It’s a mini Ryanair Chase at Newton Abbot tomorrow!
Taquin Du Seuil, Black Thunder and Wonderful Charm (11-10) try to give weight to Double Ross (11-6) and Colour Squadron (10-08).
What do you fancy?
October 9, 2014 at 16:15 #491817Seems a fascinating race. Not really looked at the form but possibly back the horse that goes well fresh as none have run for 6 months

Go on say it all 5 go well fresh
October 9, 2014 at 20:35 #491843Taquin Du Seuil is the class of the race but I’d be incline to leave him alone tomorrow as Newton Abbot is a tight track and Taquin is an out and out galloper. Off the top of my head I don’t think he has a great first time out record either.

October 9, 2014 at 20:47 #491845Really fancy Double Ross at the prices. Receiving weight, small field, point him and go!
October 9, 2014 at 20:48 #491846I think I’ll leave
Taquin
alone too, Nathan. I don’t see how he’s a grinder though – he is one of the few horses to have displayed enough pace to get My Tent Or Yours off the bridle at two miles. He travelled better than anything in the Jewson until McCoy realised they’d given Uxizandre too much rope, too.
I don’t like the Nicholls pair as his early runners have generally seemed a long way short of full fitness.
Black Thunder
and
Wonderful Charm
probably lack a touch of pace in this company anyway. Hennessy preps for them perhaps?
That leaves the two receiving weight –
Double Ross
and
Colour Squadron
. I’ve got a big soft spot for Colour Squadron and think he is nowhere near as quirky as his reputation makes out. He was placed in all of the big 20 furlong handicaps last season and only lost to class acts like Module and Fago before that! CS gave Double Ross nearly a stone and only lost to him by 5 lengths in the Stewart Family Gold Cup, now GETS almost a stone from the chestnut.
McCoy riding at 10-08 after a horse walked all over his ribs today will tell you a tale too. Likewise, the fact that Uxizandre was in the 5 day decs and misses out in favour of Colour Squadron…
Double Ross improved all the way through last season, but will need to find even more to repel Colour Squadron on these terms if both are near their best. Nigel Twiston-Davies has also had a few big names running below par recently (Ballyboley, Splash Of Ginge, Goodbye Dancer). Given Twister’s prowess in getting his horses to win first time up, Double Ross has a pretty poor record fresh too.
Colour Squadron for me. 7/4’s not great but will have to do!
October 9, 2014 at 20:58 #491848What I mean with Taquin Du Seuil is he likes to go a good gallop in the sense of he likes a decent pace and tomorrows race should be a slower run affair compared to a Cheltenham festival.

October 10, 2014 at 05:49 #491855The conditions of this race could have been framed for Colour Squadron.
There’s not much between him and TDS on ORs but with the penalties the others have to carry plus the 6lb concession he gets for still being a maiden over fences if he can’t win today then he’s in for another disappointing season, given he should be 3 from 3 first time out (won his bumper in 2011, unlucky 2nd when saddle slipped in 2012 and again when badly hampered 2 out in the 2013 Paddy Power)
Bet Victor a current standout 15/8 but I have a feeling he may drift if McCoy sits it out as is looking likely.

October 10, 2014 at 07:15 #491858Taquin 2/2 FTO NH, and won on flat debut so certainly goes well fresh.
CS beaten last 12 starts, 2/15 overall. Very consistent but surely a bit of a dog?
October 10, 2014 at 07:49 #491859I think he’s been unlucky more than anything.
But while Jonjo, Twister & Nicholls would be happy with just a decent performance surely Hobbs knows that if Colour Squadron is to have any chance of picking up prizes this year then he has to start today in receipt of a stone plus, with the exception of Double Ross.
Wouldn’t be a cause for concern if any of the other 4 finished a gallant second giving the weight away but roles reversed and where does Colour Squadron go next considering he’ll always be at the head of the weights in handicaps and doesn’t look like he’d have either the speed or stamina for a move down/up in trip.
Friendless in the market though but is that the McCoy factor ?

October 10, 2014 at 08:34 #491860If I was having a bet I would probably go for the best horse in the race TDS although DR would be tempting at the price. Would be interesting to see which horse AP would go for if he had the choice between TDS & CS. By the way is he getting soft in his old age

, I was going from the top of my head and thought he hadn’t, sorry. Don’t think he beat anything of the calibre he’ll be facing today though first time out and with the weight on his back would still avoid today, but good luck if playing.Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
October 10, 2014 at 10:32 #491866Although he’s now been ruled out does anybody know the last time McCoy did 10st 8lb ?
It certainly wasn’t in the past 14 days and maybe he could have got off Colour Squadron to ride TDS if he’d wanted too – in light of the weight.
October 10, 2014 at 10:52 #491868Colour Squadron isn’t as bad of a dog as his reputation suggests. He’s not a simple ride, but does buckle down and had the guts to place in pretty much ALL of the top 2m 4f races last season. He would have nutted John’s Spirit with a few more strides in the Paddy Power.
Possible bad news for Colour Squadron backers is that the ground is now officially soft. He was second in the Tolworth and beat Montbazon as a young hurdler on soft, but has generally posted his lesser efforts as a chaser in these conditions.
October 10, 2014 at 10:54 #491869I think AP could quite easily do 10-8. Think he struggles with the low 10s and may need half an hour in the sauna for 10-1/10-2. Unless the middle aged spread is catching up with him
October 10, 2014 at 11:00 #491870Sorry TYF but I have to disagree there.
If he gets beat it’ll be because he isn’t good enough and not because of the ground.
He’s proved himself to be a soft ground horse on numerous occasions with his worst effort to date coming in the Supreme on good ground with closing RP comments of "He wants softer ground".

October 10, 2014 at 11:12 #491871According to the RP, McCoy’s lowest riding weight in the past year is 10-04.
A really good race for this stage of the season, one to watch for me although if I had to pick one I’d go with Wonderful Charm at 6/1. He has gone well at this time of year in the past and seems like he’s at his best in the autumn.
October 10, 2014 at 11:27 #491874So that’s 4 of the horses covered. Black Thunder is the winner then
