Well, this is a test of me saying Deutschland doesn’t stay well enough – he’s running in the Queen Alexandra on Saturday!
June 17, 2010 at 08:02 #301388Gerald, if you’re anything like me, you’ve pretty much guaranteed that he will stay now. He’ll have my 50p on Saturday anyway.
July 4, 2010 at 16:51 #304644Ballyholland to miss Galway Plate
By Jessica Lamb 3:52PM 4 JUL 2010BALLYHOLLAND will not defend his Galway Plate title at the end of the July, his trainer Colm McBratney has announced.
Cathal McGovern’s nine-year-old stormed to an eight-length success in the €200,000 handicap chase last year and got as far as second Valentine’s [25th fence] in the John Smith’s Grand National at Aintree. However, he returned lame and has failed to recover in time.
McBratney said: "He came home from Aintree with a small swelling in his joint. We thought he’s just banged it and gave him month off. It all went away during that time, but when we started stepping up his work he went lame again.
"It’s a touch of suspensory ligament damage, nothing too serious, but he won’t be running before Christmas."
When he returns to training it will be with a view to attempting to win the 2011 Plate and not the Grand National as McBratney felt that 4m4f is too far for his charge.
July 19, 2010 at 18:48 #307330I suppose everyone already knows that Merigo will be aimed at the Grand National next year, so I’m just posting this to remind myself to regularly visit the Liverpool Daily Post site

Merigo could make next year’s Grand National
Apr 19 2010 by Our Correspondent, Liverpool Daily PostMERIGO is to be aimed at the John Smith’s Grand National following his victory in the Scottish equivalent at Ayr on Saturday.
Connections are hoping the handicapper will raise the Ray Green-owned nine-year-old’s rating high enough for him to make the cut for next year’s Aintree spectacular.
“That will be him done now and we’ll probably leave him a little later coming in next season,” said trainer Andrew Parker.
“What we’ll probably end up doing is run him in a hurdle race either side of Christmas, possibly the Eider and then try to have a tilt at Aintree.
“We’ve got nothing to lose and he should get in the weights now.
“We wanted to try to win a race with him this year before the Aintree weights came out, but the way the weather went, every race we went for was abandoned so we never got up that extra 10lb we wanted to.
“Hopefully yesterday will take care of that now.”
July 23, 2010 at 16:52 #308099Hi Gerald, don’t know if you have this quote but Graham Regan says Niche Market liked Aintree and was along side eventual winner around halfway. I know he’s from Presenting, but Graham says he gets his stamina from his dam side.
July 23, 2010 at 17:40 #308102Thanks Rummy.
I’ve got it now. Grand National blog. Hadn’t visited there since April.
July 29, 2010 at 00:55 #309556Deutschland. Talking through my b@ckside it is then!

October 12, 2010 at 19:44 #322064Hi Gerald, thanks for carrying on my topic of 4 miles sires. I guess by your research that a horse is not entirely controlled by its pedigree.
Anyway over the coming months I’ll have national related articles from my Weekender Paper last week they interviewed Paul Nicholls and he has two horses who looks to be going for it.
NICHE MARKET
Here is what Paul says: " He joined us this year with the express intent of being trained for the Grand National. Already an Irish National winner he was running well at Aintree this year when he struck into himself. Earlier on he had run a blinder to be second in the Aon Chase. He is eligible for graduation chases so we may take in some of those en route to Aintree."
TRICKY TRICKSTER
"Had a bit of a mixed year as he took a while to come to hand, but when he did he won the Aon Chase. As a result we ran him in the Gold Cup which, in hindsight, we shouldn’t have done. His big race target was the Grand National but that was a bit of a non-event as, although he completed the course, the ground was nowhere near soft enough for him to get seriously involved. He is well forward this autumn but we will wait for soft ground. He’ll be given entries in the Hennessy and Welsh National, but Aintree is the big target again."
October 13, 2010 at 20:58 #322265Here’s one I think will develop into a grand national contender. The race itself is not mention in the interview but the trainer is none other than Donald McCain son of Ginger whom trained Red Rum to victory for 3 wins and 2 seconds (plus a scottish national inbetween the 5 years). Then Amberleigh House quite a few years later. So I think this stable will be quite keen on sending a runner.

FABALU
"He is a nice staying handicap chaser. He won twice last season over 3 miles plus on very soft ground and ran well to be sixth in the National Hunt Chase, but the ground was just too fast for him and they were in top gear all the way. I think he could be an Aintree horse and I would like to start him off in the Becher Chase. He would be one for races like the Eider, Welsh National and those valuable long-distance handicaps. "
October 13, 2010 at 22:11 #322278I’ve already mentioned him on a couple of threads on here as a horse to follow this season RR. Early days yet, but hopefully one to follow. My idea of a national horse, and hopefully I’ll be nearer the mark than I was with Deutschland on this thread.

VTC What I’ve put down is merely an interview with the trainer that I think could have some bearing for the national. Since Gerald open this thread on national quotes I thought I should pop it on here.
Well done though for spotting him.
What threads did you put him on if you thought he was a horse to follow.
October 14, 2010 at 09:09 #322310Hey RR, I think they were –
"Second Season Chasers to follow", and "anyone following a dark horse". Something like that anyway. Ha! I also mentioned him him on my first ever post on here (for NH chase at Cheltenham).
Hope you don’t mind me jumping on your post, or think I was being a cheeky ****, I was just glad to see someone else mentioning him.
Was glad to read your post, was keeping my fingers crossed that they’d be going for Bechers, should be a good pointer for him.

No, I don’t mind you voicing your opinions. I think that if it likes the course when it does the bechers chase then it will be targeted at the national. If it gets in the national then it’ll probably be at the bottom end of the weights, because the bechers is not as classy as the national.
I’ve yet to see him run, at least when you noted him you’ve seen him run, all I’ve got to go on is his trainers reports.
Will have a look at your reports to see precisely what you said and when you said it.
October 14, 2010 at 17:48 #322400Jesus “precisely what you said and when you said it”
Are you a little bit mental by any chance? What a bizarre reply.
October 14, 2010 at 19:30 #322417……where is Gerald?
October 14, 2010 at 21:26 #322442Think he said the speed of the forum was driving him nuts; I’m still finding it unbearably slow. Gerald, if you do look in from time to time let us know you’re ok!
