Totally expected this to happen. It’s all about him. Hands up never been a fan of his. Makes his farewell tour and things like his cash demands to appear at Listowel (rightly declined by the course) all look very hollow and attention seeking in my opinion.
Worst fall and aftermath I have ever seen. Horrendous and sickening viewing. Can only hope it was instant and the poor house knew nothing.
Always liked Geespot, Sire Pursuit of Love, Dam My Discovery
Yes I would think that it is South Lanarkshire Council’s responsibility as the rest of the land has signs on it with Council headings. I would think they probably would like to get rid of the cost of maintaining the building in the current climate.
Yes, the approximate odds board building at Lanark is still standing, it is a right mess but I believe is listed so unable to be removed. An image is available on the Wikipedia page for the track.

I always thought that if the desire to have an all weather track in Scotland was there, Lanark would be an ideal place, assuming cost was not an issue of course
Glad he had a long and happy retirement. Was no superstar but one of my favourite horses of all time.
Lanark is another which is readily visible and indeed a pleasant walk on a dry day.
I remember when David Chapman was chasing the record for number of wins in a season with Chaplins Club in the mid 1980’s he declared the horse for two races at I think Ayr on the same day with the stated intention to run if record was achievable. There was a bit of discussion at the time as to whether this was unfair on the horse, but from memory the horse was declared a non runner in both as the horse ran the night before.
Disagree there. Commentary is a specialised role, taking years of practice to get to even a competent level, far less the top of the tree. I do not believe any of us are in a place to criticise a small mistake until we have experienced the pressures of the job for ourselves, and not many of us could do it.
How many of us could do Jerry Hannon’s job? Probably very few would get anywhere close to an absolute minimum standard to be heard in public. Criticism here is grossly unfair, the incident happened at the close of a race which looked to be in safe keeping, but suddenly was transformed by a tragic incident.
In those circumstances the commentator has to react immediately and that would cause the raise in tone. Ballycairn is leading and Limestone Rock closing so that needs to be reflected, watched and broadcast. Hannon then when the race is over turns his attention to the earlier incident and probably should have double checked that not only was Reality Cheque up but also ok. Completely understandable that in a high charged moment a slip was made.
Are we really saying that Jerry Hannon is not an improvement on his predecessor?
Much more importantly, sympathies to all connected with Reality Cheque, a horse that looked to have an excellent future.
Each to their own opinion of course, but I do find the quite strong criticism of Richard Hoiles throughout this thread surprising. I find his commentaries to be accurate, informative and he rarely misses a fast finisher or suchlike. Find he also doesn’t have repetitive stock phrases which get churned out race after race. I would rather have RH than some of the alternatives.
Saddest news ever on this page, absolute legend of a horse. Gutted.
Apologies, I thought I had quoted Dragut’s post in my reply, apparently I didn’t!
Just to be clear I was not suggesting Tonge’s original post was dramatic, but that Dragut’s was a tad sensationalist.Or it could all just be a dreadful coincidence with no blame attached to the course. Don’t think there is any need for such a dramatic post. Jockeys reported the going to be perfect at Musselburgh on Monday, and one of the fatalities (Smart Ruler) was certainly down to what looked like a heart attack with no injury to the horse. Can’t see anything coming out of this at all except rotten luck on the course’s part
The cost of £5.25ish for us bookies (I am a Ladbrokes manager) is the tabloid paper, the RP display paper that goes on the wall and I think the cost of delivery from our couriers Citipost all rolled into one. Good thing is, the shop tabloid edition now has its own banner, so if you see someone with one you know they have pinched it
Absolute speculation, horses drop dead in cold weather too. Until the results of the post mortem are available then I think we should reserve judgement on anything and everything.
+1 Memorials threads are becoming un-readable. In my opinion they should simply be about the horse and its demise, the main racing forum could be used for any further discussion re the merits of the retraining of racehorses.
