Molehorse I believe that the FOBT need to be made illegal. And exchanges pay a percentage to the independent racing industry. to run a book. I will drive the price down, but personally I can handle that if it means insuring the future of racing.

Another question that arises is, would racing be in a similar position had exchanges never been allowed? Obviously the exchanges contribute but it is no where near enough. A non profit organization (the new tote) would win the hearts and minds of everyone in racing, (exception of bet fair and bookies) and instantly put money back into racing. If the hypothetically proposed tote took 100% of bets on all UK horse racing, a free TV channel would affordable. That would see a massive rise in numbers.

If every day any one can get full coverage free, that would in effect pay for its self. What does Joe Bloggs do when they watch the racing , place a bet! Ring the tote!

There is a free Racing Post TV now on sky, no cost! It’s for the dogs, but why not for the horses?

I didn’t know you can export such a big sample, i tried to every trainer in cats A-D but RI kept saying "overflow" and crashing. Do i need to do something different for big samples?

Well Miss Woodford everything in America is allot better organised and funded. We can’t even afford to pay the winners any more, or have a few extra clocks for fractional s. At the same time the tree hugers are trying to put a negative spin on the nations favourite race once again. Having out riders is a good idea, but thinking way out side the box for British Racing.

Certainly something to make FOBT and online gaming illegal, would steer the money towards racing. It’s a long shot, but there are a number of wealthy and powerful people involved with racing that can influence the future for racing, and hopefully they can get together for the greater good of British Horse-racing.

Ok Irish Stamp, i’ll have a go, but not promising anything.

    a) Presumably the Tote monopoly will come when the bookies leave racing as there’s no custom there, how does racing get people to bet on a product bet to a ridiculous percentage (AKA Tote takeout) when they can bet on a football match bet to 101.5%?

Well in an ideal world the newly proposed tote system will take over before it is all to late. Book percentages will not deter Joe Bloggs punter form horse racing. Is what will deter Joe Bloggs is a lack of exposure / coverage. If hypothetically racing was free and available to all in their homes this would generate a much larger following, much like the good old days before the racing channels. This could only work if the Racing channel / New Tote / and race courses were working as on entity or company.

Standard Punters do not see 125% book all they see are the odds. Odds on on Man United or 8/1 in the 19:40 @ Wolvs? That’s the financial betting decision most punters are faced with, they do not see true odds weighed up against odds.

    b) Shouldn’t racing focus on getting the product in order ie. being able to enforce lifetime bans on anyone found guilty of corruption rather than letting them back into the sport 6 months later?

I think this is a different subject all together.

    c) Why would Joe Public bet on a sport that relies on deceptive tactics, exploitation of the rules and has an active press that won’t say a word about this?

Do you mean form? Joe Public would disregard the complications if the coverage was readily available.

    d) Unless any Tote monopoly is set up to go "live" as soon as the bookmakers leave racing there will be a period when there is virtually no prize money (prize money coming from the levy which is largely bookmaker funded or from the image rights which are paid to racecourses from the levy). How does racing survive during this period assuming that the owners/trainers are correct in telling us that they are all really struggling in the current climate of £1,600+ prize money?

This will be very difficult i think to survive, which is why something must be done sooner rather than later.

Get a grip David, I said no such thing, I said I don’t trust tweets as anyone with a keyboard can put them up. Some do make the news others turn out to be BS. The story has only hit the press in the last few hours.

Most papers are going with the line "I almost scratched Black Caviar" which of course the man he never actually said.

Those who are insinuating he lied about being concerned obviously paid no attention to what Ryan Moore had to say in the press the next day "

I didn’t have a ride in the race but I went out to see her in the paddock, and I couldn’t believe how poor she looked. She was hairy and didn’t look to have a lot of core strength about her. She looked like a mare who had had a hard life and needed a rest.

Right after the race I said

"I’m just listening to Steve Drowne who had a look at her in the paddock and said if it wasn’t for who she was he would have told anyone who asked not to touch her.

He went on to say she was long in her coat which tends to sap energy and overall she simply did not look in the condition you would expect in a horse trained to the minute.

It seems to me some people chose to ignore the obvious and take pleasure out of insinuating others are liars.

Peter Moody is either as blind as a bat and thought she looked fantastic or he was concerned and is telling it the way it was.

