Two bridesmaids spring to mind here.
Firstly, I’ll nominate Youmzain. Third in three consecutive arcs, finishing behind Dylan Thomas, Zarkava and Sea the Stars respectively.
If it hadn’t been for three of the best horses of the modern era, I think we’d be referring to him as one of the greats.
Secondly, a horse who probably hasn’t been campaigned quite as precisely as Youmzain: Red Cadeaux.
Finishing second in 3 Melbourne cups is quite something. The horse is obviously very uncomplicated and travels really well.
He only found St Nic too good at Epsom, and Animal Kingdom proved a bit too quick at Meydan.
He’s never really landed a ‘big one’, unless you’d argue that the HK vase was that, but they’ve seemed to always gear him towards a tilt at the Melbourne Cup. I just hope that they’ll retire him at a sensible time, while he’s still sound.
I know he makes his owners a lot of money but to see him die on the track would be tragic.
Gold Cup 2015
Sam Winner @33/1
1pt e/w
Faugheen 2pts Win
@5/4
Got the package – Thanks!
Unfortunately I didn’t actually go through with any forecast bet.
Had a decent single on SC, a horse I’ve never had any real confidence backing, though. I think today was a case of being the only true stayer in the field, although he’s definitely much improved from last season.
1. Silvianaco Conti
2. Dynaste
3. Al FerofRich Ricci calls the shots. There’s no way I can see him being happy about another owner’s horse going for the Arkle, so I think of the two Mullins horses Vautour is by far the most likely to turn up.
I personally thought Spencer’s effort was a bit tame – constantly twitching and adjusting himself during the race. He looked nervous to me and I think the horse may have picked up on it. Also, I only counted 5 whip strikes from spencer in the straight. The winner received 7.
Kings Palace
Murtagh every day for me. Also a fan of Gerald Mosse when he comes over
