Great race – I wonder how many people’s fledgling interest in the sport was ignited that day. Mine certainly.
A really interesting point – if the race was run now, many of us would say how great we thought it was, but would add the proviso that the sight of a stricken Grey Sombrero would potentially put a newcomer to the sport off for life. We always try (for good reason) to speak for newcomers/outsiders, yet we seem to misread how such people will view events. That was also one of the first races I saw (in replay – it was the 1977 race which I watched live and which enthralled me) which cemented my love of the sport. The 1977 race saw two good horses (Winter Rain and Zetas Son) killed as well, and yet I haven’t met anyone who was soured by such an initial experience.
The 77 National was my fourth live Race so to speak but the first that i understood the order of the fences.
I can remember Winter Rain falling and the camera angle too didnt help its the most sickening fall i`ve seen at aintree and i still feel dread when i watch the replays even now as they approach Bechers.February 13, 2011 at 00:56 in reply to: Newbury- two horse fatalities, electrical problem in paddock #340377Ghost, I think he is loving the attention. Probably the first time the sad little man has had any.
We should play a guessing game & guess Joncol marital status and job.
I’m going for single & traffic warden.
I think nail and head
February 12, 2011 at 23:17 in reply to: Newbury- two horse fatalities, electrical problem in paddock #340327Joncol you are clearly a plant for the anti`s either that or you are simple.
Todays event were unforseen and as has been mentioned before i`m sure the first race was run in a state of confusion and shock.
Why are you so quick to lay blame on everyone and everything ?These were extraordinary circumstances and your anti racing stance brings nothing to this forum or racing .
There is not one sane person who follows jump racing who will not see this as one of the darkest days and i include those involved with Newbury in this.
You need to shut up .
Thought Calgary ran a nice race today so hope he is entered.
Looks a bit ungainly at a moderate pace but jumps really well at speed reminds me of a Party Politics type not quite top class but a nice big sort.Although I can understand Midnight Court’s connections missing this. Lose in this and the Gold Cup dream is over – dont run in this and the dream
Nice to see midnight court is still going strong after all these years .
I’m backing Calgary Bay. I said last October I thought he should be aimed at the national, and now they’ve said they plan too, that’s where my moneys going.
I`m with you if thats the case ,straight to the top of my shortlist always fancied him as a national type.
Would be rude of me not to respond.
Neither horse you mention ran solely over hurdles before running in the National. Bobbyjo ran in only one hurdle race and 4 chases and Numbersixvalverde ran in 3 chases and only one hurdle race that season.
Anyway ou are missing the point totally.
It wasn’t running over hurdles that beat Bobbyjo. He carried 10 stone when he won the National and got lumped up with 11st6bs on his second attempt.
Numbersixvalverde also carried a low weight when he won and although he carried only 9lbs more 11st3lbs he had gone into that dreaded over 11 stone zone. It would also be safe to say he was probably past his best in what proved to be his last race.
Don’t Push It already carried 11st5lbs and won with ease I doubt if 5lbs will stop him and if by any chance Denman were to run he’d probably carry less than he did last year. I’ve already taken 30 28 26 and 25 on the machine for a right few quid and can’t for the hell of me undertand why he’s so big.
Jonjo now has Synchronised to fit into plans but albeit barely unnoticeable because the others were going so slow he hit another flat spot yesterday. Faster ground and a much faster pace at Aintree certainly won’t suit him but if it were to come up soft Jonjo has both covered.
Another horse I’ve been dabbling in from as high as 100 (would be something if I could outdo the 60 I got on DPI last season) is Imoncloudnine.
I backed him in the Welsh National and was very pleased with the way he ran. Neil Mulholland must be thinking he has a great chance if the ground comes up good in April. He’d be a stone better horse on good ground and already shown he can jump round Aintree. He UR Dougie Costello at the Canal Turn but it was more like something out of a Laurel and Hardy movie than a bad mistake. Dougie was very unfortunate as the horse went left after the others and his moentum tipped him over the horses right shoulder.
He should get in with a fairly low weight as he was well beaten by Jonjo’s yesterday. He can lie up with the pace which is a plus and stays forever. I fancy him big time but Don’t Push It has to be my main choice having done it before.
In the season following their national wins Bobbyjo ran in three hurdles and no chases and if you watch the 2000 national back looks like a horse out of practice.