I prefer to believe the latter.

That’s very interesting Hurdyman. What I find even more interesting is that Peter Moody still ran her. I don’t think Sir Henry Cecil would have done the same, even after travelling around the globe. It seems to me, Peter Moody is perhaps a little bit of an irresponsible trainer if the above observations are true.

Obviously if they are true then he would have noticed, so with that taken into account, he took a very big risk with a reputation that could not afford to be lost and just came out by the skin of his teeth. Not very professional decision.

Book makers put the absolute minimum back into racing so in this sense good riddance, a re introduction of a tote system, so that the money is going back into racing is in order. This would certainly help the prize money issue to be resolved. Exchanges should be charged for every book they host, other wise there is the minimal amount of finance returned to the sport. Once this is in place, a campaign to make FOBT illegal should be put in place as these machines only fuel an ever increasing addiction to gambling, cost the state in the long run.

The bookies fade away, a tote system installed, prize money solved, still leaves one problem. Bookmaker outlets work as a great recruitment agency for new followers of the sport. With out the bold corporations plastered on every high street in every town and city in the country, who will ever hear about racing?

One solution to this problem is to make the coverage free to all in their home. This would be possible with the racing channel and tote acting as one company. Full coverage of every race in the UK available to any one for free will definitely increase popularity and revenue on a major scale.

A way of ensuring that the all the money bet on racing goes through the tote is to make it illegal to run a book on a race with out a additional permit bought from the race course/ Racing channel/ the new tote. As these bookmakers choose not to help the funding of the sport why should they be allowed to profit?

On course bookmakers could continue to work in exactly the same way that they are today, renting pitches and setting their own prices. With the exchanges being charged a good chunk of their profits, this would help drive down the exchange price and restore an equilibrium with in the betting market.

A booming business and self sustained economy with in its own right, racing will cost the bookmakers a % of their income forcing them to offer shorter and shorter prices on other sports, hopefully encouraging more punters to turn to racing."

I believe the current law UK racing uses is the best option. What we must all remember is that any rule or law in any walk of life will never suit everybody or party 100 % of the time.

Hypothetically if the law was changed to accommodate the most recent situation then in the future the new law will also face a situation where it does not totally suit all parties all of the time. Thus we arrive back in the same situation under a new rule.

It is my opinion that the law we have suits the majority of incidents most of the time. Therefore should remain unchanged. As there are no absolutes in racing there cannot be an absolute law, there are too many variables.

I think Matt Chapman should host the game show that is on when the racing is ended. With the third rate glamor models covered in glitter. He even has the tan. The show should
    be called "Lump it on".

I would hate to see him on any thing racing related, i have had enough of him, he is a loud and annoying presenter, who uses over excitement and hype as a poor substitute for lack of sound racing knowledge. I don’t think you’ll find him on time-form radio any time soon.

    Dear Mr M Chapman,

    Please stop.

:( I wrote such a fine answer and lost it into the blue. Wellll , again, and shorter this time:
After that I got new glasses, specially made for working by a screen, I can watch race replays in longer intervals that before. The eyes relaxes more ,and my brain does not want to send me to sleep after 10 minutes.

Man are not meant to study running horses on a tiny screen. Your eyes needs some help.

Are you serious? Please tell more. cheers

Nice winner Ginger, thanks for the heads up. Opera Gal went like this " Drawn closest to rail, broke OK, early run style, leading just off inside rail, uncontested, challenged 3 out, won easy when moderately ridden , finished relatively springy in gallop out, benefited from pace and position"

This regime is rubbish and quite unhealthy.

I would recommend starting your studying day with a Full English breakfast (plenty of fried Sunblest), a cup of tea and a Woody.

Gradually increase your cigarette intake throughout the day and for God’s sake ditch the exercise.

As the form analysis becomes more intense, move onto recreational amphetamines. This will help you to study quicker and have the added benefit of you not giving a sh*t when you lose.

Please remember to consult your doctor prior to commencing any new lifestyle regime.

    Hope this helps,

    Mike

Yes Mike, so when I ultimately fail miserably or as we say "well and truly Ladbroked", the realization of a gambling addiction will be some what be diluted with the now apparent additional addition to narcotics.
