One Cool Cookie is a much better horse going right handed KC. I’d say you’re spot on in suspecting he’ll go to Fairyhouse instead. He’d end up in the Aintree car park if he runs at Liverpool.
January 28, 2009 at 22:25 #10109THE 2009 JOHN SMITH’S GRAND NATIONAL
Class 1, Grade 3, £900,000 total Prize Fund. 4.15pm, Aintree, Saturday, April 4, 2009. For six-year-olds old and upwards which are allotted a rating of 110 or more by the BHA Head of Handicapping following a review of the horses entered and after taking account of races run up to and including February 8, 2009. Horses which are not qualified for a rating in Great Britain or Ireland at January 27, 2009, may also be entered. Such horses may be eligible for a weight providing the Handicapper is satisfied that the horse’s racecourse performances to February 8, 2009, would merit a minimum rating of 110. To qualify horses must have run at least three times in Steeple Chases run under the Rules of Racing of the same Recognised Turf Authority up to and including February 8, 2009. At the Handicapper’s discretion such horses may be allocated a rating. The decision of the BHA Head of Handicapping shall be final. No penalties after publication of the weights. January 28, 2009 at 22:33 #206925thanks for that VF!
January 28, 2009 at 22:43 #206928When you look at their marks, Nicholls could conceivably have all 11 entries in the race. Bad thing or good thing? Personally I think it could be a good thing inasmuch that the other trainers will soon no longer be able to campaign their horses over hurdles as much as they have been. If he comes out and says "I intend running all of them" then some trainers have got a big problem.
January 28, 2009 at 22:48 #206930By the way, a big thank you to everyone who has posted on this thread, it’s been good to read.
Will have to start a "Short Range" thread soon!

January 29, 2009 at 03:47 #206967I think zabenz is an interesting entry, seemed to take well to the fences a couple of years ago before his tack broke, and possibly would have won the betfred if he hadnt nearly fallen at the last. If he comes back from injury as good he could have a good each way chance.
January 29, 2009 at 05:18 #206980Knowhere looks a good e.w bet at 100s thought he was going well last year until coming to grief late on!
January 29, 2009 at 18:53 #207023Zabenz won a point-to-point at Larkhill last weekend beating a good field and winning a whole £250 in the process. Let’s hope he get a run in the National!
January 29, 2009 at 22:09 #207050Thanks for the blurb, Viking – you’ve answered a query I’ve been wondering about for the past few days.
I knew the weights will be published at a press conference on the 10th, but I didn’t know whether racing on the 8th would be taken into consideration, as there are a hell of a lot of GN horses entered in the Hennessy Gold Cup.
Anyway, my 5 figure horse is out, or more correctly, not in.
My 4 figure horses are
Notre Pere
Trabolgan
Air Force One (one of my ridiculous bets on my first night back betting)
State Of Play
Mattock Ranger (some form would be nice, please)
Musica Bella (£2 at 1000 after Irish Stamp mentioned to me that she would stay 4m+ no problem on the 2000 Guineas thread.)I’m adding 3 or 4 more 4 figure horses tomorrow.
After that, I am going to try to forget about the GN, and concentrate on day-to-day racing.
My funniest bet is that I’ve got £2 on King Johns Castle at 90 . . . . for a place!
edit: I’ll write up something for the long-term thoughts thread on Saturday evening.
January 29, 2009 at 22:26 #207056so after all the hype Paul Barber says he’s not happy with the idea of running Denman this year.
January 30, 2009 at 01:07 #207080and if Denman doesn’t run I see he’s entered Eurotrek..images of poor thing entering parade ring with walking stick and several helpers holding him up!
January 30, 2009 at 03:41 #207126Move today for Black Apalachi. Tipped up on a prominent site.
Anyone who thinks Denman is value at 7-1 is bonkers.BA is worth 20-1 ew while it’s still there.
January 30, 2009 at 03:50 #207127so thats why his price came in so much today…still not sure that the trainer wants to run him but having backed him last year I can’t leave him out this time.
January 30, 2009 at 16:49 #207179The big and key question is going to be how does Smith frame the weights. Will he put Denman in on a lower mark or raise the marks of those lower down the list? Could have huge impact especially if he does a mixture of both and Denman doesn’t run.
January 31, 2009 at 01:23 #207260I’ll be drowning my sorrows if Black Apalachi wins this year having done him last year at 100-1. C’est la vie.