Numbersixvalverse ran in 2 hurdles 1 chase.Agree about Imncloudnine he was enjoying it in the Becher and his run in the welsh makes him the sort of toughnut that does well in the GN
I told you last year no one listened so ffs pay attention
Forget Synchronised, Don’t Push It will win again.
Only so much they can give him too carry and it’s certainly not enough to stop him repeating last years easy win.
Enjot youre debate but that’s it for me and the Grand national.
Don`t Push It will be put at a disadvantage if campaigned solely over hurdles ,didn`t work for Bobbyjo or Numbersixvalverdi.
I`m not sure Synchronized is the ideal type for Aintree ,jumps flat at some of his fences he is turning into a class act though in staying chases .
I think the mention of Khachaturian is interesting i`ve long felt there was a big run in this horse and i`ve been following him since he fell at the first in the Triumph taking my money with him.I like the look of Ballyvesey thought he was given a nice show of the fences in the Becher .
Also would like to see Oh Crick given an entry jumps really well and looks as though he would stay given the chance .Bookies must love you.
Let’s forget about the 28 teenagers who have tried to win the national since 1989 and failed.
The statistics say horses aged 8 to 12, but why?
This is just my theory on why and the be lot’s of people who will argue the toss. This forum is full of them.
7 year olds lack the experience and 13 + lack the speed. As you get older you’ve not as fast or nimble as you used to be, horses as well. If this trend is broken I think it’ll be by a 7 year old who matured quickly.
I think its also because 8 to 12 year olds are also more battle hardened .
If you look at most National winners and placed horses they are used to the hustle and bustle of big fields in races run at a proper pace.
Unfortunately though most 13+ year olds have run with credit in the race anno domini has caught up with them .I remember one chaser decades ago, who actually ran better as a fourteen-year old than at any time in his career; winning several fair handicaps races, if I remember corectly. Can’t remember his name, unfortunately.
I think you may mean Mac Vidi trained and owned by Pam Neal he had an extraordinary season in 79/80 even finishing up placed in the Gold cup .
I believe he died soon after its as though he was on a final flingThey should have gotten the hint that they should stay away from Aintree after the chaos caused by Popham Down
Jeez Dad you and your Owen & Fullagar horses. You may aswell get shares in them.
Notre Pere is certain to have my support on Sunday, but there are a few runners i’m really interested in; Maljimar, Hello Bud and even The Last Derby. I’ve been rather interested in him ever since he won that 3 miler last year, i think it was the United House Gold Cup. There’s no reason why he should be without a chance, especially with that Cork National 3rd under his belt.
I don’t understand why Irish Raptor is as short as 12/1. Don’t get me wrong, i’m not looking for value as i simply do not believe he has it in him, but the horse has failed to complete the course on his last two runs over the big fences, in his last 2 runs which are just about the same distance as the Becher he has tired rapidly and finished miles behind them. On top of this he has only ever finished 6th in his two Becher completions. If he wins i’ll walk to Twisters and eat the horse’s turd.
Peter your making me out to be some sort of stalker
It was coincidence that i became a fan of Ballycassidy and Iron Man but i admit i look out for their colours now as they seem to buy good sorts.
Plus at risk of going on again compensation in the National one day would be good .So what are your final picks?
I quite like the look of Meanus Dandy in this. He looked an improved horse in the Badger Ales, & beat some decent horses fairly easily in the end I thought. His ratings rise still leaves him on a fair enough mark in this, Popham rides again & if he takes to the fences (jumped well at Wincanton) I think he will go very well.
Doubt very much he will be 9-1 at the weekend.
I presume the jockey is connected to Chris Popham in which case it would be ironic as CP hated Aintree which i suspect was further exaserbated by Roll-A-Joints mishap.
I`ll be having a small punt on Ballyvesey ,very young but i have had high hopes for this horse since i saw him plugging on at Chepstow last December .
I won`t be able to resist a bet on my old favourite Always Waining in the Sefton as well . A real Aintree lover but not a National horse i fear.
Rather interesting set of entries. Notre Pere looks like a strong contender. Though Maljimar takes my eye as a key fancy.
Disappointed at some of the absences though; Companero and Keenans Future at teast.
Peter let the Keenans future thing go

I`ve just gone back and read what he said at the time ,brings a tear to your eye an old hardened jock like that talking in such terms warms your heart.
