Hope someone can help me with something that’s been bugging me about the 2002 Grand National ever since I’ve seen the replays.
Apart from the sad demise of The Last Fling and Manx Magic, I noticed that at the 4th last where David’s Lad falls, a loose horse also falls and stays down. I’ve tried in vain to find out who that horse and what happened to him.
The best I could find out was that Lyreen Wonder never raced again, but apart from that I’m at a loss.
Anyone any ideas?
July 22, 2011 at 07:55 #365417Wikipedia does not report any other horses to have died following the 2002 race and the RP website does not have the horse as dead….. I know that does not help much but maybe the horse suffered an injury but not a fatal one??
July 22, 2011 at 22:03 #365463I can’t say why Lyreen Wonder didn’t run again, but he did get up from the fall and was taken to Leahurst Veterinary Hospital where X-rays were clear though he was sore.

I was assuming it was him that took the horrible fall when loose at the fourth last as he never ran again, but reading the article I’m not so sure and it looks like it was another horse?

July 26, 2011 at 17:46 #365892I had a look at it on youtube and I think you are right about it being Lyreen Wonder, even though it reads very differently than what happened. There are two loose horses with nosebands but from where he loses the jockey he never passes the other one, and he comes down again when Davids Lad falls. It certainly doesn’t look a nice fall, going over on his neck, but it may well be that he was winded.
