For sure; was hoping she’d be looking down on him today!
May 2, 2009 at 18:26 #225099The Urban Sea family lives on!
Rip Van Winkle good, but not getting me too enthused in the Derby picture. Evasive very, very brave.
Indeed, very good performance by the winner, and the 2nd and 3rd. Looked a good race to me. Would fancy delegator to reverse form on good ground at 1 mile, and Gan Amhras has run some trial for the derby, however the winner looks to be going places, would love to see him in the eclipse…
Nice one for John Oxx, good trainer and good bloke, has been a bit quite for a few seasons.
Am just glad AOB’s pair didnt do anything, my ttf line would have been screwed…
I still maintain, you can’t call a guineas weak until they are all home and hosed.
May 2, 2009 at 18:41 #225101He’s a very bulky colt, and a tough fighter as well. If he could eventually stay 1m4f (don’t leave it out of the question) he boasts the constitutional/psychological qualities of an Arc contender.
Leaving that aside – I think he’s pretty special. Pity about the name.
May 2, 2009 at 18:44 #225103Interesting to see how he is campaigned Oxx left it until 4yo before stepping up azamour a few seasons back. The 1m2f division looks piss poor at the minute and this STS looks like a horse who could mop up that division from the eclipse onwards.
May 2, 2009 at 18:52 #225104Excellent result, Well done.
Thats the Ten to Follows paid for, Derby ante post paid for, losses to date paid for, Intense Focus not coming paid for, bottles of wine paid for…
May 2, 2009 at 18:58 #225105Well done all who backed Sea The Stars, including Equitrack who backed him ages ago, nice result folks.
May 2, 2009 at 18:59 #225106Well Done Threenaps – it looks like I’ve got a long dark winter following the methodology you outlined to me, so that I am as good as Quantifying the Qualifiable as you.
Gerald
I actually hit the crossbar twice in the same race, as the FSI came 2nd, 3rd & 4th, and I gave a big thumbs up to John Oxx, but I was thinking of Arazan.
May 2, 2009 at 19:14 #225108I reckon the street could hear me giving Mick Kinane encouragement !
The red wine is sliding down a treat now Gerald.
May 2, 2009 at 19:23 #225113Just rewatched the race, look at the difference in action between Delegator and Sea The Stars when the two are side by side. Thats what won it IMO.
Could only fancy delegator to reverse that form on good ground at 1mile (which is unlikely to come up for a while), however Sea The Stars looks to have options galore. Wouldnt like to see him go for the derby but Irish Guineas/ St James Palace/Eclipse/ Irish Champion (and maybe even the King George if he stayed out 1m2f well enough in the eclipse).

That’ll do nicely.
You see, TAPK, that’s how you put up 33/1 winners BEFORE the race. Pop your crown in the post when you get the chance
May 2, 2009 at 19:29 #225117I agree with Bulwark, keep him at 8f until after Royal Ascot and step up to 10f for the Eclipse.

Welll my worst fears were realised and neither of AOB’s were good enough. Mastercraftsman was easy to eliminate and although Rip Van Winkle probably has improved he was beaten fair and square.
At first glance Rip Van Winkle took along time to pick up and was caught flat footed but in the end ran on well suggesting he would be suited by a bit slower pace and further. There was a debate between a few of the guys on here whether he was a sprinter or a mile and a half horse. I think he might prove to be a 10 furlong horse but either way I couldn’t fancy him for the Derby
Perhaps AOB’s are not quite clicking yet and there is better to come but I can’t see it.
I must confess I never even knew the winner was in the race until watching it Even if Ihad I doubt I would have given him a second thought.
I was not a fan of Delegator before the race and that hasn’t changed. He had every chance but he travelled well but when the pressure was turned on he found very little.
The winner always going well picked up at the right time and stayed on really well. However there was nothing that made me sit up and say Wow!
If anything I would say he was workmanlike rather than brilliant.I said before the race I thought this was a fairly ordinary Guineas and I stand by that.
The winner will no doubt run a good race but I really don’t think we saw the Derby winner today and I won’t be rushing out to back anything.
May 2, 2009 at 19:46 #225124A great viewing spectacle but where most of these will go in the season I’m not sure.
I’d be interested in seeing Mastercraftsman reverted to sprinting like Art Coneisseur now if I’m honest. I was watching him for the whole race and he just looked like he was going to pick up around the 6th furlong only to stay on at the same pace to the end. Maybe he prefers softer ground? We shall see.
I’d stick him in the Golden Jubilee and take it from there and see how he goes against the likes of Bushranger (who I really rate for 6f sprints this year).
Rip Van Winkle ran on well and should go to the Derby.
Sea The Stars may be the new Derby favourite but he wont go to Epsom. Why I hear you ask? Mourayan thats why. John Oxx is slowly but surely turning up the heat on this one for the Derby and he runs in the Derrinstown in the coming weeks.
Meehan vs. Oxx Round 2 on the run up to the finish at Epsom anyone?
May 2, 2009 at 20:00 #225127What a suprise, once again gutless Blue Square go 5/2 for Sea The Stars to win the Derby

Not a mission either of those two should go to epsom. Gd-fm looks to be the key to STS but couldnt be too certain he’d see out 1m4f even on gd-fm, let alone good which epsom will probably throw up.
Delegator looks to be holding out for 1 mile on good ground and I’d say he should go for the Poulains next.
The two that should go for the derby IMO are Rip Van Winkle and Gan Amhras, however I have always thought RVW looks more like a 1m2f type. Just hope Gan Amhras stays out 1m4f well enough.
I’m not sure about stepping Mastercraftsman down either, if you look at his action in the final furlong there he wants good ground, and didnt look to be tiring so much as he was just not going as well as the rest (much like the Prix Jean Luc). Poulains aswell for him I say, but Westphalia is already going there so if the irish guineas doesnt throw up good ground then I personally dont think we’ll see much more of Mastercraftsman in the winners enclosure this season.

Same as Ladbrokes. Are they gutless?
