No chance. The producers wouldn’t entertain the idea for even a moment, and neither would Clare Balding. She wouldn’t get a word in edgewise if Matt Chapman was part of the Ch4 team.

The ego jousting would be just too much to bear.

Sean Boyce, although knowledgeable, has too many splinters in his backside: like Francome, he doesn’t like to criticise those directly involved in the sport.

Chapman is the second most annoying racing presenter currently working, after "Big Mac" of course. All the fake banter and his inept attempts to highlight what he thinks are riding mistakes or bad rides are irritating in the extreme. I will not say any more for fear of accusations of getting jiggy. Yeehaa.

He’s a seriously good broadcaster. Not many are as equally comfortable or competent doing the serious stuff with a Henry Cecil type or just shooting the breeze with some phone-in mug who’s done his brains following the Nicholl’s column.

No loss as a commentator, way too self indulgent, but in every other respect Thommo’s natural successor imo.

I’ve always thought he was more Charlie Cairoli’s natural successor myself.

    Chappers the new Derek Thompson?

    Am I getting confused here:-

    Matt (Different Gravy) Chapman

    Derek (Calm down Ash) Thompson

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

What an amazing comparison to make. Charlie Cairoli was loved by millions of people for the way he made them laugh. Matt Chapman couldn’t raise a laugh if he tried. All his efforts go out the window as soon as he opens his flaptrap.

The last time I saw Matt Chapman on At The Races, he seemed to be doing much of his presenting in a comparatively straight way and without being unnecessarily bombastic.
He certainly seemed to keeping the fake vocal gymnastics to a minimum, by his standards, and it made a big difference. I didn’t have any problem watching him.
He does have a very good knowledge of the sport, enthusiasm and a way of charming some otherwise reticent trainers.
He was moderating his antics in his racecourse commentaries after a while but it seemed as though it was too late to make a difference in whether to keep him on. It was good at the time to see him taken down a peg or two.
Perhaps he learned a little about himself in terms of self-knowledge and realised that you can’t always carry on overdoing it with impunity in the face of almost universal criticism from viewers.
He would obviously be wrong for Channel 4 because he would be a loose cannon now that the coverage is expected to be heading in a more professional and businesslike direction under Clare Balding. Tomfoolery, larking about and over-the-top clowning are not likely to be part of the Balding blueprint.

If that’s the case that would suggest RIP Thommo. I know this has been discussed to death, but when C4 show the lesser meetings having Thommo as the host makes it more enjoyable, in my opinion anyway

Certainly is better when Tommo hosts the secondary meeting and also does so on the Morning Line, apart from when he insists on doing the thumbs-up to the camera when he is introduced.
I’m expecting Tommo to get the heave-ho from Channel 4, I must confess, although it wouldn’t surprise me if he doesn’t bow out gracefully himself.
He has been on toe-curlingly good form at York this week, achieving a high score on the cringeometer, not least when interviewing the woman who had made the vegetable horse being ridden by a vegetable Frankie Dettori. Tommo insisted on eating some of the Yorkshire pudding that had also been used, accompanied by predictable ridiculous facial expressions. But it was still good to see back doing what he does best.
Aidan O’Brien must have set a new post-war record for the number of times he said "listen" during a bizarre comedy interview with Tommo.
Tommo did, however, strike the right balance when interviewing a frighteningly gaunt Sir Henry Cecil the same day.
To lower the tone further, Emma Spencer certainly made an impression in her tight one-piece lemon yellow dress.

I think Matt Chapman should host the game show that is on when the racing is ended. With the third rate glamor models covered in glitter. He even has the tan. The show should
    be called "Lump it on".

I would hate to see him on any thing racing related, i have had enough of him, he is a loud and annoying presenter, who uses over excitement and hype as a poor substitute for lack of sound racing knowledge. I don’t think you’ll find him on time-form radio any time soon.

    Dear Mr M Chapman,

    Please stop.

Only saw the first two races from Longchamp yesterday, but I thought Matt Chapman was superb in the paddock with his interviews. Intelligent questions and observations, that connections seemed to respond to. He doesn’t get fazed in the presence of the upper echelons of racing’s hierarchy, and his trademark humour works well in those surroundings.

If there was ever a better audition for a similar post on the new C4 coverage I’ve yet to see it.

Agreed, Chappers did a cracking job yesterday, he knows his stuff and when he drops the tomfoolery comes across as good humoured and knowledgeable.

In fact I thought he made the ATR coverage bearable, despite them having to fit in Uttoxeter and Tipperary.

Nail on head – he can be an excellent interviewer, especially when he plays it "straighter".

I’ve mentioned before he does the CCTV presentation at Towcester. Last year he tried to play it too much for laughs and the tomfoolery, as Aji calls it, was very much to the fore and frankly it was at times embarrassing and counter productive.

This year he has been more "restrained", yes his personality still comes through but it has been much more measured, as a result the whole thing has been much better.

Trainers and jockeys have been far more willing to chat to him and, I have to say, he has managed some excellent and insightful paddock interviews with connections and some have been far franker than I would have expected about the chances of their runners.

Interestingly some of my press room colleagues have been quick to moan about Towcester TV but I notice many of them now use Chappers interviews as information sources.

Chapman is superb at his job and doesn’t suffer from a sore Arse as so many other presenters who prefer to sit on the fence.

Chapman should be chained to the ATR studio…the thoughts of both him and Lesley Graham ….should probably put me off watching CH4

I cannot stand him , thankfully dont have to suffer him , but do occasionally watch Ch 4 , that would be never with his presence added

    Leave bad enough alone please

JUST NO ….go back to commentating on Lingfield for the dirty channel

    imo
