Aside from corporates and the filthy rich, the course just wants as many fake-tanned scouse slappers and their chav boyfriends through the gates as they can get. Wouldn’t go near the place these days – although I’m sure that’s of no great concern to those in charge.
How did New England, Listillo and Adage get on?
Why is this event being discussed under the ‘big races’ label? Sadly, it’s become an irrelevance and no amount of boosting the prize money will change that situation.
And it surprises me that any thinking punter should choose to pay any attention to the poppycock spouted by the king of retro-fit, Nick Mordin.
A laughable assertion in his recent Weekender article on speed ratings –
‘Do not adjust for wind – it really only significantly affects times at Newmarket’.
Together with amazing feats that defy the laws of physics, I do wonder if Mordin-World is populated by 3-legged chickens, 2-headed dogs and bearded ladies.
Overall a pleasing result, given the way that the first test has been going.

Of the horses mentioned, didn’t Even Melody race until a fairly ripe old age, 13 or 14?
As a youngster, I saw the Mackeson Gold Cup the year that it was run at Haydock. Cancello (I think) won. Also in the field were Bula and (again I think) Red Rum.
Without sectional timing to educate trainers and jockeys in UK and Ireland
The golden fleece of sectional timing. We still have the situation, though, where some clerks of the course are unable to tell us how much their rail movements impact on race distances.
I really do hope that Setanta fold and wish that they hadn’t stuck their noses into TV sports coverage in the first place!
it’s proven itself hundreds of times over as the most complete test.
You could have added ‘in the past’, the word past being most significant. The odd exception apart, the race is surely becoming an irrelevance in the modern racing programme, along with the Eclipse and the Diamond Stakes. That the Derby struggles to attract a sponsor speaks volumes about the race, if not the sport itself.
Alongside the apparent lack of quotes, the ‘full’ meeting information that contained details of dolling off / rail movement also now seems to be missing.
How much market research is undertaken before these ‘improvements’ are made?
