Having watched the Ascot Stakes thrice, I’ve come to the conclusion that Tiger Cliff will take all the beating in the Cesarewitch. He has proven that he stays, going on well at the end of his race; the probable easier ground at HQ in October will be in his favour; and even Queally will have a job encountering traffic problems on the vast expanse of the Rowley Mile.

It’d also be nice to see Lady Cecil land a prize which always eluded her late husband. I remember Henry fielding two leading fancies, favourite Military Band and second- or third-favourite Tomaschek, in 1981 but neither was quite good enough on the day, with the favourite finishing an honourable third to Peter Walwyn’s Halsbury.
