Shartash beaten less than two lengths in the National Stakes – who was that colt who annihilated him by seven lengths on his previous outing?

    I can’t remember its name.

    Oh, yes –

    Little

    Big

    BEAR!

Not lost faith in Aesop yet. First time on soft ground seemingly not enjoying it.

“Id lose faith if i where you.”

Not yet. I’d like to see what he does again back on good ground where he was impressive the time before and favourite for the Dewhurst as a result.

Trivial fact about the Hofmeister – Follow The Bear adverts:

The first one in the series was the last work ever directed by Orson Welles. His directorial career began with “Citizen Kane” and ended with a man in a bear outfit with a pork pie hat.

Aesop’s Fables has marginally more chance of winning the 2,000 Guineas than I have.

He’s a stone behind a horse in his own yard for a start, even on his best form so far.

Mike, obrien all but confirmed post race hes more likely to come back in trip than step up and this idea that LBB is going to cope easily with the step up to 8f from 6f is also questionable like ive said, theres nothing to suggest hes capable of it, its worth trying sure, there is some stamina on the dam side, looks a pure speed horse to me and if getting there will be very short. Hoping he has another run and shortens into something daft so i can gradually lay him all winter

Id much prefer the beckett horse at this stage over evetything, looks top class at this sort of trip

Unless he means Chaldean and is confusing Ralph Beckett with Andrew Balding?

This is why I don’t like referring to horses as “the so and so horse” – horses have names.

Many years of bitter experience tell me that precocious flying 2yos at 6f seldom end up winning the 2,000 Guineas.

But No Nay Never actually has a stamina index of 7.5f (which surprised me), Little Big Bear is a half brother to winners at 1m2f and 2m (plus over hurdles!), and his dam won in listed company at up to 1m2f110yds.

Though he races prominently, he doesn’t pull hard and the further he went in the Phoenix the further he drew clear.

And the seven lengths third was only beaten two lengths in the National Stakes yesterday.

Plus I’m hoping his setback might help him train on as O’Brien will have had to leave him alone for a bit.

Hope springs eternal when you’re on at 14/1!

As I’ve literally nothing better to do with myself I’ve just done a Mike and listened to an Aidan O’Brien interview after the Phoenix Stakes.

Now while I don’t perhaps treat the words of trainers and jockeys about horses’s capabilities, distance and going requirements with quite the same reverence as TRF’s resident each-way ante-post with cash-out option merchant I’d be a fool not to acknowledge that it’s important to hear from those who decide where a horse is likely to be targetted whether I agree with the reasons why or not.

Regardless of what I think, O’Brien thinks the colt is fast – the National Stakes was subsequently put up as a target rather than the Nunthorpe prior to the setback, but that’s probably coming more from the owners than the trainer.

Having mulled it over, I’ve backed Chaldean at 14/1 with William Hill.

No each-way, no cash-out option – win only.

I’ve got him a whopping 12lb behind Little Big Bear on my numbers, but I think Chaldean (progressive and improving with racing) is a tub-thumping certainty on pedigree to train on and get a mile and the only other 2yo I’ve got higher than him is Gimcrack winner Noble Style and I’m not yet convinced he would get the Guineas trip.
