Why?
Surely the priorities for increased prize money are listed and group 3 races on the flat and just about everything over jumps.
And does any race need to be worth a million.

April 5, 2018 at 18:55 #1349169Presumably it would be to foster a PR narrative whereby a small owner/syndicate is able to land a big prize although in practice, it will just encourage the larger operations to keep a lid on a few of their Group 3 and late developing types before aiming them at these races.
April 5, 2018 at 21:10 #1349178Hmmmm. Ballydoyle to target the age-old St Leger- Cesarewitch double with a Derby also-ran, perhaps?
April 5, 2018 at 22:44 #1349182Both races have maximum fields every year and with the Ces having a maximum rating of 110 it’s not like they are hoping that the best stayers will now head to Newmarket in october.
Headline grabbing nonsense.
April 5, 2018 at 23:26 #1349183The more prize money for our big races the better. British flat racing has to compete on an international stage, and too often falls back on the ‘prestige’ argument to make up for its financial shortcomings relative to other leading racing nations.
April 7, 2018 at 12:06 #1349356With more prize money for these staying Flat races, there’s even less reason/ incentive to send a horse over hurdles.
I’d actually like to see an incentive for more dual purpose horses; winning races at both Cheltenham and Royal Ascot, or winning Ascot Gold Cup – Champion/ Stayers Hurdle….., etcApril 7, 2018 at 12:52 #1349368The rich get richer – flat racing
The poor get poorer – jumpsAlso wasn’t there to supposed to be a huge boost in prize money to grass roots racing (as a result of the new Tote agreement for 2018?) I haven’t seen it so far
April 8, 2018 at 17:28 #1349455That suggestion about an incentive for a C’ham/Royal Ascot double is fascinating. It would have been amazing to see Faugheen or Annie Power in the Ascot Gold Cup. Other lesser Mullins horses, like Simenon + wicklow Brave have been very competitive in Group staying races
