 at 23:03 #441135That’s a cool bit of info though at Breakfast with the stars Ralph says that SG shows it at home and Talent saves it for the racecourse. The feeling might be that he has an inkling that Secret Gesture is the better filly? Despite the prices and I’d prefer the jockey bookings the other way round – I would prefer to have my fiver on Secret Gesture – she should be in the three not sure you can be sure of that with Talent (perhaps they will have future engagements in mind for her going forwards?)
It’s a much more open race than the Derby though so you can make a case for any of these fillies (they are fillies after all who can under and over perform on any given day). It would be for me disappointing if Secret Gesture can’t win here and then maybe the race at Ascot in October (doubtful she can be an Arc contender at this stage but she might prove to be after Friday??)

I’ve already had my fiver (EW) on Talent at 20/1 and being a great New Approach fan she’s my girl
As you say The Oaks much more open than the Derby where I will be hoping that Dawn Approach will make it a procession and prove that he is a freak of nature, this time defying the talk that he can’t win because he carries the CC gene, I hope he proves them all wrong again.
If you watch a rerun of the race in which Talent beat Lady Nouf she did really well to win it as she ran very free in the first two or three furlongs with her tongue hanging out and then Crowley finally got her balanced and settled and she made her winning challenge, she looks so much like Dawn Approach and have noticed that New Approach is stamping his likeness on most of his progeny, they are a great looking bunch of young colts and fillies. Another filly denied a clear run in that race was
Madam Defarge
who placed 3rd. The ride has been snapped up by Tom Queally and she is currently 25/1 another good each way prospect.
Not long until we know all the answers and The Oaks can always throw up a nice priced winner and to be honest I prefer the fillies race to the Derby.
Funny that Ralph Beckett said that Talent saves it for the racecourse, very similar to a comment made by Jim Bolger about Dawn Approach with his laid back attitude at home.

Moth to win
Talent and Madam Defarge as each way chances.
Can’t back them all and no value in backing both Moth and SG.
Good luck
JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...May 30, 2013 at 10:56 #441165It appears the ground for Friday will be no better than Good to Soft and there is a possibility it could be worse. That should be very good news for The Lark and Madame Defarge. I had already taken the 50/1 The Lark but have had a little more at 33/1 because I see her as being the more straightforward of the two. I doubt there will be any 25/1 left at the end of the day.
Obviously, the ground is only one problem negotiated. The next one is the pace angle. Looking at the runners it is by no means certain who is going to make it, perhaps Gertrude Versed and Banoffee are the most likely candidates. If they don’t go on despite lacking experience one of Liber Nauticus, The Lark and Madame Defarge should seriously be thinking about doing so as I doubt they will win anything without a decent pace. If there is no pace it clearly plays into the hands of Moth. I can’t remember too many Oaks fillies who will have gone to post quickening up to win over 7f in the same season.
May 30, 2013 at 11:09 #441167I liked Secret Gesture’s Lingfield Oaks trial win a lot – she looked very impressive, although, what did she beat ?

Still, she looks the business, and along with Moth, holds all the aces.
I’ll side with the proven stayer at this stage. Secret Gesture for me.

Stoutey’s filly seems a bit one-paced.

I would agree with your thinking and I’d be a bit worried about Moth on the going. She flopped on soft ground in both her starts as a two year old. They started her out over a mile, which would suggest they saw her as a staying type, but after a poor run they dropped her to 6 furlongs. She travelled better that day but the going was heavy and she weakened late on.
After her 7f maiden win on good ground, Aiden said that they had been riding her wrong at two by trying to focus on her stamina and that holding her up and better ground had shown her in a much better light. That would worry me with her going up in trip by half a mile and softish ground to contend with again. She has to be respected with the Guineas 2nd going on to win at the Curragh but I felt the first two in the Guineas were a bit clear of the rest of the field and that Moth came past the non-stayers in the closing stages, such as Winning Express. She was also a bit slowly away at Newmarket and that could cause a problem if repeated at Epsom. I think she is way short at 5/2 when you can get the same odds on a proven stayer in Secret Gesture. You have to give credit to Stoute as a trainer of late developers and expect great improvement from Liber Nauticus. The extra distance will help her show better form but I am not sure Epsom will be her track.
Secret Gesture has won at a similar track to Epsom, she won by 10 lengths that could have been further if desired last time, she goes on the ground, the stable is in form, she has the highest rating of them and she should improve again. The game is all about if’s and maybe’s but if there is a horse in the field who could go out win by a good margin tomorrow it is surely Secret Gesture and I think she represents better value than Dawn Approach at even money given that she has less to prove.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
May 30, 2013 at 16:28 #441196I’m just convinced that Moth will win this. Haven’t been as confident about an Oaks selection since Alexandrova ( who should have run in the Arc )

