Decided to have a cheeky bet yesterday (Sunday) and when I saw the Irish racing I thought I’d found a sure winner, famous last words across the sea ey! In the first at Gowran Park Aiden O’Brien had a 2yo in a maiden by the name of Sir Edwin Landseer at 4/6. Having been backed in during the course of the night and morning it looked like one of those Aiden improvers that hoses up, 3rd on debut and a winner in the making.
Race goes off, Edwin gets a prominent position and is cruising, travelling just like you’d want. 2f out and mine hits the front, here we go, just ride it out to the line to ensure the jobs done, we get little bit of a scare from the 2nd favourite but mine gets the better of him and steadily asserts, 100 yards left and I’m counting my money.
But oh wait, what’s that, what’s this horse flying down the inside in the other Aiden O Brien silks? Is it Aiden’s 2nd string? Hmm no it can’t be as I recall noticing that there was no 2nd string in the race. Is it a figment of my imagination, teasing me? No, it’s definitely a real horse and definitely about to overtake mine. Maybe it’ll slow down as now that it’s come face to face with my beast? No, it doesn’t, it gets quicker and beats mine into 2nd, ah well probably the 3rd favourite or something, fair play was my initial judgement.
I scroll down to the racecard to see who I’ve been done by, it’s a newcomer by the name of Intricately and went off at 33/1……..and who was the trainer? Our favourite ex-jockey Joseph O’Brien.
Not so fair game, I mumbled to myself as I closed the laptop screen, enough to put me off gambling for at least 24 hours
