No blame on Nico for what happened – it was a case of the two jockeys playing silly buggers with each other, Harry had more need to get a lead than Nico did given what happened at Newcastle but also I can understand that Nico was not wanting to let SG stride on a give Harry a lead/target to aim at.
Hindsight is a great thing but had Nico let SG stride on at a more sensible gallop and thus let Harry stalk him, that stronger pace would have suited TNL because he stays further and tactically needs a proper gallop at 2m rather than a slow/sprint race.
Given the way the race panned out Nico would have had too much speed for TNL who still got caught flat footed after the last by two inferior horses and only at the line as his stamina kicked in was he drawing away from the other two.
There is also no evidence to presume that had Nico simply got on with the job instead that the injury wouldn’t have happened, he could have still met a hurdle wrong and still made the same mistake that caused the injury.
It is just an extremely unfortunate accident that you can’t legislate for.
