I’ m not saying he is not knowledgeable Cormack, he does know his stuff.
I do like the Irish, but its that accent. I want to hear English and not your posh London type. IMO think it would improve the programme.January 26, 2015 at 21:32 in reply to: Channel 4 ‘in denial’ suggests former racing coverage boss #503110For the second largest spectator sport in this country, it should be relatively easy to put together a programme to compliment the action. In fact the current formats are probably driving people away from the sport.
Like many programmes on TV, those that were first shown on BBC and moved over to other channels failed. The exception was Clare Balding on BBC racing where the chemistry there just didn’t work, even with her trainer brother connections.
There are too many things wrong with C4 racing (some now past but haven’t helped) and here’s a few.
Clare Balding, left a legacy of decline both on BBC and C4.
Rishi P, as above.
Mick Fitzgerald – should present in Ireland.
Interviews, interviews, interviews.
It’s now boring.
Less people who are too word perfect and appear to be from the city.
Richard Hoiles – boring and doesn’t take a breath.
Nick LuckNeeds
Characters, characters – that’s why the previous programme pre CB and RP worked.
Humour.
Tommo
Mike CattermoleThere are less needs than the things wrong as it wouldn’t take too much to make a decent programme which was entertaining and watchable.
It needs someone with a different vision to produce the programme and take if forward.Just Rishi to go now, a couple of new faces with the right chemistry who just blend in to make the horses the most important thing, and the programme might start to gain more viewers.
August 24, 2014 at 09:48 in reply to: Big blow for Channel 4 Racing as Derby only pulls in 1.5m #489126Recorded the racing yesterday and quite happy fast forwarding just to watch the races.
Still haven’t changed my mind that Clare and Rishi shouldn’t present horse racing. They just don’t blend into the programme and the horses should take centre stage.July 6, 2014 at 12:47 in reply to: Big blow for Channel 4 Racing as Derby only pulls in 1.5m #484889Then what will you lot complain about?
I moan because I want the coverage to be so much better and how it used to be in the best days of Alastair Down, John Francome and Big Mac. Hearing Alastair enthuse about jumps racing especially at Cheltenham made me feel part of the sport. I was entertained but with the new team I am bored
Quite agree. The sport deserves better coverage. The names you quote Phil had character and the chemistry with the coverage worked with them. While the presenters now are very eloquent, they also quickly become boring.
Derek Thomson as anchor
Big Mac doing the betting
Francome/McGrath doing the paddock & post race analysis
Cattermole doing the interviewsThat would be enough for me, simplify it and get back to basics as C4 Racing once was. I don’t think the likes of Balding, Persaud, Fitzgerald etc add one iota to the programme or presentation.
Totally 100% agree with this post. If it wasn’t broke before, don’t fix it.
June 22, 2014 at 22:01 in reply to: Big blow for Channel 4 Racing as Derby only pulls in 1.5m #483728Someone like Derek Hobson should lead the programme
Derek Hobson presenting – `New Faces` – how appropriate that would be, preferably with Tony Hatch giving an assessment of another clueless ride from Dettori or Spencer.
Haha, where did Hobson come from. Showing my age.
Meant Thomo, of course.June 22, 2014 at 18:50 in reply to: Big blow for Channel 4 Racing as Derby only pulls in 1.5m #483701Racing’s a minority sport. Channel 4 is a minority channel.
According it this, Horse Racing is GB’s 2nd largest spectator sport.
June 22, 2014 at 13:50 in reply to: Big blow for Channel 4 Racing as Derby only pulls in 1.5m #483672Said most of this before but the programme chiefs need to look at the chemistry of how everything fits in with racing.
As in the days when Clare and Rishi were on the BBC, it’s all about the interviews, the presentation skills etc.
You need more characters on the programme, not just those who communicate very well, it’s more than that.
Someone like Derek Hobson should lead the programme with Clare chipping in only very occasionally.
Mick Fitzgerald is too Oirish for the programme, okay if the programme comes from Leopardstown etc, but it doesn’t work well over here.
Mac should come back. Francome’s a miss.
The programme needs more earthy people on it, not just those who have a London city accent.
Of the programme, horses should feature the most, then the people.Too many on there that look and sound like they work in the city. Programme needs people with more character than that hence why the chemistry with Francome, Tommo and McCrirck worked.
Just seen Rishi interviewing golfers on BBC2. All for people getting on but with Clare popping up here there and everywhere as well, can’t yet put my finger on it but getting tiresome seeing these same faces.Bring back everything as it was, where possible making very careful changes to role casting in areas that can’t be replaced. The old blueprint worked. The chemistry (because there isn’t any), doesn’t work now.
Grand National figures down as well
http://www.racingpost.com/news/live.sd? … category=0Various posts and threads trying to evaluate and suggest the non appeal.
Today I was thinking Nick Luck, Clare and Rishi, they all look and sound like they should work in the city and the chemistry just isn’t there with the racing.
People like Francome, Tommo, even McCririck all with personalities and sounded more natural for the programme. As well as Red Rum/Crisp
Has to be the voice of Peter O’Sullivan
"And as they come to the last fence in the National".
"He’s gonna get up, Red Rum is going to win the National".Also when the commentators switch and the coverage of the 5 fences leading to Beecher’s with the distinctive bank on the far side.
Also miss the Grand National coverage and build up on BBC 1 pre Clare and Rishi.
Good thread. Just want to expand a bit and say things to get rid of to improve.
Rishi
Mick
Tanya (unless she plays second fiddle to someone)
**** intro music
Too much interviewing
Programme being too clinical. Bring some characters in rather than all being "too perfect"and scripted. My father and sister went to see Sharron a few years back through her friend Anne from Halifax and said what a lovely person.
Saw in John Francome’s Sun column yesterday she had had a heart attack on Tuesday.
RIP Sharron. What about people like Tanya and Rishi, who clearly possess neither?
Have to disagree about Rishi. Presenting skills are high but he is wrong for racing. With racing commentators you need something a bit different, Tommo, Francome etc. Clare Balding is a good presenter, but again like Rishi just doesn’t have the chemistry for this programme. The pairing didn’t work well on the BBC and has carried on in the same vein on C4.
With Tanya, did work okay when she played number 2 to McCririck as he was the main man with a bit of character.
The programme just isn’t interesting anymore and C4 seem to think having good clinical presenters delivering a load of facts is the main component of the programme.
How they are wrong, and viewing figures tell their own story.Annoying for my family but on the day I often repeat "as they come to the last fence in the national" in a Peter O’Sullivan voice.
Growing up, national day was magical and have never lost that feeling though Clare Balding and Rishi are knocking this out of me.
I still get the lump in the throat listening to O’Sullivan on YouTube and especially around Red Rum’s era. -
