“Appleby has a few nice looking ones, particularly ancient wisdom who looked like he was winning despite the trip being too short last season.”

Dubawi’s don’t win Derbys that’s been the problem for backers of them.

    “Dubawi’s don’t win Derbys”

Neither did the progeny of Sadler’s Wells, until Galileo came along.

“Btw would be great to hear what aidan actually thinks about cot but doubt we ever will.”

If he did tell us, he would have to start preparing to find somewhere else to train from other than Ballydoyle.

“Watch out for a “t” beside CoT’s name in the Derby racecard then I suppose, no time for a wind op”.
    —————————————-

    Quite possible.
Although I seem ton remember they got a lot of adverse comments about AVB at the time… And it didn’t work. Must have hurt AVB’s stud career too. So I doubt they’d use one on COT.

Did seem to give up once headed and he’s (unusually for Coolmore) been a front runner all starts. Maybe one of those horses that just needs to front run.

The thing AOB has said about being his fault not getting the horse fit enough is – in a way – a decoy. The Coolmore brand would rather breeders believed it the trainer’s fault than the horse. However, there is some truth to the “not being fit enough” angle. Not just with City Of Troy. More Ballydoyle horses have been needing their first run than in previous years. Not necessarily the trainer’s fault, there are other elements to such things happening. However, it is still not a big enough reason to explain how far below form COT was.

Interesting the Chester Vase AOB first string today – who has not had a run yet this season – has drifted a lot in the betting. While the second string – who has had a run – shortened dramatically. Although personally think the amount of movement in this case has been too much.

Is it simply a wee something in the yard and when it clears they will be flying like Henderson are now. I think grosvenor square looks a genuine Derby prospect but worried given the trend of aidans horses needing the run. Should have backed agenda at much longer odds. We will find out how the ballydoyle horses are today.

I doubt it’s anything to do with “something in the yard” Mike. Because if it was a virus then those that have already run would be just the same. Whereas at the moment they seem to be improving from first to second start.

The yard is generally in reasonable form, it’s just the first time outers that seem to be struggling.

It was the exact same last year. You couldn’t back them in April/Early May then they were flying from June onwards.
So many of his 2yos are well beaten first time out also before improving like 14lb in only their second outing.

Totally incompetent imo, with those world class facilities at his disposal yet can’t even get them fit for an important race like the Guineas.
I firmly believe he’s training too many and the lads would be better off if they split them between 2 or 3 trainers.
There’s nothing like competition to keep people on their toes.

I would describe 3/23 in the last two weeks – all odds on – as ordinary form for a poor trainer, let alone one who is lauded as a genius.

It wasn’t “the same” last year, GM.
Because it is worse this year.

But of course it is not going to carry on forever. There will come a time when the three year olds will be firing in whether they are first time out or not.

Of the (I believe) 8 AOB horses who’ve run in the UK. The only horse that had already had a run was Portland… And although only 4th in the Sandown Classic Trial @ 9/1, put up a personal best after a below form reappearance in Ireland.

    Of the others:
Three started odds on. Capulet 3rd, Chief Little Rock 2nd and City Of Troy 9th. They were all below their best…
As were 4/1 shot Casper De Limos 6th, Matrika 9/4 in 7th and Cambridge 5/1 in 4th.

Of the 7 first time outers (including three @ odds on) the only one to run what I would call “reasonably Well” was the 5/1 shot Ylang Ylang. Just 1 in 7.

It will improve somewhen, maybe even today. :rose:

    Ginge,

It was bad last year but you’re probably right that it is even worse this year. Chester is the meeting where I’d normally begin betting a lot of Ballydoyle horses but I haven’t had a bet at all today. Watch him make me look like an idiot now lol.

Hmm in the attheraces stable tour a few weeks ago Aidan said Grosvenor Square was very forward and might run in the Ballysax. So either he had a physical holdup that ruled him out of that race and was playing catchup, or didn’t go there because of ground/ pack reshuffling and wasn’t ready to go at all even today and just looked forward on the gallops compared to the unfit stablemates. Or is no good.

Don’t know what to think. Agenda ran well but the fav ran like a drain. Port fairy ran decent and gallantly won cosily. Just very odd from such a usually well drilled organisation. Too many still run well below expected to not be an issue IMHO.

Agenda, Port Fairy and Gallantly had all had a run this season, Mickey.
    Grosvenor Square hadn’t.

AOB reportedly said yesterday Grosvenor Square was ‘ready to start’. I didn’t want to back him today after I read that as it may have implied he would take a step forward from the run, plus you got the drift from evens to 2-1.

Maybe it’s as simple as the 3yos are bit behind but surely he could have kept grosvenor square back for the dante to give him a couple more gallops. Agenda looked fit. Very strange if they are just overdoing the needing the run bit. Highlights maybe that aidan has little say in where the horses run as surely the vase isn’t a race you will get away with an 80% fit horse.
