Lol Judge. Will try to do better folks, it’s been tricky the last few days. Perhaps you have a good idea there Nathan in backing them all E/W.

I think you must have misread Golden Minstrel! There’s also a Flight, Rapper, Whin, Kite, Freeze, Fox, Surprise and Trix, but no Miller.
Incidentally, There have been plenty of horses beginning with colours, eg Red Rum, Black Aplachi, practically every colour except White. I can’t find any horse that’s run in the National beginning with that colour and I’ve gone back to 1884 so far. No yellows either, but horses aren’t usually yellow, seems a bit strange White isn’t used more. Come to think of it, don’t know any fmous horse with that prefix
You won’t find any pre-1884 but: White Cockade 1921, White Surrey 1921/25/26, White Park 1927…
December 30, 2016 at 13:50 in reply to: Answer this horse racing question then ask the next #1279270Afraid not Silk. Norah Wilmot, like Auriol Sinclair, Florence Nagle & Louie Dingwall, never had a runner in the National. Also ruled out is Rosemary Lockhart-Smith who trained Steel Bridge to be 2nd in 1969 because although she was entitled to apply for a licence she did not, preferring to carry on under her husband’s.
Careful reading of my comments will narrow down the span of years and another vague clue is: Shakespeare!

December 29, 2016 at 00:16 in reply to: Answer this horse racing question then ask the next #1279037Yes, first runner Silk. Nevertheless a good try as Jenny’s initial entrant was in 1977 but the very first officially trained by a woman was earlier.
It’s interesting how various ratings services differ, and I suspect they always have over the years. I respect that a number of people swear by Timeform but they have never been for me. In this instance they appear to have copped out in a flurry of plusses & question marks!
Horse…TFM….RP…..Me
Thi…..167+…178….176
CC……164?…166….169
SC……164?…166….168
TFT…..164?…165….168
JH……160….163….164I stick by my ratings. What is of more interest is what figure Thistlecrack could run to if pressed, say in the GC. Based on 178 for an easy World Hurdle win I think he could do 183 over Hurdles and a standard improvement from Hurdles to Chases is 10 so I would still predict 193. He still has to prove it and it is no small task, however, Monday removed a lot of the doubt. He deserves to be given the benefit of any remaining but if you think Monday was impressive imagine the reaction if this horse is, for once, ridden out and wins the GC by 10+ lengths!

Back to more familiar territory.
Who was the first woman to officially (women were first permitted to hold a licence in their own name in 1966) train a runner in the Grand National?
December 28, 2016 at 08:01 in reply to: Answer this horse racing question then ask the next #1278873Hi, in Santa Claus’s 1964 Derby the fourth place horse Anselmo was owned by Billy Fury!
Well done with Native River Ginger.
yep i had both games also GM they’re off is that the one which was races on a record and came up with different results? i had that as well but couldn’t remember the name
Love the red ones in totopoly,my fav i think,if the old brain is working correctly was no5 maraduke jinks
Yep, nwalton, They’re Off was the record one. I never found it as much fun as the others. Even the Weetabix Crazy Horse Racing Game thrilled me more!
Not sure of the Totopoly numbers, only know all the horses were the Lincoln winners 1926-37.

Halved in price,
You be getting banned at this rate GM,
whether you looked for value or not, you certainly have found it in the last two races, I’m off to green up….
Lol, Nathan, I assure you I’m not looking for value…I just can’t help it :)
Am still cursing the first at Kempton, Mohayeed (backed at 14/1 best odds) went off 28/1 beaten 1 3/4, the pair well clear, by a horse I had fourth in – can only win 35% of the time with these 10/1+ I suppose :) :) :)
