I wouldn’t say there are any doubters to her record and ability in Aussie sprints. I think she will be statistically the best ever.
Just has the same doubters that Frankel got for example in the US re campaigns – i.e. why didn’t he go to Breeders Cup/Arc/DWC etc?
although to BC owners credit she came to England which took guts. The latter is also another reason why i think some people don’t get too excited over here – it wasn’t exactly a blistering win like Frankels 4 days earlier, especially given the build up.

I think if she had gone for the July Cup and walked it then there would be more acknowledgement in the UK.

Its all opinion in the end though – what is pointless is a frankel v BC debate. Both outstanding in their own fields.

This is an interesting read. In my opinion a key factor is the knowledge of the animal – for example, how Cecil got frankel to settle was due to his ability to read the animal/ and instruct TQ. However, the question could be asked-is it just as good a piece of skill for say Christine Dunnett to get the best out of Danzoe/Speedyfix than Cecil’s getting Frankel to win? CD has a different yard to Cecil’s but has produced winners from it. Okay not the same amount by any stretch of the imagination, but still has got winners from the resources available.

I think a lot of it comes down to the money that can be made from getting people in to ‘have a good time’.
The busiest I have seen Great Yarmouth was for one of their Fake That nights. Newmarket Nights seem to be packed too as it offers something to a different audience. In comparison, apart from the odd opportunistic group of lads, the later meetings at Newmarket Rowley Mile seem to be a lot more calmer and aimed at racing fans.

I would also argue that, Aintree Festival aside, jumps racing is less orientated towards stag/hen parties and populated more by the enthusiast (although hard to believe walking around cheltenham!).

Royal Ascot is day dependent – I do think on the Thursday, fri, sat some people don’t even know the races are on!

Having said all that, after going to Great Leigh’s in the winter on a cold weekday when there were more bookies than punters I guess the weather/time of year may have a huge impact on the type of race goers?!

    Just my thoughts.

Its all down to opinions I guess which was the purpose of my post (apologies – I do waffle at times!). I wouldn’t consider any opinion dumb, just different.
I personally don’t get the same wow factor with BC that I have done with other horses, I think that is what I wanted to say. But its opinion/gut feeling/(stupidity? Ha ha) the statistics don’t lie though – amazing record. My european comment was unfair and only really based on the ascot run/gut feeling. July cup 2013 please… :)

Sadly I think it is those 4 factors above anything else. However, I do think a key quality for any trainer is to know the animal and the sport like the back of their hand.
I guess the only way of answering (to some extent) is to think of trainers who have fallen out with rich owners and lost their big stars – have they managed to keep producing the winners?

If say the next 3 grand nationals are like this years with little incident is there a chance the general public will see it as the bland national and stop tuning in? After all there must be a reason why so many watch it compared to the derby

The Derby (or any group 1 for both jumps/flat) point is really interesting. I personally don’t find the GN that gripping from a racing side of things, especially compared to both gold cups, king George’s or the Derby/oaks/guineas etc. However, there is something that catches the publics imagination with the GN, something that makes thousands of people put on their only bet of the year. I believe it is the position the race holds in the publics imagination/national psyche, and sadly that is most likely linked in with the considered toughness of the race.

Sadly the BBC has sport well down its list of priorities these days – even the F1 has gone to sky now. I can’t remember the last programme I watched on the Beeb!

Re the Black Caviar / opponents debate, I guess the same was probably said about Frankel especially when facing only 3 others at Goodwood?
For me though, the Monterosso argument puts forward the case for not using prize money won to gauge the standard of a race. However, I guess it comes down to what you want to argue. For me BC just doesn’t do it, and IMO would be shown up If spending a full season in Europe, however I guess some US fans would of thought the same re frankel etc. the beauty of opinion.
