Probably hearing that Door Latch and Vodkatini had both died in the same Point-to-point. There just felt something really unnecessary about that, especially given the careers both had had.

I’ve a feeling I might have seen the P-t-P where Ski managed that one number in her figures. Her fourth place was notable due to the comment in the racecard "Always gets behind, never finishes".

There were more than 4 runners but not so sure if there were more than 4 finishers

Poor Mel should not have died like that, the race is terrible. Followers of NH racing have to accept in their minds there is an element of risk, just as in other equine sports, but hope that it is minimised as far as possible. The national fences I think unneccessarily increase the risk for the sake of spectacle, and that race in particular has amateur riders in a short, therefore fast, race

Again, not the thread for this but I wholeheartedly agree. As well as Mel there was a horrendous X-rated fall at the chair. How that horse got up and ran off I will never know.

This is a horrible race, with too many riders who are simply not good enough and being only a circuit – too fast.

But back to the matter in hand. Tragic news about Exotic Dancer, so gallant so many times. RIP

I’ve quite a collection of the non-betting variety of racing books but two of the best are

Ginger McCain – From Red to Amber
Jane Schwartz – Ruffian Burning from the Start.

Even knowing the story of the latter it was still a tears job.

Latest Tim Moore is Nul Points (which I’ve got but not read yet). Never Let Me Go is Kazuo Ishiguro

It didn’t come out very well  should have previewed it first. And replied a bit sooner…

Pensioners dithering in supermarkets at the weekend.

GO IN THE WEEK, you’ve got loads of time then. Stay out of my way on a Saturday morning.

Brings back memories for me of Wing and a Prayer.  Not sure he’d have been a superstar but won a lot of races as a juvenile hurdler.  Beautiful looking horse as well, I think he might have been an entire.  Only had one race in his next season which he admittedly only won because a certain Desert Orchid fell at the last (if my memory serves me right) and was found dead in his box the next morning.Do agree that Jair du Cochet was lost too soon.  Saw him race a few times and he was an amazing athlete of a horse.

Lucky thing, I have to buy my own

As to what to expect, lots of people and ladies in little summer dresses shivering in the hailstones. Tho’ 2007 was an exception….

Serious answer is depends slightly on the tickets. Tatts tickets you can either see the horses in the paddock or find a spot to see (bits of) the race. Seats you can do both (even the West Tip seats which are a fair walk from the paddock, although I only bothered with them for the National it) – although the viewing isn’t brilliant from anywhere low down at Aintree. Never had roof tickets so can’t comment on them.

We use the park and ride at Kirkby which works OK – although we got away right at the front of the melee and then ran for it this year after they closed the course crossing. Trains are usually pretty good as well.

Get there early to walk the course, you can do all but the last 4 fences. You can’t get to the fences any more but we pose by Bechers for a photo every year. I have stayed late in the past and walked the course again after racing. Stood on Bechers and jumped off – it’s a long way down :)

Well we’ll never know will we? But they were also a mile clear of the rest at the time – if I remember right. There’ve been a fair few "non-stayers" win the Gold Cup. (Desert Orchid, Kauto Star to name but two and yes, I know they weren’t considered non-stayers at the time they won their Gold Cups but they certainly were earlier in their careers). It just depends and Nick Dundee didn’t look at the end of his tether.

Mind you, having just watched LLT’s Gold Cup on Arazi’s You Tube video he wasn’t going best at the third last there either

Still maintain he’d beat Kauto and especially Best Mate though. He was powering away at the end of that race* and pricked his ears before the line. I wouldn’t say that was his best racecourse performance either.

*suppose you’ll also point out that he was powering away from the likes of Strong Promise and Florida Pearl, neither of whom did see out the trip. But See More Business was in there as well.

Hi – new on here but had to stick my oar in where two of my all time favourites are being mentioned.

Glad someone brought Nick Dundee into this :) without a doubt the best I’ve seen (not old enough for Arkle…). Any horse that can be cantering all over Looks Like Trouble must have been something awesome.

Hm…a rational stab at this. Not sure I can do it, too much heart over head going on as I spend half the Lambourn Open Day standing with LLT sneaking him polos and telling people what they’re looking at (surprising how many don’t know :( )

    Oh well….

    1. Nick Dundee
    2. LLT
    3. Kauto
    4. Best Mate
