    History tells me that –

    1. You never know how good a Guineas it is before the race.

    2. You seldom know for sure immediately after it either – all-aged Group 1s await and those tell you how good the cream of the class of any year is.

The first EIGHT in the betting are effectively having their seasonal debuts today and they’re being lauded (or even written off) on what they did at two (over as short as 6f) when they are, in fact, now three, racing over a mile.

    Fascinating race – can’t wait.

I expected the fav to be shorter so I’ve played ,however it doesn’t look a vintage year so I’ve tickled a bigger prices one to , Flight plan has loads to find on form but hails from a yard that been on the up , they had a stellar bunch of 2 years olds last year and while he didn’t look like one of the best in intrigued they’ve put him in here and have tickled him a few times at 50s/66s , this is set a race to have a big price punt at

“You never know how good a Guineas it is before the race.”

Nonsense. Everybody knew that Brigadier Gerard v Mill Reef v My Swallow was a top-class race. Same applies to the 1984 renewal. Everyone saw that Frankel was something out of the ordinary before his demolition job here in 2011. There are many other examples, too.

Although nobody knew that Sea The Stars was gonna turn out to be a superstar. The opposition in that Guineas turned out to be mediocre in hindsight.

Cockney Rebel’s guineas was a poor renewal

This year to me looks wide open and very competitive. Not the worst but not the best, somewhere in-between perhaps?
However you wouldn’t have thought Sea The Stars would go on to to what he did pre his guineas and that’s the beauty of it

They were strung out like in a 4 mile chase on heavy ground in the opening race. I would be worried if I was on anything with stamina doubts.

If the rain keeps falling, I would not be surprised to see a few non runners.

“The opposition in that Guineas turned out to be mediocre in hindsight.”

As was everything else he beat. But that conversation has been had before.

The rain this morning is not helping LBB. With stamina likely to be key, hard to look beyond the favourite now, with Dubai Mile entering e/w calculations.

Everything happens for a reason and I obviously didn’t go to Goodwood today so I could inspire a bit of 52-year aftertiming.

Nice try, Gladders, but CAS’s superb all-time TRF record still remains intact.

I was at Newmarket in 1984 and it did indeed look a quality renewal beforehand on paper.

But it was after it when the protagonists went on to show just how good it really was.

    Ditto 1971.

Time of the first race today was 7.66 sec slow for 1m4f and the winner had an OR of 97 going into the race.

Make of that what you will – it’s might just be a long way home from the Bushes today.

Ill half agree regarding the fav there glad, im not concerned about the ground for chaldean though, but it has to seriously favour the fav, that and the fact he keeps drifting, i couldnt touch him at 13/8 on good, but at 5/2ish on the machine on g/s or worse? Looks a much more appealing bet

Not sure how LBB’s price is holding up after the first race though, he could still be anything and im not disagreeing regarding his talent, just the wrong race for me, but its definitely worth trying

Going to be proper soft ground by off time you’d think

Bad for the sprinters and gd ground horses like silver knott

3.22 seconds slow for 6f from the hitherto OR 98-rated winner there.

Not desperate, but you’re going to have to stay on even better than Gladders and entourage in an electric cab from Ascot to Epsom to get home today.

Update: 3.12 slow for an OR 91 there – no evidence the ground is getting any slower from that contest, unless the wind direction and speed has changed.

I last and only time i won this was in 1995. Been struggling to fancy anything to back but looks like everything is coming right for the FAV now.

Sorry FAV backers but Auguste Rodin for the win it is.

I’ll join Chivers on the tough and likeable Dubai Mile who will cope with the ground and stay, and also have a bit on Galeron – a smallish horse by a cheap sire who was a sprinter, but there is a bit of stamina slightly further back on that side and also on the dam side, and he won a valuable race on ground with ease in it at the end of last season.
    Both ew 4 places.

5.88 slow for 1m1f there and the ground might actually be perfect for Auguste Rodin.

Not desperate enough to give the likes of Dubai Mile a chance, but better than at Doncaster (where he was nearly withdrawn) yet still slow enough to hinder all the 6f merchants trying to last home.

A solid first-four finish, staying on, might in any event make him even shorter for The Derby.
