I’m not sure if I’m looking forward to the race or dreading it. Either way I’m a tad nervous.

Me Too – I’m driving up to Haydock from Surrey cos if its Kauto’s last race I want to be there, I’m just praying if it is, it will be cos he’s does well and retires on a high.
All that matters really is that he gets round safely, it would be wonderful if he did win but as long as he goes home with everything intact and is happy, thats what matters.
    Love Ya Kauto!

What a meeting for the Stewarts – sucb triumph with Big Bucks on Thursday then this tragedy with Ornais Saturday. So sad.
I originally thought all the fallers had got up, it wasnt til they were sent round the fence and the green cover evidence, then to witness the screens round the other poor horse from the overhead camera – remember there was debate about its use last year – my heart sunk.
Surely the problem with the national is the number of horses that take part, if the field was half the size it would not as dangerous, if one falls 9 times of of 10 it will take another with it. As one jockey said (cant remember who) his horse jumped perfect but came over the fence to crash into two fallers and stood no chance of avoiding them so came down too. 40 horses all trying to get over a huge obstacle at the same time can surely only lead to tragedy.

None of which will help Ornais or Dooneys Gate – RIP you beautiful boys.

Yeah lets all slag Denman off AGAIN – funny how after Cheltenham everybody loved him, now hes the pits again. How fickle we are! Nacarat deserved to win, he ran a brilliant race and proved his doubters wrong, and Baby Run was amazing too. Today wasnt Denmans day, but there will be other days – and he will make them his, just like hes done many times before.

Poor Inventor – I too thought great, hes up then realised he couldnt walk and will never forget the way he watched the other horses running off and wasnt able to go with them. Heartbreaking.
up til then i was watching the race and thinking what a good day it has been with no fatalities – shame it didnt end that way. RIP you poor beautiful horse

Thought he was OK at first as it looked like he’d got up but then no sign of him running on. I loved this horse, he looked so much like Kauto and was so promising. Another sad loss, but thanks at least to CH4 for telling us what had happened.
    RIP Coty. :(

I was originally going to Newbury yesterday but decided not to at the last minute and am so glad I didnt – I dont think I could bear to ever go racing again if I witnessed that horrific incident. Perhaps one of the saddest things was the way several punters were laughing and waving at the camera when CH4 was showing them leaving – how sick can people get, no compassion for the horses whatsoever – shame it wasnt them that got electrocuted.
As for the trainers that wanted the meeting rescheduled to tomorrow, they must be mad or greedy or both, the course needs to be kept closed until its certain what happened and why, and if the horses need a run they’ll have to go elsewhere, no way should it be reopened until there is absolutely zero chance of such a terrible thing happening again. It does seem from todays reports that it was the aeration (?) of the ground that damaged the cable, and if that is the case why wasnt the cable reinforced if it was likely to be able to be pierced?
Whatever, all the discussion wont bring those poor horses back and what about the others who were affected, they will be traumatised and probably terrified to go back into a parade ring.
Then to discover on here that there were also deaths at Leopardstown – yesterday must surely go down as one of the darkest days for horseracing.

In tears over this poor horse – saw this awful fall and couldnt believe it, how can that happen in a field of 3?
poor Oddshoes, such a pretty horse, surely something couldve been done to save him? Or was it just a case of being too expensive to fix? RIP dear Oddshoes, you didnt deserve this. :(

What a day yesterday – joy for Kauto, such bad luck for Ruby.
The King George wont happen without Ruby on board, he & Kauto are a team. Ive been looking forward to it since last Boxing Day, but maybe now Clive Smith should just retire him? His achievements will never be forgotten and it would be so sad if he lost the King George and without Ruby, sadly, I think he might.
I speak as one of Kautos biggest fans and would be bitterly disappointed not to see him run again, but his welfare is the most important thing, after Cheltenham his luck mustve surely run out if god forbid he fell again.
Undoubtedly AP would be brilliant but I just feel without Ruby Kauto wont be the same and I am worried for him.
If he does race, I pray I am wrong and will be there cheering him on and willing him home safe.

:( Watched the race on CH4 – Tommo said he was worried about her but never said what the outcome was. Didnt see what happened, just that she was pulled up abruptly.
    What a shame, RIP Finoon.

Didnt see any coverage on Friday and am so so sad to hear this news. He was a real character, the question often being not would he win but would he even decide to run!
I was lucky enough to see him several times – not only a loss to the trainer, but a sad loss to racing.
Bless your heart and RIP Kennell Hill.

I love NH racing but I hate Aintree – National, Mildmay, Hurdle and bumpers. I spend the National looking at the fallers hoping that they get up ok. It was so strange watching today, as soon as they went down I knew both were gone and the high camera seemed to make it worse. Sadly over the years I’ve seen many horses, and even worse two jockeys, killed at meetings I’ve attended but that image will live with me forever. The only one I can remember as horrific was Mr Brooks in the Breeders Cup.

Does anyone know how the grey that was pulled up in the bumper was? The Post only mentions that she was pulled up but after Pagan Starprincess I wouldn’t have too much faith in their reporting. She looked to be injured but it is hard to tell as she was out the back and only in the picture for a fleeting moment.

I totally agree rich_ie, I wish the Post would say whats happened and maybe even publish an "obitary" on horses that have been killed, Schindlers Hunt surely is deserving of some tribute. I hope this poor grey you mention wasnt the 5th casualty I asked about in my previous post?
Lydia said at the end of the programme yesterday "you have to examine your own conscience if horses die as its part of racing" but if jockeys deaths became as routine as horses things would be very different.

After such a terrible day Friday losing Shindlers Hunt – I cant believe he’s gone – and those two other poor horses, as well as PaganSP on Thursday, I wasn’t going to watch the National yesterday. Now I am glad I did as it is wonderful to know they all came home safe, it must be the first time in years thats happened? RUK said there had been 5 equine deaths over the 3 days, if so who was the other one; I just hope Nick Luck got it wrong and it

    was

actually 4 – though thats 4 too many. RIP you poor beautiful creatures.

RIP Law and Order – broke fetlock at Plumpton yesterday, just 4 years old. Was probably destined for obscurity, had failed to complete in the 3 previous outings and mediocre placings on the flat. But someone should still shed a tear for him…..

Yes,I will too. Poor horse, so young, what a shame.

It was mentioned. You did miss it. Presumably they told us as soon s it was confirmed and there was an appropriate break in the commentary.

I watched the whole sad episode and indeed I only heard that Ruby was up and OK – I dont recall hearing anything said about the horse. There was so much joy over Weapons Amnesty winning that the fact a horse had taken a fatal fall during the race didnt matter at all. When a horse falls I look for them to be getting up, not the jockey – humans dont get shot for breaking a leg. It was obvious this poor animal died as he hit the ground and nothing could have been done for him.
I said yesterday I doubted that Casey Jones would be the only horse to die at Cheltenham this week, I am so so sorry I was right.
    RIP Citizen Vic.

Terrible thing to happen, poor little horse, wrong place at the wrong time. I hate to say it, but I doubt he will be the only one to lose his life at the Festival – I pray I am wrong.

Such a shame – he was (in hindsight) obviously feeling something as he was struggling from very early on in the race and hardly going at all as he was tailing off up the straight. RIP.

Why wasnt he pulled up straight away? Especially bad news to me as from what I saw (on TV) Saturday seemed to have been a good day with no horses hurt for once. So sad to learn this wasnt the case after all.

Oh No not another one. When/where did this happen – everything Ive watched the past few days seemed to be OK, lots of URs but no falls.
