Well the great Mr Ruby Walsh at least shares my opinion. Personally I think Peddler’s won’t finish in the top 5.
March 6, 2012 at 19:12 #395052Also worth mentioning that he was entered in the Champion Chase.
March 6, 2012 at 19:40 #395058When DM was asked about the reason (why PC might be aimed at the Jewson rather than the Arkle) during his ‘question time’ on betfair on Sunday night the only inofmrative answer he gave was that he thought that the Arkle can sometimes be run too quickly. He also said that the Gold Cup is the long term aim.
Really wish I’d known this earlier! I wouldn’t be overly conifdent on backing PC even in the Jewson based on the events of the last two months.

Think that is a bit of an exaggeration, on the basis that even if he runs a sub standard race there will after to be others who will have to step it up and improve (likes of For Non Stop, Solix) to beat him especially if Sir Des Champs doesn’t run which seems a likely outcome.
Do like the Nicholls runner though.
March 6, 2012 at 20:53 #395069The more i read about him, the more excited i am about seeing Sprinter Sacre next Tuesday!
March 6, 2012 at 21:24 #395071Although I’ve been very much against SS on here and in the Al FEROF camp, I can’t wait to see the horse – he’s a mighty fine specimen indeed – let the best horse on the day win!
March 7, 2012 at 11:24 #395136Anyone know what the exact rules are for the Paddy Power "money back if Sprinter Sacre wins" offer?
They said when I backed Al Ferof and topped up my Peddlers Cross bet "normal ante-post rules apply".
Does that mean as Peddlers has already come out, I lose my money whatever happens in the race, whether Sprinter Sacre wins or not? ie Is the money already lost?
Or, does it mean I still get my Peddlers money back if Sprinter Sacre wins?
Value Is EverythingMarch 7, 2012 at 11:27 #395138Bearing in mind the amount of money he’ll lose if Sprinter Sacre does indeed win, I think you already know the answer deep down, Ginger.
March 7, 2012 at 11:51 #395140From today’s Guardian blog:
Donald McCain has denied running scared of Sprinter Sacre ahead of next week’s Cheltenham Festival and says the decision to bypass Tuesday’s Arkle Chase with Peddlers Cross in favour of the 2½-mile Jewson Chase 48 hours later was taken with a long-term perspective and with the horse’s future in mind.
The switch of races attracted the ire of ante-post punters, with McCain having been apparently adamant only days ago that the Arkle Chase remained the intended target for last year’s Champion Hurdle runner-up.
"At the end of the day, we’ve got to do what we feel is in the best interests of the horse and my owner," McCain told the Guardian’s Cheltenham Festival podcast. "I had a good talk with him, Jason and so on and we just decided for the horse and for his future, [given] where he’s at at the moment after his Kempton run that this is the best way forwards.
"It’s not really a case of him not pleasing. His work’s good, it’s always good. It’s just I felt I’d have been more comfortable if I’d been able to school him more to sharpen him up having made that mistake at Kempton and because of the issues that we had after Kempton I haven’t been able to school him as hard as I want.
"The horse comes first, pure and simple. It didn’t take an awful lot of working out in the end, to be end. It’s not to do with competition, that’s irrelevant. He’s a belting good horse and we’ve never been scared of taking a horse on. But we’re hoping to have him for a number of years, not just one day next week and we’ve got to look after him."
Perhaps they think a serious mistake more likely at Arkle pace and don’t want to risk it. Maybe he’s been making errors at home. They’re obviously nervy and he’s one to leave alone for now, imo, for all his talent.

March 7, 2012 at 13:41 #395175Does that mean if the Jewson didn’t exist, Donald would’ve "done the right thing for the horse", and not run Peddlers at Cheltenham at all?
Pull the other one Donald.

This "doing the right thing for the horse" is a load of xxxx. With a horse’s education in mind, it actually helps for it to go out of its comfort zone. To know what to do under pressure etc. When given too easy a time of it they can get too used to getting there on the bridle.
When it comes to a harder race… Horse says "what are you hitting me with that thing for? I’ve got in front going easily, that’s what I always do. I’ve done my job". Horse finds nothing off the bridle and loses.
It’s called Meade-Carberry disease.

Well said Ginge! Anyone who thinks Donalds ‘yellow’ stripe running down the front of his sweater is part of the pattern is kidding themselves! I could have swore I saw him on the top of the Grandstand stood between 12 white flags blowing in his wind!

They are taking the Jewson very lightly if they think they can get away with mistakes there.
Smacks of the owner deciding to take the easier route ( no shame ) but Trainer remaining bullish, a bit of PR.
There’s no way PC reverses form unless SS falls.
March 7, 2012 at 14:36 #395188I don’t blame Donald and his team for making the decision Gord. In fact, think I’d make the same choice. Just wish he’d come clean. It’s race planners I have a problem with.
Value Is EverythingMarch 7, 2012 at 14:42 #395192If anyone wants to bet each way on the Arkle, they’d better hurry up before final decs. Otherwise it’ll probably be only first two. Asraracad, Cristal Bonus won’t run, possibly not Kid Cassidy too. XXXX knows whether the couple of rank outsiders turn up.
Then again, when it’s NRNB, does it reduce to first two if there’s less than eight anyway even if betting now?

Ginge,I’m retracting my compliment if you think that!
Donald knows his horse very well,he also knows the schedule well too, incredibly he even knows that the Arkle is 2 miles and the Jewson is 21/2m so you would kind of expect a Professional trainer of racehorses to know exactly what tripPeddlers Cross
needs to be competitive! If Nicky Henderson put ‘sprinter’ in the ‘Jewson’ now, you can guarantee ‘Peddlers’ would run in the ‘Arkle’,its blatantly a case of running scared! He wont win the ‘Jewson’ anyway!