Given that there is now very little 20’s left can only assume Pricewise has jumped on board?
May 30, 2013 at 20:50 #441216Backed Moth in the Guineas and as theres been one flying around my bedroom for the last 2 days it’s got to be an omen. That’s as good as it gets
May 30, 2013 at 21:41 #441221Secret Gesture for me. Touch of the Ouija Boards…
And before I forget – thank you to TRF poster EGS for bringing this hugely impressive hotpot to my attention. I would never have clocked her otherwise. Thank you. Thank you.
May 31, 2013 at 05:36 #441238Moth reminds me of Homecoming Queen. Aidan O’Brien sent a lesser filly into the 1000 Guineas as fit as he could get her, but Moth was only good enough for third. I think 3-1 is a terrible price for her.
I can’t see past Secret Gesture. People say it was a poor Lingfield Oaks Trial that she won, but Miss You Too has been placed in some very good races. The price is too short for me to get involved with, so I might just have a dabble on Madame Defarge each-way.
May 31, 2013 at 09:54 #441249Another vote for Secret Gesture, she should enjoy the track and ground, trip should also suit, won her trial with any amount in hand.
What’s not to like!?
May 31, 2013 at 10:48 #441257Secret Gesture now 9/4 and the filly that she beat at Lingfield Miss you Too available at around 80/1, there doesn’t seem any value in the favourite when she has been beaten by a filly (Lady Nouf) who was beaten by her stable companion Talent.
The form of the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket is working out so well it points strongly to Moth winning the Oaks with the progressive filly Talent (Pretty Polly winner and Madame Defarge (3rd to Talent) (each way).
It’s a real mixing pot here but Moth and Talent are improving with every race.
Saw Madame Degarge in the paddock for Pretty Polly on Guineas Day, she is a very big filly and was not looking her best that day, bit dull in the coat, but she ran a really good race. One concern for her is will she handle the track? If she does and she turns out looking well today then she will be close and couldn’t wish for a better jockey on board than Tom Queally.
Looking forward to this race more than the Derby and I’m probably wrong but I have a really strong feeling that Talent might even win the Oaks if Moth meets trouble in running

A really strong field and great race ahead.

That’s it for me and JOB. Getting too big now. I thought as much in the Guineas.
Well done to all those who backed Talent !

You are the queen of the classics Triptych. Spare a though for me though. I had Just The Judge 20/1 in the Guineas and Secret Gesture 25/1 for the Oaks and been second both times
Richard Hughes has done the dirty deed on me both times and I made an Open Gesture in his direction afterwards. Still, I reckon Jim Crowley will be way sicker than I am after that one. Can you make it four from four tomorrow? Best of luck.ps Ruler of the World must be a lock for second tomorrow, because I am on the nose at 25/1

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Brilliant Jac – well done!

May 31, 2013 at 15:41 #441300Wow I can’t believe this.
Thanks Steve and Joni you might have heard me shouting her home from 2 furlongs out, what a ride Hughsie gave her. It was that turn of foot that I saw in the Pretty Polly that put her on my short list, she doesn’t look comfortable until she sees daylight and then she flies, what a great result for Ralph Beckett and team and well done to anyone else who backed her, I think it’s the 3rd year in a row now that a 20/1 shot has come home.As for 4/4 Steve that would be being greedy.. wouldn’t it
but just in case Dawn Approach doesn’t oblige I have a couple of little each ways on DA’s half bro Libertarian and Festive Cheer.Going for a sit down now, my heart was going about 100 miles an hour 35 minutes ago
