2:30 – Arab race, used to pay a slight bit of notice towards these as bookies were often guessing. Not done so this season.

3:05 – Well Of Wisdom (3/1, SkyBet), hasn’t really kicked on for his listed win at Longchamp on June. Really like the 2nd he beat on that occasion and willing to chance him here as the Godolphin first string. Certainly not sold on many of these, Hamama the most interesting alternative but will probably come far too late.

3:40 – Bleu Marine (EW 20/1, Coral), I don’t follow the French form that closely but looking back through RPR’s of horses he’s beaten a mark of 90 looks no hindrance. Remarkably consistent in that country and starts out for a new yard here. Couldn’t have Star Safari at all on our limited evidence so far.

Also 3:40 – Franz Kafka (9/2, SkyBet), back on turf here and it was an absolute romp in January. Race probably wasn’t too strong but would like him on the pick of his British form anyway.

4:15 – Behavioral Bias (5/1, Coral), only his 3rd handicap start since coming to the UAE having been campaigned mostly in Grade 3 races. This looks pretty weak with no Midnight Sands to contend with this time. Not sure there’s much pace on, which might count against him, but they could try more prominent tactics regardless today.

4:50 – Fascinating race but no bet for me. Wouldn’t put anybody off a Spanish Mission/Dubhe forecast of some description though.

5:25 – Assimilation (16/1, SkyBet), step up in trip poses a question but also an opportunity. He’s had too much to do over a mile recently. Suspect this will stretch him though but his 5th place from 2 starts back has worked out well and I like the horse (The Gill Brothers) he beat at Chelmsford.

6:00 – Dubai Icon (8/1 SkyBet), American Graffiti is a horse I like but can’t have him at these prices. Dubai Icon ran a fabulous race last time in a race that ought to work out strongly (2nd Red Cactus runs in the 5:25, but that’s on dirt so didn’t go for him). He looked pretty exciting in GB last year and would be surprised if isn’t better than 94 (although being a Godolphin horse he’ll probably get injured before reaching his full potential).

6:35 – Velorum (9/2 William Hill), huge fan of this horse. Clearly wasn’t himself at Ascot and there’s a risk he’ll need this. Can’t see On The Warpath conceding 13lbs to him and winning if he’s on song. Think Zainhom is a nice eachway proposition as well, but he’s had a busy campaign already.

    3:05 – Well Of Wisdom (3/1)
    3:40 – Bleu Marine E/W (20/1)
    3:40 – Franz Kafka (9/2)
    4:15 – Behavioral Bias (5/1)
    5:25 – Assimilation (16/1)
    6:00 – Dubai Icon (8/1) NAP
    6:35 – Velorum (9/2)

Taken 20/1 (SkyBet) about Mazzini in the 4:50. Really liked him last season, and price more than compensates for fitness concerns now.

Agree with Gingertipster here, the term “non-trier” gets bandied about with far too little nuance.

Step Back wasn’t entered here (just as well given his jumping last year).

That should have made my shortlist much more open than last time but it appears I’ve settled on one horse already.

Now McGinty strikes me as a mad price at 100s (I’ve whacked a couple quid on at crazier prices on the exchanges). His run in the Welsh National really disappointed me travelling quite poorly. His comeback run was superb though pushing a 90% fit Santini pretty close. I’m not taking that form literally at all, but neither is the handicapper and he’s off 147. Not guaranteed to get a run, but imagine he does (58th in the pecking order and presumably not all of the Irish entries will go here rather than Fairyhouse). He had good form as a novice chaser too, most notably when beating De Rasher Counter at Chepstow. Obviously he has negatives, but nothing that would concern me at these odds.

2nd most appealing (but would have no clue whether he goes here yet) would be Champagne Classic. Could easily have a tough race at Cheltenham though which would be off-putting so can’t play him yet. Suspect a mark of 152 ought to be manageable.

Oddly, don’t like the look of any of the market principals. Kimberlite Candy maybe? Nothing really grabbing my eye currently.

Only 3 outstanding bets for me, but should add a raft of Cheltenham selections a week or 2 before the meeting.

For now though, 1 pick will have to suffice.

    Grand National – Now McGinty (1pt EW @ 100/1, Bet365)

One of my favourite horses of all time, felt sick yesterday after the incident. Was really looking forward to seeing him as a sire and just so tragic.

Every meeting bar Newcastle and Gowran currently has an inspection scheduled for tomorrow morning. Bare that in mind when thinking of reserves and the like.
