I had to feel sorry for Atle Lie McGrath yesterday. He was in prime position to win the slalom but it all went wrong.
A cruel blow for the lad, on top of losing his grandfather last week. The classless Swiss coach celebrating his misfortune right under his nose wouldn’t have helped his mood either.
But his reaction, throwing his ski poles over the fence, taking off his skis and then stomping off through the snow to the woods was brilliant. It showed he cared.
I would have awarded him a gold medal just for that.
